Hello, Ive made a new video training and the thumbnail is quite amusing :) and not the best though. Can we change the thumbnail or are we stuck with what is produced as it is

Hi guys, did someone get a solution to this? I have the same issue over here! Random thumbnail shows "site can't be reached"! Not sure anyone would click on a training like that.

WA doesn't use thumbnails, Marc. They just show an image from a few seconds into the video.

Thanks Marion!

Perhaps technically they don't use thumbnails, then.

But the image they show in this case is certainly more than a few seconds into the video! I don't know why they don't just use the start of the video...

Marc

Marion, I looked at this again. The very earliest this screenshot could have appeared is 3 MINUTES into the video.... why in the world would WA pick some random shot 3 minutes into the video???

Feigner is indicating that we can select the shot the appears, perhaps if we wait for the processing to complete before publishing it... do you know if that is true? cheers Marc

I always add an image but it doesn't really help. Here's one of mine.

I'm not sure what to see here Marion, I just see a blank video with a play button. But I think you've answered my question, there is nothing to help this.

thanks Marc.

That's the random frame that appears as the "thumbnail" for my video. No help to people who may be interested in the video.

ahhh! I get it! Yes, quite useless -- but maybe better than a funny face with wide open mouth and eyes closed!! LOL

unless someone else can find a way - i don't think you can change it after publishing.
i have had a quicl poke around and don't see anywhere to edit the training - except if someone requests an update- then maybe you can edit it.
phil
i know the feeling - i forgot to add thumbnails and the image is not the most flattering, but the training s there.

yeah, thank you for taking the time for a poke around -- I did the same and was hoping I missed something.

But are you saying that before publishing I can choose a thumbnail?

I could always delete it and republish it if I have a choice of thumbnails I suppose.

Otherwise, people will just have to look at me with my eyes squinting closed and my mouth open! LOL

I appreciate the time! Marc

i think in the last bit before publishing you can upload a thumbnail - if you can't see it then pm marion black - she produces vids all the time or loes.
as i say i never remember till too late.
so it might be worth going through the motions slowly and getting to the last stage and saying no i don't agree to see if it refuses to create the training.
but i think it is when you add the text under the video you can also upload an image.

phil

Hi Phil, cool, I hope so, I asked her this.... I did rush the end bit and published before processing the video was done... then the WA algorithm picked some random shot over 3 minutes into the video....I'd like some control over that I suppose... cheers and thanks again Marc

Do you ,mean in You Tube?

You can change it by clicking on it in the editor and selecting edit.

Hope this helps

Paul

Thanks Paul, no, I wish! This is a video I put up as a WA training. If it were on YouTUbe I could change the thumbnail.... !

Oh, cool.. sorry.. not sure on your issue...

Hope someone else can jump in

Paul

in making a WA blog I have indicated certain Headlines to appear at size H1, H2 or H3. This appears correct in my draft, but when I publish this, The headline sizes are removed

It’s a shame you never actually got an answer why h3 tags show up larger than H2 tags on the WA blog. I’ve been wondering this as well. I wonder if it’s a subtle hint to use H3 tags for WA blogs?

There may be a new update coming soon, however I am not a hundred percent certain.

Thank you both. I am sure there have been several updates since I asked this question, and in fact I don't think it has been addressed...so per Loes, only use H3! cheers Marc

Update: The following is for WP. I don't use any formatting on WA-Content and seldom in WA-blog due to needing to redo in WP or to wasting time caused by such problems.

I know this problem, Marc.
Not sure how it occurs but if I put the cursor at the end of the headline and hit return it will disappear.
Also if your headline spread over your paragraph above or below, use this:
Set your cursor in the upper paragraph at the end of the last sentence and hit return.
Then go to the end of the headline and hit the return button.
Press update.
This should cure your problem.

The next time the chosen headline should stay and also the paragraph.

Aloha, Jenna

Okay, interesting! I can say the easy way out was to only use the H3 style as suggested by Loes! :-)

Ok. Simple is always good, Marc!
After I found out the trick I use all sizes of a headline, and I also use a headline for its large font size without the entire paragraph turns into a headline.

I do use the SiteContent for a blog but do all the layout in WP because it is simpler.
Enjoy!
Aloha, Jenna

Hi Marc, I see some comments from Loes and I am assuming you have things sorted out.
All the best

Correct indeed! I did as she suggested using H3 and it worked! Thank you.

