A new law in the Netherlands must make the internet safer, but is this true?

A whole discussion has started here and a referendum has been proclaimed where people can vote for and against the new law.
This is what the law comes down at:

Would you agree that the Government reads everything you chat, click, and do online, and tap all your phone calls and messages? Yes or No?

What would you click?

The Referendum result

47.2% voted YES

48.3% voted NO

4.5% voted blank

Dissapointing that the NO sayers won narrowly, but the good thing about it is that the parliament has to review this law carefully. And the complaints are loud and clear known to the opposition. This law will come through, but with the necessary adjustments in the area of privacy.

No they don't, and they're not allowed to. Though there is some complications with facebook and google - Facebook have a record of revealing private stuff, atleast in the past. And google are using data of users selling it to ad companies.
Basically we're all being tracked with our presence online to some degree. There's no way we can stop it, all we can do is to accept it, knowing they're not targeting specific individuals, they're just using big data for profit.

We can vote against the fact that they are allowed to hack any computer! There is a huge difference in following what people do in public and tracking private phone calls and computers

To clarify - is that the citizen’s advisory referendum in response to the legislation tabled last year, or some other?

I think your bigger problem is not that your security sector is asking for permission to do this when they think they need to - but that - in order to make a case to justify targeting a group or individual they need to ask for a higher body to evaluate their request... and that higher body/Council doesn’t even exist yet. They’re the ones who say yes or no to requests. So that privacy isn’t whimsically tested.

Or... correct me if things have changed... and you have already stood up a council to provide oversight...

Yes, the referendum is a public response. Until now they had to get a cord order for every individual case to tap and hack, and they are often denied because of violation of peoples individual rights and privacy, so they invented in this new law "legal councils" to skip the cord order. And I know, here in the Nederlands, that when things have to go through separate channels, the results can turn out very messy and lawful rights will be overruled, and the innocent civilian is going to be the victim.

But as I said to Erin, (Herrinnelson) people don't care about anything here, their lives are too good, they only care about where their next holiday will be, when the next episode is of Walking the death and where their favorite football team is playing, and which new car they are going to buy this year.

As far as I know you don’t have any such council to provide assurance of independent oversight yet - that’s the first assurance. Kind of like trying to construct the footings of a house after you’ve already put the walls up. ;)

Definitely not Loes. The logistics behind this makes it impossible. However, they do check certain things and no doubt flags are raised when people access various sites.

Btw, there is something you can do about it. Buy a VPN. The one I am affiliated to is one of the cheapest it will only cost you $1.91 p/month. A small price to pay for security and anonymity?

hi Craig,

Can I ask which VPN please?

Hi David, PureVPN. Offer is only available through my site. They don't have this offer any more on their site, strangely enough.

Hi Craig, Can you PM me your site. I would like to look at the VPN

Thanks
Braynb

Done Bryan!

I guess that is democracy in action, Loes, that is a tricky one when privacy or independence is given away is gone never to return.
This government may no use this information but then again governments come and go. So who is to say that the status quo will not change down the track.
Our whole societal infrastructure is being challenged worldwide, as everyone struggles to keep up with technology.

I hate any referendum - just look what happened here in the UK. The problem with any referendum is that ordinary people simply haven't got the time, education and inclination to research the topic in detail and make an informed decision....

Anyway, in your case it would be a very definite NO for me. Sounds like your government isn't any better than ours - wanting to poke their nose into everything and control everything.

Well, in the US, yes.

I understand to make us safer. Yet, the streets are still the with the same crime like the old days.

Think about it:
If a one person was doing this same 'safety action' just only to you, that would be considered a stoker. So, what is the difference in the government doing this?

Oh yeah, they are not asking you, they're telling you.

Then they say, "It's for your safety." How? And I don't know who is watching, listening to everything I do.

In my opinion, it has nothing to do with being safe. It's all about control.

You are right, it has nothing to do with safety, but everything to do with controlling

What a joke! My obvious answer would be no! Think of all the jobs it would create though!

I can imagine it now “oooh did you see what that Wayne said to that Loes on that Wealthy Affiliate Platform, he’s only gone and got a problem with his floppy drive again and 23 other members made a comment about his floppy.”

Some real intellectual conversations going around the government Office’s.

We are all being monitored anyway, are they getting bored!

We have got to laugh or else you really would cry.

Wayne

Yes, very important government affairs

There goes our rights as citizens of the Free World'.

This nothing new it all started with The panopticon which is a type of institutional building and a system of control designed by the English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham in the late 18th century.

The plan was so designed that inmates were being watched by a single watchman without their knowledge.

It’s not possible for a single watchman to observe them the fact that the inmates cannot know when they are being watched means that they are motivated to act as though they are being watched at all times.

Apologies if I turned this into a political lecture. This was part of my degree course in Political Science. It's a no from me

Thank you, they are warming up the people like a frog in cold water

definitely not in my little country of Jamaica. However, if u live in a big developed, and rich country like the Netherlands, USA, Canada, UK.... yes, they have the capability to do it. they have systems set up to do it, and they collaborate with the GAAF and the major ISPs to do it!..so my answer is Yes i believe they do...and worse if you live in China...everything you do on the internet in China is monitored...everything!

P.S, For my friends here on WA not familiar with the acronym GAAF, it stands for the big four tech companies that have a vast amount of your of internet data....Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook.

In China, not only what you do on the internet or phone calls, the streets are full of camera's you can not take one step outside without being watched

I say No. Like you said below Loes, why do they need to be able to read everything, if they do not do anything with it.

The mighty people loves control. They want to control everything and everybody. In the end the whole world is like a prison.

Well, I have nothing to hide, but it's nice to have some kind of privacy. Otherwise I would have become a music star or an actresse!

:-O

o right, Pernilla, I don't have anything to hide too, but I don't want to share everything either
