In Jay's last wabinar he mentioned the importance of using email notifications sparingly. I only want to send emails to people in my circles for posts worthy of notifications. I

I'm not sure if this is part of the confusion, but notifications and email are two different things in Google+. For example, if someone is in my circle and I "share" something with that circle, they receive a notification, but not an email.

It's possible that they have changed their settings to receive an email every time they get a notification (it's turned off by default).

That being said, if I participate in a discussion, all participation after that I receive in my email inbox, instead of just that red notification square.

If you do not want to send notifications NOR emails, remove the circles before you share (they appear as a blue or green rectangle in your share box), and just make it 'public'.

Let me know if that clarifies things or just makes it more confusing! :)

Hi Nathaniell ~ thanks for clarifying that (I think) So the persons who received emails alerting them that I had changed my photo had their settings checked to receive emails for all new posts etc.? So maybe I was not spamming all my circles, just the poor folks who have not unchecked that box. G+ can be a bit confusing. I appreciate the help.
Still keeping up with your Chinese?

It's strange that some people seem to have this on by default, others have it off. Go to your Google+ profile, click the gear, then settings, and scroll down to find "Receive notifications". Most likely, it will have a check next to "Shares a post and they're in a circle I subscribe to". Have them uncheck this and any others they want to, and it should solve your (their) problem!

I'm slowly losing my Chinese! In fact, I don't even have the Google pinyin typing software installed on my new computer :)

Nathaniel, thanks very much for your help. I'll make sure they know about changing their setting. Would hate to spam someone unintentionally.
Try not to loose your Chinese. It's a very valuable asset.
