As you said, each page could have a different conversion rate, but the promotional method and the traffic source itself is also equally important.
You should try to focus on organic traffic to get really interested visitors. There are many other ways to generate traffic to your landing pages, but the conversion rate will be very low if the targeted audience isn't really interested in platforms like WA.
My Post is a 'how to' explaining how to set up your own Blog. The button then takes the visitor to WA.
My personal issue is the WA landing page itself looks rather un-enticing
You are saying that WA landing page itself looks rather un-enticing ... Than how is posible for all those WA superstars to enroll hundreds of people each month?
Just saying I felt it looked better pre update due to better use of colour above the fold and the live looking ticker
Have you tried creating ads with facebook or instagram that lead directly to your landing pages? Or setup a pinterest account just for your blog and create colorful pins showing an image of your ad? Don't underestimate the power of a social media presence. Build a Following and then you can sign them up to whatever you want. Offer them free content in that area as soon as they get to your site. Most people have a problem that needs to be solved. If you can help them do that, then you can build a following.

I cannot give you the exact "magic bullet' that you need to achieve success.
I can, however, make this suggestion.
Go back to the training.
Go back to lesson 1, perhaps there is something that you are not doing quite right.
I frequently return to a lesson or class that I do not fully understand.
Your request is also very general and the training will make your request more specific.
You may even be able to answer your own question.
