Avatar or the real you?

There have been Blogs or Tutorials here on creating your Gravatar account so you can put a photo or image as your face on posts, pages and comments. Many bloggers put their own face in the Gravatar while the rest of us might use a generic image of a car, a pet or whatever.

There is so little privacy online as it is, with all our private information in cyberspace. I for one, have recently chosen a simile of me, an Avatar to be used as a more public face. You can still see my real face here in WA, and on Facebook, everywhere else I have chosen to use my Avatar.

How do you create a simile of you? An Avatar? Easy.. first you can click on this URL http://avatarmaker.com/ and have some fun! The opening page will say WELCOME TO AVATAR MAKER, Please choose your Gender. So that is what you do, pick male or female. Now the next page is where you will construct the new you.

Start with FACE, choose your shape, then choose your skin colour and your mouth, nose and ears. Next you could click on EYES, and then choose your eye shape, iris, eyebrows and glasses (if any). Each time you pick one of your choices, you can choose the colour for your eyes (iris), your eyebrows and glasses. If you don't think the colour is quite right, choose a colour that might be close, and you can change it more by clicking on the square in the lower right corner... there you can tweak it a bit more.

The next on the list is HAIR, choose your hair style and colour, then move on to CLOTHES, choose your style and colour... now you are almost done. The last on the list is the background behind your Avatar, it's just called BACK. Once you are done, you will save it by downloading it. There is a button underneath your new Avatar, called DOWNLOAD. Click on DOWNLOAD, then choose the image size of PNG 200 x 200.

The program will take you to where you would save anything that you download. Once there, whether it's your Desktop or another folder, SAVE it and move on. Your Avatar is ready to be downloaded into your Gravatar account, and used there instead of a photo. Now wasn't that fun?

The above program saved the avatar as a PNG file on my computer listed under PC. I can use it almost anywhere. I found out today that Instagram did not allow me to use it, not sure why... maybe because it's a PNG file. When I picked out any old photo, a JPG one, it was accepted. I too am camera shy, which is why I love my avatar too :)

I love my avatar. This is the answer to a prayer for a person who is camera-shy. I now have more of visual online!!

If only I knew how to work with a .png file. More learning.

Thanks,
Sue

Yes, thank you. I didn't know this. Gosh, first month user here. There is so much on WA, the learning never ends ( at least, for me ).

Neat!

Yes, much fun. Thank you.

You say, there is so little privacy online, I say there are so many anonymous replies under blogs. People who are hiding behind an avatar and a nickname.

By the way, I have made an avatar, but I comment as me

That is true too. Anyone can put a false photo or false name even without an Avatar though. However, Pen names, which is what I use, were used to protect women's identity as far back as a couple of hundred years ago. I have been accosted on line by men, who have less than honourable intentions, when I had my real face and name on Google Plus. One of my Facebook accounts has been shut down a couple of times due to someone trying to take my identity, again recently (I use my real face on both my Facebook accounts). I deleted some shady looking accounts and tightened up my security. It is more of a business account so I had it on Public. Yesterday I switched it back to Friends only. All of our information is out there in cyberspace, not just in a filing cabinet somewhere. Since photos are used to identify real people, hackers use those too. Anyone who tries to 'connect' with me, by greeting me with another 'hey pretty lady' or 'how are you Dear?' gets deleted.

The hé pretty ladies get blocked

yup I do that too. Some of them make my skin crawl. I have been getting emails from some scammers lately, responding to a car we have for sale. This person, or persons, claims he or she can't come to see the car, but they will send me a cheque, and when it 'clears', a delivery person will come by to finish the transaction. I scolded the first one for being so dishonest, then I got a second name, using the same line. I increased the price just to have some fun, but he still wanted to send a cheque. yesterday, I got another one, different name again, and this time I increased the price of the car to one million dollars LOL! I hope no one falls for this scammers' scheme. He or she wants me to use his email address too, instead of going through the channels of the online buy and sell service I am using. I did not fall for that either. Just what I need, my email service flooded with his spam!

Sensible, always be cautious, Marilyn

Clear and detailed instructions Marilyn - thank you! ~Mark

Thanks Mark :)
