If at first you don't succeed.

Hi WA friends,

The reason why I started my website here is because I wanted to promote products from Udemy. I learned web development from their courses and found myself recommending them to people. And then the light bulb went on, and I thought, wouldn't it be great if I could get paid for recommending their courses, provided that people would buy them? That's when I decided to come back to WA and give this affiliate marketing business another try.

Because I love Udemy products, they were the first affiliate program I applied to. They were also the only merchant that rejected me. They said they usually don't approve new websites with "no traffic". I was really bummed and even considered switching up my business model, but I thought I'd try a personal appeal and sent them an email, adding the things that I couldn't include in my formal application. I told them that I was ready to turn myself into a Udemy poster child, having successfully learned the skills I needed through their courses to uplevel my career. I said how much I love their products and even though I've been approved by other vendors, my business wouldn't be the same without their partnership. I also mentioned that I have a substantial Quora following and could drive traffic to my website that way with a screen shot of my Google Analytics page. I gave it a try but didn't expect anything more, so imagine my surprise when I logged in this afternoon to discover that they approved my application! They said they were willing to make an exception because they could see my passion and potential.

So here is the takeaway I can offer: if you are not approved by a vendor that you really want to promote, you can either send a personal note to their affiliate email address or re-apply at a later date once you've generated more traffic. If you don't succeed at first, it can pay off to try again.

No matter where we are in building our businesses, we have successes and setbacks along the way. I knew that if it didn't work out, I could turn to the community here for advice, which is equally awesome.

I am determined to give this my best effort and make them happy that they approved my application. I am incredibly grateful that they're giving me a chance, so if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get back to work now :) Thank you to all of you who contribute to this supportive community. I remain grateful to you all.

Udemy looks worth investigating Laura!

Yes, I can speak very highly of their products. Many of the instructors make their living online, so they have a personal interest in seeing their students succeed. They know that in order to have satisfied repeat customers, they need to be responsive. This is one of the reasons I feel comfortable recommending many of their courses. They allow you to do deep linking through Link Share, so you can recommend any course you like. If you decide to investigate them and have any questions, I'm happy to help.
