Hi, yes plugins can slow your website down if you have more than 5.
Besides, you should be careful of which plugins you have and the ones you might be adding because if any of them clash against each other it will cause problems.
I've had experiences with both, having more than 5 and I had 2 similar ones I wasn't aware of which caused problems.
You are welcome, I see we aren't following each other so I just followed you. We can stay in touch this way.
Good luck :)
If it needs so many plugins then this is not a nicely designed theme. I would not consider it at all.

Will too many plugins slow down my website?

It's not necessarily the number of plugins that slow down your site. You can have 20 very lightweight plugins and still have a fast website OR 5 heavy plugins and a slow site...
There are lots of themes that recommend you to install additional plugins. Read each plugin description carefully to see if you really need that particular function. If you don't need it, don't install it :-)
When you do have installed the plugins you really need, try using P3 to see if there's any plugin that really slows down your website: WordPress Speed - P3 Performance Profiler