If you have been adding the styles in the WA editor then Try editing it in Wordpress and see if it sticks, if it doesn’t I would imagine it could be corruption in the theme. Although you are using the WA editor, the platform is Wordpress so it may be worth searching the Wordpress tutorials for an answer

Well it's not about using the WA editor on my website. I am talking about the internal WA blog posting mechanism. If my theme on a website affects the internal WA blog posting mechanism, that would seem a bit odd :) but thank you for the idea

Yes I get this but the point I’m getting at is for the purposes of diagnostics if you add the text styles in Wordpress and they work then you can look at there being a problem with the WA editor,, but if the problem still persists after adding the styles in Wordpress then the problem is likely to be the theme files, in which case you may need to reinstall the theme

Thanks. Loes here answered the question as she says H1 and H2 never work with the WA blog, only H3. so I'll try that. cheers Marc.

There is something conflicting on your theme, have you added recently new plugins? Or even a logo or a favicon? I read somewhere that those can cause this too.

The issue is on the WA internal blog, not on my website? Are you then saying something on my plug in for the website affects the look of my WA Blog?? I do thank you for taking a shot at this :)

Aha, the H1, and H2 are not working from the start, try using only H3

ha ha! Thanks! I guess the first blogs i did were at H3, then I moved on to H2 and that is where I got flummoxed! Much appreciated! Marc

Do training materials and blog materials I've create here at WA belong to me? Or do they belong to WA? I saw a thread from a couple of years ago about WA ToS indicating we do

You have the right to disable or delete any of the things you've published on this platform. If Wealthy Affiliate owned the intellectual rights you wouldn't be able to remove your works.

Of course, you wouldn't be able to amend or update them either

Disabling is not the same as deleting. In fact that's an issue that concerns me specifically.

Also, keep in mind that per section 9.1, WA has the right to amend these contract provisions at any time they wish, at least that's the way I read it. That's pretty powerful.

I don't disagree that all of this is positive evidence that WA is not concerned about owning our stuff and in fact they don't own it. I'm sure they probably DON'T want to own it, because if we violate copyright with images or plagiarmism, it becomes their problem, doesn't it.

Remember we're supposed to think big around here :)

So, what happens if someone uploads the next great American novel on their blog ? It's a massive hit and royalties start streaming in..... does WA alter the ToS to get in on the action?

It seems unlikely, as a big legal battle would rage...however...

It's always potentially possible when posting on third party sites. Ultimately the owners have final control.

If you look at facebook, linkedin and the like, you will most likely see that they too also have the right to change the provisions of the agreement/contract/terms at any time. They usually say something like "if you use our service after such a date, you are deemed to accept these new terms ……".

It may be powerful however it is standard.

The WA terms page was last changed Oct 13, 2015 so they do not change the terms too often.

If someone uploads the next great novel on their WA blog, how would they monetize it on WA ?

How would royalties be coming in from that WA blog ?

Once you put the content in your WA blog, it can be accessed from anywhere in the world - from within WA and from within search engine results.

If WA change the terms and you do not like the new terms, you would most likely be able to delete the contents of your WA blog.

If you're really concerned then don't publish anything on this platform. Or YouTube, or Facebook, or Pinterest, or Instagram, or...

Thanks David, haha yes, the great american novel was just an example to illustrate the potential issue.

You make a great point; legally there must need to be some sort of time contraint related to the changing of the ToS.

Seriously Marion?

No, you can't be serious :) But my question is!

Were I operating in a state of mental paralysis, I wouldn't have bothered asking around for answers :)

I think better advice would have been to say: 'If you're really concerned, seek the advice of an attorney and see what they have to say, as you've already suggested.'

Your first answer was pretty good though! Thank you!

Good point.

Seriously, Marc. When it comes to intellectual property rights I would only rely on the advice of a good lawyer who was familiar with international copyright law.

I agree with Diana, that we hold the rights to the IP created here, the wording needs to be read twice but, we actually own it, which is good, but WA can use it for their own 'attraction' purposes.

I don't disagree with you here, that's how I've interpreted it, too. thanks!

If it helps it was something I thought about when creating my trainings here and stopped doing so, for that reason until I found the answer and intepretation of that answer as laid out by Diane

Yes, I've been following your trainings about YouTube with some interest indeed, and have bookmarked some of them. I haven't caught up with it all yet, but I might as well say I'm glad you're doing them. cheers Marc

Hi - here is a link to their Terms of services. Point 3.2 seems to answer your question.

"Subject only to the limited license expressly granted herein, you shall retain all right, title and interest in and to the Customer Content and all intellectual property rights therein. Nothing in this Agreement will confer on Wealthy Affiliate any right of ownership or interest in the Customer Content or the intellectual property rights there"

https://www.wealthyaffiliate.com/terms

Yes, I agree that it 'seems' to, but I'm not an attorney. Sections 3.1 and 9.1 also seem relevant in some way.

