About Crumbs - Breadcrumbs in particular
Please help!
Is anyone around to give instructions in plain English "How to get breadcrumbs to work"?
I am not looking for "copy this code and paste it in your .php file". The web is full with this line. Maybe something like
"Editor>Filename>location etc. All the info I find on the web is useless for regular folks like me.
Thanks in advance
John

Thank you all for giving us all this knowledge, I saved it for the weekend thus study it and to see how this can help my site
Ok breadcrumb is a way to add ease of navigation to your site and Google like breadcrumbs on sites
You do have to add the code to a PHP file in the editor
I will explain how to do this so you don't mess it up
First you need the code, you get this from the breadcrumbs plugin you are using
I will say this, if your not comfortable with messing around with your WordPress PHP editor, leave it alone until you get more confident with WordPress
But if you want to know, here is how you do this
Go to appearance>>themes >>editor
There you will see all the PHP files, you insert the code in the "page file" but first you should copy and paste the whole file on to a text editor so if you mess up you can just paste the code back into the file
You then copy and paste your breadcrumbs code under the first time you see the word "content" click save changes and then your breadcrumbs will appear on every page, so your visitors can navigate there way back form all the pages they visit
Be warned, if you mess up the code you theme will not function correctly, so stay away from it if you are not sure
If you want to learn word press without breaking your actual site then you should get instant WordPress its free
I have a blog post on this, it may help you

Hope this all helps, its a real steep learning curve, this thing we do

Thanks a lot Barry. That is "plain English". Now I know where to put the darn code. I am pretty good with editing code, not necessarily java or php, but knowing where to put it helps. I have a test site on rubix to try things out first, so I don't have to worry about messing up.
Again, thanks a lot. Your are being followed now by the one with the weird humor. :-). If I should make it over one more time to your neck of the woods, I'll look you up and buy you a drink. See, that's my kind of humor.

Awesome, thanks for the info and thanks John for the question. Like Karyn, I did not know what a ''breadcrumb'' was, it only made me think of Little Poucet, lol.
That would be awesome to know even though I know only a little tiny itsy bitsy about bread crumbs.
Hi John,
Certain themes are more suited for breadcrumbs, I have one that uses them and then you load a plugin for it.
The plugin is called "Breadcrumb NavXT" and the theme I am using is "PaperCuts", I believe that the theme "Cleanr" also uses it.
Please note that I used "s to highlight the names, just use what is in between the quotes

Hi. The setting to enable breadcrumbs is usually hidden somewhere in your theme's settings page. There you can also enable them on posts, pages, archives, ... But it depends on how your theme is defined.
Did you search within WA? Not too long ago, someone talked about this. Is it a plugin? I can't remember what the discussion was about. Someone will come to the rescue, hang in there, John!

Why would you even need to? Is your site really so large and complicated that it's necessary. This article makes that point http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/03/17/breadcrumbs-in-web-design-examples-and-best-practices/ - Sorry probably not what you want - hopefully one of the super techie people will be able to help. :) Beverley
Hi Beverly. Just reading a lot of Google Stuff and the impression I am getting is that it is helpful for SEO. Thanks for the link
