Relevant News Story Proves To Raise Your Rank On Google
I promote several products on my website and although my site hasn't received the traffic I'd like to see as a 8 month blog, I finally got some traction on this one product review post.
How it got some traction is because there was a news story about a competitor product that got shut down.
I blogged about it that very night but wished I would have done it in the morning instead.
I talked about how that competitor got shut down and that it wasn't a great product anyway and told people to go see the product that I recommend instead, which was way more powerful and can do so many more things.
So this "news related" post would link to my full product review post.
The next day the news related post gave me my highest number of sessions I've ever seen for my site. This was last month on April 21 and that post was only on page 2!
My traffic has continued to remain higher than before that news happening and I have started PPC to get even more traffic for it.
Now for my full product review post, it used to rank on Google for the product keyword low like on page 4 or 5.
Since then, even though it's not the main landing page (the news related post is), it's been moving up and up in ranking, as more and more people visit from the news related post.
The graph below shows it's been ranking high 30's to even mid 40's before April 21 to May 8 to position 8!
This is less than one month a page can go from page 5 to page 1 because I caught a very relevant news story and was able to blog right away about.
The news related post could have been on page 1 instead of 2 if I had just blogged about it in the morning when I heard the news instead of finishing my scheduled work for the day then did it late at night!
This is an eye opener for me and will not pass up another opportunity like this in the future.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the traffic even though it's on 2nd page... now I have PPC so it's on Page 1. ;)

I've been publishing 4 times/week since last week of Feb.
Wow that's alot! I'm on 82 at the moment but my sites a little younger then yours. Yeah I've started to post more, currently trying too get one a day done!

This particularly makes a lot of sense Grace, So we should be keeping our eyes and ears open for relevant news stories, time our posts just right, and tie them into our blog posts, right?

That's part of setting up Google Alerts but this news story didn't come from there as I haven't set up Google Alerts for this product (which I should now!), and was just in the know about it. But yes, keeping an eye out and ear open, will help you capitalize on hot news stories.

Way to go Grace, just imagine if there was a newsworthy item about WA. We all have ranked pages for WA, would we also get the same boost?

Well this particular news matter did well for me because that other product got shut down, so all those users for that product will have to find another to use, thus my recommendation of an alternative for these people that are left high and dry.
If Kyle and Carson just went on CBS to talk about making money online, I don't think it would have the same impact. WA would need to have something controversial happening to have any impact on bootcamp sites, I think.
That's true, maybe something about 'WA, the millionaire maker'.
