Money by definition

This one has been one of my favourites. There was a time I studied witchcraft/Wiccan stuff. For the sake of knowing it. Same with Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. Understanding the differences and similarities is shocking sometimes. But I am not here to talk about religion.

At least not the kind of religion I mentioned above.

Money

"noun

A current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes."

That's the original definition by Oxford; of course, today, we must add a third medium called crypto, which exists only in digital form. (Although as a side note: 90% of officially accounted currency today is in fact in digital form. That is data from the US; other countries may have different numbers.)

Origin

Middle English: from Old French moneie, which comes from the Latin moneta, which means mint, which initially was the title of the goddess Juno, in whose temple in Rome money was minted.

When I was studying Witchcraft, I had the Book of Goddesses and the Book of Gods. They were an extensive and long list of deities with their origins, powers, stories. One of my chosen goddesses at the time was Diana. Interestingly, she was a goddess in both greek and roman religions, and today she is a revered goddess in Wiccan and Neopagan beliefs.

She was always portraited with arrows and bow as if she was a hunter of some kind, but she was known to be the protector of women during pregnancy and labour.

Diana was the goddess who was also called Juno Lucina, goddess of childbirth, and she had a temple from 344BC where later the Roman Mint (their currency at the time) was held. Much like a bank or treasury.

Fertility and childbirth are often associated with growth, prosperity, and wealth, so the connection makes sense.

It makes me think that it's funny when someone says to someone greedy: "Your God, is money", but based on this data, the correct sentence should sound like this: "Your Goddess, is money."

I'm very leery of crypto! Most of it seems to be here today, gone in 60 seconds!

Excellent post, Andy!

Jeff

Thank you! And yes, I agree crypto is, for now, unregulated and very, very volatile. So I don't trade crypto, but I keep an eye on it.

Yes, Andy, it is worth keeping an eye on!
