Learning to Link

Oh wow! I was so frustrated yesterday as I couldn't link any Amazon products to my site. The code Amazon provided only resulted in a blank page, by pressing on the Get Link button. There is another one with an arrow beside the Get Link button, that is the correct one! Clicking on the arrow gives one the correct link to the product. Today, I signed on as an Ebay affiliate, and could not figure out how to get the correct code for links there.

Finally, after a frustrating few hours, Googling for information, most of which was not helpful, I found 2 sentences in a Ebay discussion group. The writer mentioned that one has to go to the Affiliate dashboard, pick Tools, then Bookmarklet, and right there was a little blue icon with a little arrow that I needed to drag up to the Favorites section of my Google bookmark bar. That resulted in a page image icon and words Default Campaign. I was not so sure that was going to result in anything more than another blank page.

However, then I opened up the page of the product that I wanted so the product's URL was sitting in the search or URL section and hesitantly clicked on the item labelled Default Campaign. What happened? The code magically appeared! I copied, pasted to it's designated link on my page, updated the page, previewed and there it was, working like a charm! Then a few minutes ago, I learned from Marion Black here on WA, how to use the same link buttons in the editor, to provide links from one page to another on my website. This solved another problem for me.

My husband thought it would be a good idea to have a short cut of some sort at the bottom of some of my longer pages so he didn't have to scroll all the way back to the top for my menu. This solved that problem as I put links to relevant pages at the bottom of some of my pages. My muscles are tight in my shoulders from the stress and I might have lost a few hairs, but the success feels great! Hopefully what I learned in the last 2 days will help others with the same problem. I think I will take the evening off :)

I am going crazy trying to link in Amazon. Instead of a nice little link I get a paragraph of ugly stuff and I don't know what I am doing wrong. Can someone help please?

Make sure you click on the "down arrow" right beside the "get link" button...that will give you the link/code for the product you want to hyperlink. If it is one specific item, not just a general category search, you can also click on "Shorten URL with amzn.to?" to get a much less cumbersome looking link.

Yes, in my Blog above, I mention that I had the same frustration with Amazon. One would think that clicking on the GET LINK button would be the thing to do... when you click, you get code. However, THAT code does not work. I discovered quite by accident, that you have to click on the ARROW beside the GET LINK button.

That is a good tip on shortening code, I will have to try that, thanks!

I hear you, Maddy. Sometimes it's those things that seem would only take 10 or 15 minutes turn into hours. It could be frustrating at the time, but quite rewarding when you figure it out or come across training that makes it clear. Marion's training has helped me out several times. Enjoy your evening off, it's well deserved, Maddy!

Thanks great information. Thanks for doing all the work for us. I've tagged the page and hopefully I'll be able to find it when I need it.
