How does Google react on back links?

The Google updates of Panda and Penguin have taken care of all the irrelevant back links on a website.

I believe that hundreds of irrelevant back links in comments on my website will result in a penalty from Google.

Matt Cutts about backlinks in comments (2 minutes video)

Asking for comments

I do ask for comments, but the first thing I do is delete every irrelevant back link to the website which is provided.

When my workathomefuture website gets backlinks in comments from niche websites about baby clothes, or websites about food supplements, they are out. But when I get a link to Facts about internet marketing or make money online, I let them stay.

Do you place your website link?

When you place a comment on a website do you leave your websitelink? Even when it's irrelevant to the niche you are commenting on?

I mean, when they ask for your:

Name:
Email address:
Website: ????
Do you fill this in?

How do you handle this?

I don't leave my website I feel we're helping each other out here and feel your helping each other build content and trust with google so leaving my site that has links could maybe penalize them.

That's what I am afraid off too

And as we all know the only true links google likes is internal links

Lucky me, I have a lot of those:)

I'm with you on irrelevant links Loes.
I always take them out and if the actual comment mentions products not related to my site I disapprove it.

That's one reason and the other one for me is that those links may give you a 404 in the future because the site no longer exists.
I sometime delete the email as well.

Hope you are well over there in the Netherlands.
Robert

Thank you, yes, very well:) but do you leave your link in the comment form on other websites?

If its relevant to what the post is about I might leave my link for further information and I explain this in the comment.
If the person takes it out I don't have a problem with that but its their loss.
Have a great Friday.
Robert

I cannot say for certain but reputable names like forbes suggests going to other sites and guest commenting to increase your site visibility. The article that I read in forbes says that google actually LIKES to see that you are active on other sites.

Yes, Google likes activity, but dislikes irrelevant links, a comment means activity, but does the irrelevant link works against it?

"The article that I read in Forbes says that google actually LIKES to see that you are active on other sites."

But I don't think they're saying you should be leaving "irrelevant back link" and submitting comments that are totally unrelated to the subject of the page :)

Yes, I know Google likes activity, but when I comment on a baby clothing website, and leave my moneymake niche link, and they return the favor and leave a baby clothing link on my website. Those are totally irrelevant for both websites.

And in the give and take comment thread there are thousands of these irrelevant connections made daily.

I just wonder, is this in the long term harmful?

"..and they return the favor.." it's the returns of "favor" that confuses people thinking hey I did you a "favor" therefore it's only fair I get back the same :)

With that in mind, I think it's just a situation where both parties thinking they're helping each other, but forgot about the negative effects that actually leaves behind. I believe they are not meant to spam, just wasn't on the awareness sides of "irrelevant connections". No one to blame, but hope we can learn from one another to make it right :)

Thanks Loes, you're the best person I follow on WA, and I do enjoy everything you do and say :)

"but when I comment on a baby clothing website, and leave my moneymake niche link, and they return the favor and leave a baby clothing link on my website." ... LOL :) :)

So... There seems to be a little confusion here. Well, for me anyways. What we are saying is not to input your website address in the 'website' contact field? Just put your name? Also, should I be going through and deleting them all? Especially if they are not close to my Niche? Google sees this as a negative right?

Thanks for your help guys :)

That is my question here, do we, or don't we leave our website URL? That's were this discussion is about

I always do when I comment on other's websites in the comment thread within WA, just so when they see my name and my website, they may remember me to also help me by leaving a comment on my website.

I just thought it was for general information and had no problem leaving it.

But now I'm starting question whether this will really have a negative impact on my website's reputation. My intention is definitely not to leave it as a backlink. It would be great to get some answers as to whether this does any harm. I will be following this thread.

Thanks for asking such an important question because we may be doing some things wrong and not even know about it, unless somebody brings it up.

I was asked by a member to remove the backlinks placed on my website, because they were irrelevant and harmful for their website, so this question arose by me.

Sorry they did that you Loes.
If I got that I would say that I have never done that before and don't know how to go about actioning it.
I would ask them to create a tutorial so that everyone will learn from it.
9 /10 when you ask someone to take action they run away and do nothing.

I know how to remove website links from comments, and it made me ask this question

From that video, it says randomly commenting won't get you into trouble. When you do it as a scheme you will leave an obvious pattern about what it's for.

Doing 10 comments a day for a year will be noticed.
Doing 1-10 a day is random as long as you aren't just getting backlinks from your comments.

Hi Eric, can you explain this sentence, as long as you aren't just getting backlinks from your comments.
I do not get this

Filling in the fields when you leave comments is a specific action. When you have only one strategy in place it's pretty simple to tell what you are doing it for.

You can also gain backlinks from different actions such as guest blogs, writing and publishing ebooks, sharing infographics, using social media, using a Q&A site like Quora, being quoted or anything you can think of.

What he was saying is to mix things up and don't make one strategy your only go-to. In other words, don't try to game the system by making it obvious and going nuts with one strategy.

That's exactly it, we are motivated here to place 5-6 comments a day, that is 35-40 a week, and very onesided. When you don't do all that other stuff, besides a bit of sharing on social media, does this going to hurt you in the long term?

I doubt it because they are looking for the people who are the extreme. I don't think I would recommend everyone do the same thing but to adjust their schedules enough to include variations.

You will have to think about the long-term strategy, like how many per post, how many you do for one post a day.

The way Bo showed me to do it is to link one of your posts URLs for a comment and change it everytime you make a new comment.

That will get you a lot of variation and not stick you with 10 links for this URL and 10 for that URL every day.

10 links are being used but it's 10 different ones each day.

Hopefully, that makes sense.

That is a great piece of advice, honestly.

Yes, that's indeed solid advice! To link to different posts.

To me it's just part of the process of leaving a comment. I do it 100% of the time.

I did so too, but now I am starting to wonder whether it's a good or a bad thing

I personally don't see anything wrong with it at all. There's nothing rude about it. It's not even remotely spam. And it's not bad for SEO or anything like that or it wouldn't be asked of you. The only time I alter or change the link someone left is when they link to an article as opposed to their site. If there was any issue with it, Kyle and Carson would have brought it to our attention :)

It never occurred to me that it might not be a good thing. I always thought of leaving your link as something like leaving your business card. When someone leaves me theirs I'm happy to go have a look and see what they're doing. To each their own, I guess??? Will have a look at that vid though. :)

I thought so too, leave my card, but I started to doubt it if it's a good thing

I did it but just because I thought there was nothing wrong with it... I am talking about when you are asked to leave your name, email and website in the dedicated fields. I would never leave my website link within a comment box, that would mean spamming to me.
I have commented on about 15 websites so far and I have always left my website link in the dedicated field. It was relevant in just one case.
Have I potentially harmed my website reputation?
Thank you very much in advance for your replies.

Yes, I mean in the dedicated fields, I wonder myself, does this harm my website?
That's what this discussion is about.
Keep following this thread, and see what others have to say

No, I don't. I think it's spammy to do that without checking with the website owner first. I make lots of comments on blogs that have nothing to do with my niche. If the opportunity arose and it was appropriate, I might consider it. But, otherwise, no.

I mean to say, not IN the comment, but when you are commenting you are asked to leave your Name, Email address and Website. Do you add your website there?

No, not usually. Although I guess I could. LOL! Now I'm not sure what I should do.
