Today Started Out Really Well

I got up and was ready to go. I've been slacking the past week or so due to me feeling under the weather and in pain. Today I felt better than I had all week and actually felt like I was up for doing something.

Now, it's just going to be one of those days, I think. I'll try to push through, but it's just piled up on me.

At breakfast I tried to pour a pitcher of water everywhere. Thankfully, I only got a little in the sink, so not that bad of a thing to do. I could live with that.

Then I ran into a china hutch and that smarted pretty damn badly. I shook it off and figured I would just be a klutz today. That's not a big deal since most of my work is sitting down.

However I forgot my laptop riser. This helps so my neck doesn't hurt so much when I'm at the computer. Now that is a big deal for me as I work 12 hours shifts and craning my neck down is not something I want to do.

The kicker for today was me getting to my post and checking my work emails. My boss has decided that in an emergency I am to put my life on the line in order to open a door.

The doors are supposed to unlock on their own so that they swing open with a touch. They didn't yesterday, while I was off. So, now it's my job.

Yes, you heard it. It's now protocol that if there's an emergency, such as a tornado warning, I am supposed to go and open the emergency exit doors, which take roughly 20 seconds to open. 20 seconds in an emergency is a lifetime. It can very well be the deciding factor between life and death.

So, I sent out an email to my boss asking for clarification so that if necessary I can take it above him and get this sorted out. Now I get to wait, sitting on pins and needles because he has the habit of saying things in a way that make me look like an idiot, for him to email me back.

It says something when my boss can make me cry over email, but this is something that I'm not going to back down on. My life could be at risk because of his change in protocol.

I get to try to put all that out of my head now so that I can be ready to post tomorrow as my schedule dictates.

Wish me luck,

Michelle/Anne

P.S. I will update when I find out more info.

Update: Well, at least it didn't take all day for him to get back to me. So I'm apparently selfish that I want to preserve my own life and not help others. They do plan on fixing this problem, but with the way things work around here it may not get done until next year.

I need to look at my handbook to see if I can find something that at least proves my point that we aren't supposed to put ourselves in unnecessary danger. Lucky me.

Michelle, this reads as it should; challenging day and not at all funny, but I can not help but to imagine, your pouring water everywhere, without smiling

Thank you for the excellent writing, it is what I enjoy in visiting your posts

Bright and Sunny wishes for you,my friend...respect,David

Thank you, David, for your support. Thankfully I got through the day, it was my Monday so it was bound to go horribly wrong. Still feeling a little bruised by it, but it's better today.

It wasn't a complete flop as I wrote over 1,200 words and finished a lesson here, but I did have to wait until closer to the end of day.

Take care!

What a day! A handbook is needed “On Being Boss” that outlines a protocol about “acting” and not “reacting”. You took charge of what your boss should have taken charge of.

You did well.

Mojalefa.

Thank you for the support. Unfortunately what my boss says goes at this site, which is both a blessing and a curse. Hopefully it get's fixed before an actual emergency happens.

Take care.

One option on the door policy is to contact the fire department or work place health and safety. I am sure they will have an opinion on locked emergency exits. Crash doors need to be openable at all times.

Thank you for the support. The place where I work doesn't really handle "common sense" all that well. It's actually a running joke with me and my coworkers.

This door does open, after you hold the bar for 2 seconds and wait for it to unlock for 15 seconds, but the bar is on my side of the wall and not the data center floor itself.

Protocol actually should have any extra people on the floor go through the emergency exit doors that lead outside. However, from what I heard of the drill they performed on Wednesday they decided to stay inside the building since it was a tornado drill.

I've just thrown my hands up and mutter to myself that no wonder there is such a high turnover rate and that no one who works there is really happy with their job.

Which is why I'm strengthening my resolve to get my website off the ground as quickly as possible. I do not want to stay in such an environment.

Take care.

GM, you did the right thing by asking. Every life is valuable! Best wishes! Go crush it!

Thank you for your support. I did get part of what I wanted to do done so the day wasn't a total wash.

Take care.
