Tip 2 - Choose a Performance Oriented Theme

Hello and welcome to Day 2 in my WordPress optimisation series.

Another blindingly obvious tip again today. The first few tips are always the elephant in the room so to speak, thats why I think it's best we get them out of the way first of all.

Remember that these elephants represent the platforms on which we're building our business. We need to ensure that we're treating our businesses seriously and that means taking responsibility for the decisions that we're making, the education we're consuming and the actions that we're ultimately taking.

Lets consider a scenario..

If I was to walk you down to a new car dealer right this minute and give you £50,000 pounds to spend on a brand new car..

would you pick out a car that looks stunningly beautiful and that has heaps of clever gadgets but when you got in it to drive away it only goes 2 miles an hour!

I think not!

Well, simply put, most WordPress themes are built exactly the same way as that car. They look great, they have all the features that you can possibly imagine, but they suck the life out of and drag our website to a crawl.

They don't care at all about performance, only about how beautiful they look and the real bummer is that we might not even see or feel this issue at the beginning while configuring and setting up our sites.

There's an enormous difference between a theme that performs well and a theme that performs well under stress / load. Most themes which we'll come across out there are simply not designed to perform under the stress of hundreds or thousands of visitors.

To create a successful site, especially one which caters for resource hungry visitors consuming all our content we have to choose a theme that not only looks great, that not only has incredible features but also incorporates lightning-fast performance!

Keep this in mind as we further explore specific themes later in this series...I'll try and demonstrate the key components that make up a high performing speedy theme.

I hope you've found todays second post informative...I would love to hear your comments and feed back below.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow where we'll be looking into "updates" and how they effect site performance.

To our success!

Anthony

Is there any chance you can not let us wait tooooo long for that, PLEASE? ;-) LOL!

[hang head] Okay-okay, I KNOW patience is a virtue... I'm still working on that one! ;-) LOL!

Looking forward to seeing what you have up your sleeve!

Meanwhile, may you enjoy a lovely day, Anthony! ;-)

Hi Honor, I'll be going into a little extra detail in my future posts about which things to look for when considering a theme. The seed I want to plant for now is, that no two themes are the same...as they all have a unique footprint. Remember that a theme when stripped down to it's bare bones is just a software program made up of code. You want a theme that is light and not heavy and clumsy. Most sites that sell themes will provide info on such characteristics such as speed optimisation, responsiveness and SEO friendly. David58 has mentioned 2 companies below and there are many more theme shops trading on the web. If you stick with my posts, I'll provide some recommendations along with the test results to back them up. All the best, Anthony

Great, I look forward to this vital info

Thanks Mark that is great. I know when I am surfing if a sight takes to long to load I am off and looking into another one that will load faster.
Murray

Hi Murray, yes I'm exactly the same. In fact if a site doesn't load pretty much instantly I move on to next site and I'd rarely ever go back to it again. Thanks for your comments. Have a fantastic day.

Hopefully soon I will understand in detail but appreciate you sharing much for encouragement and knowledge as to how to proceed and see the need for speed indeed. Right on Anthony!

Hi John, yes indeed...speed is key. Have a great day

Interesting analogy that I can totally relate to between buying a car and choosing a Wordpress theme...so somewhere along the line a Wordpress theme has a list of specs, just as a vehicle does, and what we are going to look for are specs that enhance lighting-fast, high performance. That's great and I'm eager to learn about that !

Good evening Frank, hope you are doing well today. Yes, its my intention to delve deeper into the specific aspects/architecture of a theme which affects it speed to load within a browser. This will come later :) Thanks for your support and interest. Enjoy the rest of your day.
