Playing The Chocolate Game
I have to admit here that one thing I love about having children is being able to act like one every now and then!
It was my daughter's 6th birthday yesterday and we have had a 3 day celebration. On Saturday I took my kids plus 3 of my daughter's friends to the Spur Restaurant (to blow some of the vouchers I got paid in for promoting their 50th birthday recently).
Then yesterday we had a family bash at my father in law's house.
Today we had a party at my kids school in her class. I took party packs for each child, stuffed full of sweets plus a huge Trolls cake and some cupcakes.
Add in some chips and fruit juice and we had a great time.
The highlight of the day today was the chocolate game. I was just so surprised that none of the kids had ever played it or heard of it before! What a shame, but so glad I could educate them in one of the best kids party games ever!
In case you have never heard of it, all the kids sit in a circle and in the middle is a plate with a knife and fork, plus a big slab of chocolate. There are also other things in the middle like a hat and scarf for example. We had a pink wig (since it was a Trolls theme) and a pink birthday girl sash. The kids have to take turns throwing the dice and if you throw a six you get to sit in the middle, put on the clothing and try to eat the chocolate. There are rules though, you are not allowed to use your fingers. You have to use the knife and fork and you can only eat one block at a time. You can eat as much as you like if you just stick to those rules.
If anyone else throws a six you must stop immediately and hand over to that person.
These kids were fortunate though since it is so hot today (38°C) and the chocolate was so soft and easy to cut. I remember my mom used to keep the chocolate in the fridge to make the game extra tricky!
Needless to say that the kids were worked up into a frothy of excitement by this game.
Is it just me or does it feel like things when I grew up were so much more exciting with real games played... now it just seems like parents get jumping castles for their kids and leave them to figure it out with their pals?
When I was growing up we played pass the parcel, the chocolate game, musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey and more at every birthday party. Now you ask a child if they have heard of these game and they look up at you with a look of confusion!
Oh well I will have to educate as many of them as possible through my kids birthdays!

Musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, okay now I feel old. These were games from my youth as well. Every chance I get, I teach my kids about what we did when I was a kid. Oh brother, now I am THAT guy!
We finally got out of our hot season here, finally dipped in the the 80's (29 C) during the day.
But Steve those were the "good old days" right? OMG I didn't just say that did I?
PS did you just call me old??
I’ve not heard of the chocolate game but I think I’d like to play it ! OK, yes I’m a chocoholic!
Parties, today are almost usually 'telephoned' in!
I remember a lot of running around, yelling, laughing and just making stuff about the day and about the play, regardless of what we had to work with!
(I would have killed for a big hunk of chocolate!)
I never heard of this game - sounds like a lot of messy fun. I will look for opportunities to try it with my grandkids. Still, your mom sounds like more fun than the chocolate game...
My mom is awesome :) She put a lot of work into our parties when we were little. I can only truly appreciate it now!
LOL we were inside so it wasn't in the direct sunlight.. if it was I would have to arm those kids with a straw not a knife and fork :)
I could deal with it. It is 38 here, right now, but that's 38 F, and I'm not ready for the cold weather this season... It's fall up here in the northern hemisphere, but it felt like summer a week ago.

I know musical chairs and pin the tail on the donkey but never heard of the chocolate game. Pinatas are fun too....especially filled with chocolate goodies. Hmmmm, seems it's all about the chocolate which works for me. Thanks for explaining this new game.
