Which Is The Best? Main Menu's Linking To -

Hey Everyone

Hoping to pick at your brains a bit today :)

Kyle's Training in phase two recommends linking from each of your main menu's (Categories) to a page... This makes perfect sense to me from an SEO point of view and an intro to the category... However...

On inspecting a few of the more senior members niche blogs, I notice that a lot of them are linking from the main menu directly to the categories... This also make sense to me, but would this not be taking a shot in the dark as your latest post is shown first in the category, (this may not be as targeted as a dedicated page)...

So I am wondering,

Which do you prefer and why?

Has anyone tested both options out with respect to visitor time on site, bounce rates, conversions etc?

Looking forward to your awesome thoughts on this!

I am reading all your post, I hope I can get the answer.

hi Marc, haven't tested out both with regards to conversion etc. but if you can create a page which showcases the best of your post in that category, or populate the post nicely (say in a grid form with thumbnail image), I think me as a reader will be more engaged in the page version. Just my thinking.

Hey Rina. You are reading my mind at the moment. ;)

I am considering going from a short intro page to a review page that has the grid display as you mentioned.

ie. Home >> product type intro (Page) >> Product reviews 'grid & snippets'

v's

Home >> Category (blog roll)

I must say I do not understand what you write but would like to. I have already seen some claims about something similar and after asking hey why is this so I did not get any answer. You say that both ways make sense but why? Though I do not follow what these two are.

Linking is important as long as it makes sense and suits the text of a page or post. I do not see what makes the difference in which direction your link goes, from page to post or vice versa, to new post or to old post. It is supposed a) to provide info and b) to transfer authority. The latter implies that you can increase rank of a lower rated post/page. But it does not matter if this is a post or page, if it is new or old, if it is linked by another post or page, new or old. That is how I understand (and possibly misunderstand) linking.

Thank Jovo.

I was referring to linking to a page for that category v's link to the category 'blog roll' from the main menu... If that makes more sense ;)
