This is My Declaration of Independence and Freedom Speech!

You often hear the phrase "Freedom doesn't come free..." fly off the lips of many patriotic folks. Seeing that this weekend marks my country's 239th year of Independence as a sovereign nation, I felt compelled to go all out and establish somewhat of my own Declaration of Independence Freedom Principles!

What is the Definition of Freedom? Independence? Let's start with the basics...

The dictionary definition of "freedom":

noun

  1. the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint."we do have some freedom of choice"
    • absence of subjection to foreign domination or despotic government."he was a champion of Irish freedom"
    • the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved."the shark thrashed its way to freedom"

and "independence":

noun

1. the fact or state of being independent

OK, so maybe we need to go a little deeper...

"independent"

adjective

  1. free from outside control; not depending on another's authority. "the study is totally independent of central government"
  2. not depending on another for livelihood or subsistence. "I wanted to remain independent in old age"

noun

  1. an independent body or person

As you can see from the textbook definitions they are somewhat synonymous with each other to some extent. Both terms represent a separation from outside control, an absence of authority overhead and a sense of being able to do as we want, say what we want...when we want.

The same goes for running your own business!

You have the freedom to:

  • Decide what you want to do every day
  • Set your own hours
  • Say what you want to say
  • Do what you want to do

You are an independent because:

  • You don't have a boss
  • You make the rules
  • You don't rely on corporate income
  • You get to be yourself

Ten years ago in my own history, this day (July 4th) marked an important day for me. I won't get into all the details, but I was freed from several things that were not conducive to a happy life. I considered it my own personal "Independence Day". This year I intend on celebrating that freedom once again, along with the freedom I enjoy from tyranny and oppression.

But this year is a little different. I have the opportunity to declare my independence and freedom in a new light, with newly established principles that were not involved before. This year I am declaring my freedom from two NEW things in my life:

  • Freedom from the rat race of running a brick & mortar business
  • Freedom from smoking cigarettes (I have declared it so... this time it stops!)

It may not look like much on the surface, but they are chains that need to be broken in order for me to move forward in life and to achieve the financial freedom and independence that all of us here at WA are working toward. The road is certainly not paved with gold, and these "freedoms will NOT come free" by any means, but to declare them as a goal is a pretty good start. The first of two is complete, the second has less than a day to be enacted as law! :)

During this 4th of July, if you're American, don't forget where your freedom came from. Enjoy what is granted to you by living in this country and also don't forget those that died to secure it.

But also reflect on the freedom and independence you have the ability to secure here at WA by creating your own source of income, while all the while being able to make each and every day what you want it to be, say what you want to say and be who you want to be!

I'll be looking for your own personal "Declaration of Independence and Freedom Speech" somewhere down the road. Perhaps it will be here or in a blog post or a video or even somewhere on TV or the news! Can't wait to see it!

Happy 4th of July to all my American friends...Happy Independence Day to ALL!

I am late reading your blog, but your words are well taken and as I was reading all I could think of was the FREEDOM we are hoping to get here at WA ....but also remembering those that fought to bring us the freedom that we have today. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your freedom from smoking!!!!!

I've gotten away from the real ones as of July 4th! I've been using a vapor cig for a few days now, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Happy Independence Day to you too.

Thanks!

Happy 4th! And congratulations on your newest freedoms!

Thanks David! Right back atcha!

Happy Fourth of July to you too, Leland. Enjoy your Freedom and Independence. There are millions in this world that don't have what we have.

You've got that right Larry! Enjoy the holiday!

Happy 4th Leland !!!!!!!

Thanks G! Same to you!

:-)

I am still working on the same two goals. I still have a brick&mortar; and I still smoke. One day soon they will stop. :)

We closed our shop June 30th after selling it back to our future son-in-law...but the smoking...THAT's the tough one! Just keep tryin'...this will be my 100th or so attempt after doing so for some 30+ years with a few breaks in between!

Great article. Freedom? Hmmmmmm! Makes me wonder sometime. Happy 4th Leland and All.

I hear what you're sayin' db!

Very well stated Leland, you are a true leader and an inspiration to
our WA family.

Thanks Larry, your comment is much appreciated! I am determined to do so not only with words, but also by example.

As a Canadian friend I wish you an enjoyable 4th of July. And may you have success in achieving your goals of independence from the items you find oppressive.

Thanks so much friend! I also hope that my neighbors from the north enjoyed the celebrations marking their 148th year of Independence back on July 1st!

May freedom ring!