I don't have a legal background either. Section 3.1 is about their services, which I read to mean as being the software behind the platform. Perhaps you could ask Kyle or Carson for clarification.

I think you may be right about 3.1. Perhaps they will chime in here, it's important that we clearly know this, imo.

I can't see any reason why you can't use the pieces of training you posted here For other purposes. An interesting question I'd not thought about

The relevant passages that delimit (or not) intellectual property rights are sections 3.2, 3.3 and 9.1 in WA's terms of service.

yes I read them, I can't see any reason why you can't repurpose them

Fair enough, but the question is about ownership of intellectual property, not about the ability to repurpose it.

you shall retain all right, title and interest in and to the Customer Content and all intellectual property rights therein. Nothing in this Agreement will confer on Wealthy Affiliate any right of ownership or interest in the Customer Content or the intellectual property rights there"

I think the important bits is you should retain all right title and interest and also nothing will confirm wealthy affiliate any right of Ownership in the intellectual property rights.

If you are unsure why don't you PM Carson and ask him

Yes, that's the passage we've been discussing ;)

To answer your question, I've ruled that out.

it should be obvious that seeking an answer about contract conditions from the Owners of WA is not as conducive to protecting my interests as getting answers from customers of WA, who are on my side of the contract. See?

Alternatively, as I said, I could seek an outside attorney.

One doesn't collaborate with the other party's attorneys in order to protect one's position in a contract.

If you're going to be happy asking Kyle and Carson, by all means carry on, but I imagine any answer will be verified by their attorneys in order to protect their interests.

Hello WA team! I want to market to both teachers and learners in an education niche. Do I need two websites, two subdomains for a main site or just one website? I started creat

I am an online teacher and my niche is for educators. I can see your dilemma. Maybe just start with one and then let it expand naturally as you continue to grow your website. It may be a lot to take on at once. Just my opinion though. :-)

Good insight, thanks! Marc

Hi marchanna, it is Debterrelll here, I just wanted to say I think you should make two websites. However, I am new at this online business, just a suggestion. Best of luck.
Debbie

Having started to build a second site here at WA, because of the issue you are facing, I have and before reading Andre's answer decided to focus on one Blog, because I agree with his answer to you, you can quite happily combine both in the same one

Plus on a side note, you don't know, what peoples interests are away from work

I recently discovered that a former dance teacher of ours was heavily involved in property and had a blog with both on it, because she considered it an extension of her personality

Bit long winded, but hopefully helpful

definitely helpful to get another supportive perspective. I'm not sure about combining the blog rolls for each element. I'll have to see how it shapes out, whether I want two blogrolls or one. But I'm definitely going for a static homepage and menu for teachers/learners. I guess only one privacy page and one 'about me' page for everything....cheers thanks for your comments Dave! Marc

Seems logical to me Marc and its what I do

Teachers need to learn as well as teach I am sure you can combine both aspects within the one site.
You can get learners linked to some great teachers, ideas, courses etc and get teachers to give their expertise on techniques for learners to achieve.

Exactly :)

Thanks for the quick response Apache. Yes, that is my instinct as well, to have only one site with synergistic elements. Both teachers and students are recruited on the site, so I can see one site is a good plan and it's what I intuitively prefer.

Thank you for your insight. Marc

Most welcome Marc plus the fact is it is an educational site so they both would fit perfectly together.
Wishing you well
Andre

You can have both in one website but create two different pages each with blogs/posts running. That way you can add links in one content referring to the other for info. It is also much more manageable to work on one website. That way your targeted traffic for each will all go to your one. Plus later it saves you money when buying a domain.

Thank you Snazzy! I appreciate the quick response.

My site can have one homepage (on this theme I am using). Are you suggesting to add two additional static pages that each have separate blogrolls? With one main homepage covering both?

What you say makes sense, any clarification is appreciated! Marc

Give it an awesome catchy name that relates to both.

Right, I can do that; that's not the issue, though. what the clarification I am looking for is, how to structure the website in the manner you've suggested. If you have any ideas, I'm all ears! cheers Marc.

Yes that's what I was suggesting two pages with rolling posts and one home page covering both...maybe Andre or someone can suggest an alternative, but that's what I suggest.

cool makes sense and thanks again! Marc

Perhaps create a menu relating to Teachers and another menu for students and you can also when writing a post do an internal link along the way.

You are welcome :)

Even better :)

Thank you! Yes, I've seen other competitive sites in the niche do this but wasn't sure it was optimal from an SEO standpoint. Hence I considered the sub-domain/two sites alternative. Menu great idea! cheers Marc.

Enjoy and wishing you well with your site
