One Load At A Time

My father used to have a big truckload of wood delivered to the house for our wood stove that was our prime heat source. Every morning before going out to milk the cows, about 5:30 am, he would get the stove going to warm up the house for us when we got up. But first He would have to split the wood and then haul it to the house one load at a time.

That was a mountain of wood, and although he stacked it out in the stockyard, it ultimately had to be brought in to the house to burn it.

He decided it was going to have to be brought in anyway, and on cold snowy days it was nicer to not have to walk 100 feet through the back yard, past the shop and root cellar, past the shop’s garage another 30 feet to the woodpile to get it.

So he made a plan. He decided to start bringing the wood in, one load at a time. Every time he came in from feeding the animals, milking the cows, feeding the chickens, or irrigating the fields he would carry in an armful of wood.

Each load seemed like such a little amount, but ultimately every stick of wood from that original wood pile ended up stacked neatly beside the house, where he no longer had to brave the weather on those cold blustery mornings.

A person without a plan is like a boat without a rudder

Perhaps my father’s example could be a pattern for all of us to follow here at WA. Determine to do something each day. Yes, we won't arrive at our destination tomorrow, but moving continually forward, one small step each day we will eventually be successful.

We need to have made personal plans that will ultimately lead to our success.

Small steps we can make each day might be:

  • Don't get distracted
  • Get rid of all that spam email in your inbox
  • Avoid overwhelm, take a break, get up and clear your brain
  • Work on at least one part of the training modules each day
  • Try to thank and comment on people who follow you,
  • Find several people to follow each day.
  • Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t read everyone’s post
  • Learn daily from our WA community.

Let’s take each one of these points to realize why we should do them.

Don't get distracted

Set office hours, and only take business-related phone calls during office hour. Don’t let naysayers pull you off course.

Get rid of all that spam email in your inbox

Our email inbox is littered with email offers that are mostly spam and not worth wasting our time reading. They act as a diversion to us and take our time away from what is important – building our business.

Avoid overwhelm

Take frequent breaks, get up and clear your brain. Do some exercises. Ask questions to the WA community about things you need clarification on frequently.

Work on part of training each day

Even though it takes longer on some sections of the training than others, do a little each day on the training. Review sections that you have need of hearing again.Over and over again if needs be. Determine to do something each day. you won't get there tomorrow, but moving continually forward, one small step each day you will eventually start seeing success.

Find several people to follow each day

In WA we are being prepared for life on the big internet. We may get to wondering why we should take the time to follow people. Why should we "like" things people post? In my opinion, WA has a ranking which resembles Google ranking, and this is helping prepare us for our internet life after our website starts ranking on Google

Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t read everyone’s post

Read a few posts each day, but there aren’t enough hours in a day to read everything on the web. Pick and choose, but make sure you like and comment on some of them.

This is preparing us for the way Google, Bing, and Yahoo rank us. The more they see our site from comments and likes, the sooner they will recognize us as a bonafide website. The further up the ranking towards -0- the sooner we will appear on the top page of the search engines.

Learn daily from the WA community. Ask questions!

When you are stymied and can’t move forward, ask "why?" or "how do I?" when you don’t have an answer. Someone has been there before and will tell you the answer or help you find an answer.

In Review

To be successful at building a website affiliate program, we need a plan and then determine to stick to it.

Working on a small piece of the WA puzzle each day, even if it is a tiny piece, will lead us to our ultimate goal.

By continually doing a little each day you will succeed. Just like the farmer who had to bring in the woodpile, one load at a time, you will put your website puzzle together one piece at a time. Eventual success lies to all those who continue and don’t quit.

REMEMBER the whole WA community is cheering for you. YOU CAN DO THIS!

Great post Linda!
Your words resonate with me, I’ve been moving through the training like a herd of turtles, but I WILL finish, and I WILL build successful sites.
All the best,
KyleAnn

That is exactly how I feel. My plan is to stay in the race, no matter how long it takes me. We have found the community and the mentors, and now we just have to find the endurance it takes to survive the turbulence we will go through. Rough as it may be we will survive. Have a nice Memorial Day weekend.

Really great article!
Yes, the policy of small steps is the safest for me.

Have a great day!

I'm glad we agree. I have found that adopting the motto "Baby Steps" has freed me up from a lotta stress. I know my limitations and rather than be frustrated because of not being able to keep up with everyone, I just say "Baby steps, Linda" and I'm fine. Hope you have a great Memorial Day weekend. Linda

Very inspirational. Thank you for sharing memories about your dad who sounds like he was amazing!
Have a great weekend.

Yes, he was an amazing father. He practiced what he preached and never "stepped out of line." A very good example to follow!

Linda, your article was so inspiring. I think the message is to do a little, bit often. Instead of waiting and doing a lot at longer intervals.

Thanks for sharing.

Edwin

Yes, that would be a good assessment. I often suggest that approach to my piano students for practicing the piano too. I wonder where I learned that? Thank you for reading my article and for your kind words. To hear that from you gives me the courage to move forward faster. I have many stories I have already written about, just not published. Onward and upward! Linda

Wonderful post Linda!

Thanks for your thoughts.

Welcome Linda!

Great post, great tips. Love the "one load at a time" story. Little by little we will get there. I find that breaking out my month's tasks on Trello and prioritizing them helps me a lot.

Cheers,

Michael

I thought I responded to this because I planned to check out Trello. I did check it out and may give it a try someday. I am focusing on my website for now, however, and will not spare the time to learn a new program. Thanks for your comment. Have a great weekend

Hi Linda,
This is a lovely post, it was so nice to read about your childhood memories of your father, working so hard, chopping the wood in the wee hours of the morning so that everything would be nice and cozy and warm when you and your family got up every day. His bringing the wood next to the house in small arm loads, a little bit at a time, until the mountain of wood was moved: wonderful metaphor! Reminds me of the Japanese way of business/life: KAIZEN, making small improvements, every day, leads to huge changes over time.

Your post really reminds me that for so many of us, the work we are doing on our websites is work that we do out of love for our families & loved ones, building something little by little, often when everyone else is sleeping, so that things will be nice and cozy when the fruits of our efforts begin to flow.

Also, great specific pointers to help us avoid distractions and stay on course!
Looking forward to your next post!
Kate

Thanks for the kind words. I loved your reference to the real "why" that we build our websites :"out of love for our families & loved ones, building something little by little, often when everyone else is sleeping."

Hi Linda
One load at time. Just make sure that every step you take leads you to success.
Thanks

Absolutely! It's all the small steps that get us that much closer to our goal.
