A Good Day For a Mini-Retreat

Instead of wasting time on the traditional New Years resolutions, How about spending some time in a Mini-Retreat setting down a concrete Vision for the coming year.

Here's how to create your retreat:

  1. Move away from all screens. Find a place that has a different atmosphere - on the beach, on a log in the forest, at the library, in a coffee shop for example. Create some atmosphere with some reflective music, preferably without lyrics that distract. I-pod or smartphone is good.
  2. Take along something to write in - My fave is the Moleskine but a plain old scribbler or legal pad will do just fine. Be sure to take along your favourite pen. Believe it or not, I still love a fountain pen (showing my age here I guess).
  3. Begin by journalling your review of the past year. Focus on what really worked and what you are proud of. Be sure to include the various aspects of your life - your business, family, relationships, community. Just write whatever flows - this is called stream of consciousness writing. In Appreciative Inquiry, this is the Discover stage.
  4. Now ask yourself and record - How can I build on these successes? What possibilities do I see? This is the Dream phase.
  5. The Design phase asks you to decide on the direction you will take. Keep this at the high level. What approach and what strategies?
  6. And finally, what will you Deliver? What needs to be done? How will you know you've been successful?
  7. Now summarize in a Vision statement. Make note of how this exercise made you feel. Did you experience some energy and optimism?

Back your desk be sure to record your vision and tasks in your favourite planning platform. I keep it simple and use the free Google Keep.

Let me know your business vision for 2018. How did your Mini-retreat work for you?

I love the re-set of a New Year and to look back on the last.

I try to, at least once a week, shut down screens and just enjoy this wonderful Island in the Pacific I get to call home. My own mini retreat!

Thanks for the post and insight, all the best to you in 2018

Actually, I do too. Sunday is a no screen day for me. All the best to you too NCH

Resettling your mind and getting your bearings is a great business tactic Lowell Ann!

Some solopreneurs do this twice per year - September and January. Both seem to represent new beginnings. Thanks for dropping by Michael.
