Help with Site comments Please.

I hesitate to add to the many site comments posts of late but....

I am in a quandary!

I have a site comment to approve or not. The trouble is it doesn't really make sense.

BUT is it because of the lack of knowledge of the English language OR because it has been done in a hurry and/or without care?

I don't want to discourage someone if they have tried their best but on the other hand Google drops ranking for poor comments even if the post is good.

Any advice?

THANK YOU so much for the help. I really appreciate it and with your assistance not only learnt something new but sorted it out without harm to feelings.

I had one refused and I was only trying to help. It really put me off doing comments as I don't want to lose access. It also stated that I had to write two paragraphs and I tend to be more precise and brief. Very off putting. I also had the impression that if I didn't say wow this is a great post, they weren't interested. So why ask for a comment?

It's nice that you care enough not to reject them and that Glen suggested a better way to delete it.

Lily 😊

Seems a bit over fussy of the person you wrote a comment for. If they ask for site comments though they have to understand that not all will agree with their point of view.

I had one refused when I first started but had no idea why. I did find it very off putting. I just did more research on what is expected and moved on. It does make me think twice before rejecting.
Yes there are some that are trying to milk the system but most are genuine and deserve help rather than hindrance.

Even if it's because of lack of knowledge of the English language, definitely reject it. Do not worry about people's feelings in Site Comments. If they don't understand enough English to read your post or respond in a manner that makes sense, meaning they likely didn't understand your post at all, then they should have skipped your site. Anyone who's English cannot be understood well enough shouldn't be trying to get credits with Site Comments like this. It doesn't matter if they're trying to game the system or not.

Comments on your site should make sense and be relevant. That's all. You don't need specific or great comments, but it should at least make sense. Otherwise, people will wonder what the heck.

This is your site, don't worry about their feelings. It's business, not personal.

And I'm not being mean, but if your site is in English, why would someone from another country with almost no English be commenting on your post? See what I mean? I know it sounds harsh and I am usually pretty lenient on weird phrasing for non-English speakers, but they need to make sense.

It did seem a little harsh until you put it like that. I do agree,
I wouldn't be adding comments to a site in a language I didn't understand.
Thank you Rochelle, that's very helpful.

I did realize I was a little blunt at first. Which is not what I meant to sound. I do accept people's comments when their first language is clearly not English and will edit a word or spelling here or there. I'm not even picky. As long as the comment is REAL, I honestly don't care. I don't need specific things said on my site. But this is business and we can't be accepting random weird comments that don't make sense just because we feel bad about rejecting people.

That isn't the point of Site Comments. It's to help our website. Comments that don't make sense or are spam comments will HURT our site. Don't accept them. Mediocre comments that make sense even if it's not what I wanted? I still accept those. Not all comments have to be great. But make sense and relevant, yes.

I refuse to hurt my site just to make some random stranger not have a rejection. I am not rewriting comments from people, either. That's just unethical. I'll edit for spelling, but not rewrite them.

I have nothing against non-English speakers, but WA is in English, the Site Comments platform only allows English websites, etc. because it's based in Canada. They do allow people worldwide on this platform, which is awesome, but it's primarily an English-language business and opportunity.

That means if they can't make themselves understood, they should be sticking to just building a website in their native language and avoid the areas of WA that require extensive knowledge of English to participate. You can translate the lessons to their language, but to go about speaking in that language for anything but practice on the Blogs which hurts no one?

I mean, would YOU go and join a French site to learn internet marketing when you barely understand anything? I wouldn't. If I did because I didn't have another choice, I wouldn't be trying to do much communicating in the French part of the site. I'd get the lessons translated to my native language, I'd use the hosting (maybe), but I'd leave the rest alone.

I agree that comments that don't make any sense or spammy ones should be refused.
I too feel rewriting a comment would be unethical. I added punctuation to the one in question, then it did make sense.
I also agree that I wouldn't join a French or any other site not in my language, it would not make sense.
Thank you for clarifying, though I did understand what you meant.
I do want my business to work and do not want anything that will hurt it.

I am with Andy on this one. Better safe than sorry when it comes to keeping Google happy,

Thank you very much Mark.

it depends of your niche... Some comments just do not fit...
I am reluctant just like you...unless the cheating is obvious

I kept reading it over and over, then added comma's and the odd word ie: so & and, so it made sense.
I didn;t even know you could do that until this post Fleeky. You live and learn.

Yes... hard decision, but some jump on comments and mke a mess of it

Yes, too eager I suppose.
I read it first, then again and if I can't think of a reasonable amount to say about it, I don't bother.

If you can decern intent you can correct things like spelling and grammar, that's why we have the edit button. I had a couple this past week I had to fix.

Thank you Andy. I actually had no idea you could do that until it was mentioned here. It made me go back and add comma's and the odd word so it made sense.

I get these all the time, Linda.

My process is to PM the commenter outlining the issues I have with their comment.

Then, I give them a link to Kyle's training on SiteComments - and allow them a few days to edit the comment.

If they do not respond - which happens sometimes - especially with "English as a second language" folks - I am left with a choice to edit it myself or disapprove.

If I can't even understand what the heck they're talking about - or, if they don't respond to my PM at all, I assume they don't care and, at that time, I disapprove the comment using the same reasons I gave them in the PM.

Jim

I totally agree with you. I think you've offered the right answer. Thanks.

Thanks, Akoli, for the consensus!

Jim

Excellent approach Jim - I'll remember that as well, thanks

I like that way of going about it Bob.

Thanks, for the support, John!

Jim

I hope many more folks will use this same approach, too, Paula!

Jim

Thank you for the excellent advice Bob, it is greatly appreciated.

Thank you Akoli.

My pleasure, Linda.

I am inclined to let the poster know your opinion. Perhaps is is a language problem, but maybe not. This may be an opportuity to help another memberr.

Thank you for the advice David, much appreciated.

Edit it, if there is enough there to still carry the sentiment of the author. I've edited a few but only for typo's and the like.

I've done that too.

I didn't know you could edit it. I thought that once it was written that was it.

Yes indeedly. Happy days.

Thank you for that, something else I have learn't.

You're welcome, I am finding that the list is long and seems to have no end.

Of the things I don't know? You are absolutely correct.
The more I learn, the more I discover that I need to learn.

I was referring to me with the long list. This has been amplified, of late, when I started to try and understand cryptocurrencies and blockchains...did shed a tear or two.

Oh my goodness.. blockchains & cryptocurrencies .... it's enough to learn this at the moment.
I will think about that later.

Oh, that IS tough Linda. If i understand correctly, someone has commented on your site post, but you're not exactly sure what their advice or critical comment actually means or what to do about it because it doesn't seem to make sense for your post?

Exactly John. But I don't want to put someone off if they are new or if its just that they don't understand the language very well..

Right, I agree. Could be as simple as a language barrier with no intent of offending. I liked Jim's approach - you probably saw that. Seems like the best way to offer an opportunity to the person to clarify and revise and if they don't respond then just go ahead and amend it yourself to try to make sense of it.

In the time it took you to write this, you could have simply re-wrote the comment and been satisfied. Just saying...

I have just discovered that, thank you Eric. Although, is it ethical to change someone's comment?

It's on your website so it's your property. It would be a different story were it a testimonial or something else that is more important.

Thank you Eric. I did add comma's and it made much more sense then.
