Hello WA family,

we have come through the worst year that I can remember in my lifetime, 2020 is gone and now is the time to look at, where we are at and make goals for the days a head.

I was only three years old when japan bombed pearl harbor, I remember all the talk of the late 40s about the war and the events that went on.

In 1951, I was signed up for a social security card, we where taught that working and making you way was the way to go.

My first adventure was raising bantam chicks and selling them from the farm.

The second thing was signing up to sell grit news papers. I would request 30 copies . I was given a shoulder bag that had grit news printed on it.

At that time my dad was working in a sheet metal shop, I would get up early on Saturday's and go in to town with him and I would hit the streets and sell my grit news papers and try to be done by noon.

After I sold all my papers, I would take the cost of the papers and put it in an envelope and send it in to the company and the rest was profit. My earnings for the day.

Take time for your self

Lunchtime has arrived, our usual was a bologna and cheese sandwich, my dad would go next door to a grocery store and purchase the bologna and cheese and a loaf of bread and a couple of R C cola, that was lunch.

Enjoying the evening

My dad worked till 5.00pm and I had three to four hours to kill till time to go home. I was on my own,

we had four movie theaters in our town, all of them had afternoon matinees of western movie's so I had my choice of what to see, that is the way I spend my Saturdays.

As we continue down memory lane,

In 1954 I was in ninth grade and I had a job at a bowling alley setting pins at night, I would get out of school and hitchhike five miles to town and work till they closed, the owner of the alley would take me home which was really appreciated.

The way to make money on any job is your production, I would get 10 cents a line so I figure out the more lines, more money.

I requested to set three alleys at a time, that way I made three time the money, worked out good.

One day that I won't forget is a good memory of a ride to town.

As I was standing beside the highway trying to catch a ride to town, a 1954 green ford came to a stop and invited me to ride with them to town, as we took off and headed down the road, he introduced his self, when he said "I am Hank Thompson the country music singer" he was on the way to preform that night at the VFW hall in town where they had dances every Friday night. That was an enjoyable 5-mile trip and enjoyed the conversation

From there I went on and got my drivers license and started driving a part's delivery truck and worked up to counter man and finished out my school years working there.

When I graduated I went to work in a dealership in part's department which lasted for 50 years,

good life

Thank you Leroy,

A great post.
As an old guy myself, I like looking back at my life & others too.

I was only three weeks old when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour.
As an Aussie, my father served in New Guinea, so I did not see him very much.
Growing up I assisted the milk man with his horse & cart, very early in the morning. I filled the billycan with milk & delivered to the homes each day. This was long before milk was in bottles.

It is great to reminisce - LOL

I have covered many a miles in my life, i love to tell of the good memories and hoping it some enjoyment to the people that reads it, thank you for your comment. best wishes

Life was really different then, manners hard work and be grateful for the little we got, that is how I was raised then. We are from the same world but different country.

The goats, pigs, donkey, cows, horses and all the four legged animals you can think of was in my surrounding.

Thinking back then, it was a good life. Sorry Leroy, I get carried away for a moment, especially seeing your Coco-Cola bottle. :) thanks for sharing. Elizabeth
