Hi, As you know, every website needs a logo but buying a logo can be expensive. There is a better, easy and free way to make your own logo! In this post I will share with you step by step how to make a logo for free.

The wonderful website Canva.com

So it all starts with a website called Canva.com, it is a free to use platform to build your own designs for social media, etc.

After following the steps to register just sign in to your account.

And yes I just notice that everything is in dutch, that is no problem because I will walk you trough in English.

Let the magic begin

After signing in you will see "Logo" on top, just click it to get started.

At this moment you should see a blank template and Layouts to choose from on the left.

Go trough all the layouts until you find a layout that you like.

When you click on the layout that you like you should see something like this.

Now start editing by clicking what you want to change.

I changed my black background and white logo to a white background and black logo by clicking on everything one by one and changed the color.

When you are happy with your design you can download it, be sure to choose PNG.

The background will not be transparent because this is the free version but I will explain how to do this.

Let's have fun with Photoshop CC!

I have a subscription with Photoshop CC, it is not expensive at all! But you do always get the latest version of Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud).

If you do not have Photoshop yet, you can just start a free 30 days trial on the Adobe website and do everything you need to do.

Now let's walk trough the process of deleting the background in Photoshop.

First open Photoshop of course, and go to File - Open and open the Logo.

Now you have opened your logo in Photoshop we can start editing it.

Go to Select - Color Range...

Now you have to select the white background and set Fuzziness to 30 and press OK.

When you did this you will see a dotted line around the logo, this means all the white on the picture is selected.

Now the only thing left to do is press DELETE on your keyboard.

You should see that the background changes to a checkerboard. This means there is no background.

Now before we save it we should remove the excess space around the logo. This is important!

On the left in the toolbar press the selection tool and drag a selection around the logo.

When you did this go back to the toolbar and above the selection tool, press the move tool and press any of the arrow keys once. (I forgot to take a screenshot of this but this is an important step)

This should make sure only the logo is selected.

Remember, the screenshot only shows the logo selected with the select tool, this is not how it looks like after the move tool, after the move tool it should look like the previous screenshot.

Now for some shortcuts on your keyboard. CTRL is on Windows, Command on a Mac

While the logo is selected start with pressing CTRL + C (press the ctrl and c button, not the + button). This will copy the logo.

Now press CTRL + N. This will make a new document.

Make sure Clipboard is selected and press Create.

You will see that it pastes only your logo but it also gives the white background back, no worries.

You won't have to do all the steps again.

On your right you will see 2 layers, you logo and a background.

Next to the background you will notice an Eye Icon, Press this.

This should remove the background and the checkerboard should appear again.

One final step!

Go to File - Save As.

Give it a name and be sure to save it as .PNG!

This time the image will be saved without a background.

That's it! You got yourself a free self made Logo!

Hope you enjoyed!

Greetings,

Maarten Vercauteren

Thank you for your post!

AS a free and powerful alternative to Photoshop, I recommend GIMP. I use it all the time and it's excellent for image manipulation...

Hi Maarten,

I like to keep it simple I used the Paint app in windows to create all my logos for my websites, of course I am slightly artistic which helps in graphic design.

But for those that want to get a more duplicated or uniform type logo Canva would be a great start!

Yes this is for the less technical people here.
