If you are operating a website for a local business then yes, of course the mx extension would be acceptable... PLUS you would need your website to be hosted locally too. This way Google will know to offer your local business to local searchers.
However, if you are creating an affiliate website... and, if it is hosted here at WA, then your site is located on the best servers, in the best country, and it has the smartest extension (dot com) making it easier for you to find customers world wide if that is your wish.
