Are you complying with the EU Cookie Law?

Google sent an email to some users of Adsense regarding the need to comply with the new EU Cookie Law with a deadline of September 30th 2015.

The links in this email are to: https://www.google.com/about/company/user-consent-...

and https://www.cookiechoices.org

If you have any concerns that big businesses may not be complying with this directive then take a look at cookiechoices.org (owned by Google) because they're using a banner there at the top of the page.

To make sure you don't lose your Adsense account and any upaid earnings please check out my training video at https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/eu-cookie...

I am glad I got mine done before the deadline would not want to get a slap from google lol

Ditto. I did mine as soon as I found out about it.

I think this is a serious issue. Although small websites are probably extremely unlikely to face legal action if they don't comply, it's well worth complying with anyway. If Google themselves think we should comply, we should comply. Google could actually decide to de-index all sites who don't comply. They could do this tomorrow. They could do it next week. They could do it next year. They may never do it. But why risk it? Google does do stuff like that, as recent history shows.

Back in 2012 I worked as an SEO person at an internet company. For a while, I was getting good rankings for our customers. Then Google did a major update to its algorithm and many of our customers lost their rankings. We lost customers. I lost my job.

Seriously, just install a little plugin, everyone. I mean, it's EU Law. Do you realise what that even means? And if you think that if you live in the USA that it doesn't matter, it does. If your websites are viewed by people in Europe then it matters.

It was only in April this year that the EU sued Google:
http://www.digitaltrends.com/android/the-european-commission-has-formally-accused-google-of-monopolistic-practices/

What if the EU decides to threaten to take down Google unless it stops showing websites that don't comply with the EU cookie law? If you think you can afford to suddenly lose all Google traffic to your website overnight, then you really aren't suited to running an online business.

I know that was a bit of an aggressive rant, but I'm just annoyed that I recently saw one member here dismiss this issue as if it doesn't matter.

Yes Marcus, it really does matter.

Thanks for the update Marion.

You're welcome.

What are your thoughts on why this law is only being legislated in Europe? I can only assume it will catch up to all of us eventually.

The legislation was passed in Europe but it applies to all apps and websites which appear to European citizens. I'm sure that eventually it will apply to viewers/readers all over the world. Either that or it will be part of people's education on using computers to understand that cookies will be used.

I am glad I asked. I thought I was exempt. So if I am in Canada or US or Australia, etc, with a .com domain, I would hope my site reached worldwide. Does that mean this law applies to me now?

Absolutely. Read what Marcus1978 just wrote in these comments.

Thank you for the heads up Marion . Always pays to stay informed .
