What I am going to blog about may not sound like a business post, but I assure you it will evolve into one. My life is your gain will give you strength and knowledge. So please keep reading to the end.

House For Sale

My husband and I placed our house on the market to sell last September 2018. That would be eight months ago. Homes in our area sell within three months because of the well sought after school district.

I retired September 6, and my husband was finishing a contract with his work that ended in November. So we both knew our house would sell quickly. I packed practically everything in the house and stored it in the garage.

All winter long we waited and waited and waited. Almost nothing happened. Then one day in March our realtor who is a close friend of ours called me crying. My first thought was "oh no what happened."

Our Friend

She said to me, "I had to get down on my knees to pray this morning. I didn't want you to move because you have always been here for me, so I have not tryed to sell your house."

I was dumbfounded. By now our house was on the market for seven months. So in May of this year, we changed realtors. By this time people were afraid to put a contract on our house because "there must be something wrong with it or it would have already sold."

How does this link to WA and business?

First of all, I wanted to give up. I saw no way out of this situation. We were hosed and no turning back.

But I have a very supportive husband who just kept saying we will keep going and we did.

I trusted my friend and found out she was in this for herself and not for all of us concerned.

Honesty To Help Others

When you have an affiliate marketing business or any type of business, you have to run it with honesty. Your business is not about you. It is about your reader. You have a business to serve others and want to build trust.

So first put you on the back burner and decide how you will help someone else. Make it all about solving a problem that someone else has. Amazing things happen when you set out to help instead of getting what you want.

You will find your work more relaxed because you will not focus on how much you have to do. You will not begrudgingly attempt to write so you can make money. You will, however, look for ways to put content out to the world because you know they need what you have.

I got off track just a tiny bit. So back to the beginning.

Do Not!

Here are just a few DON'TS to apply to your business for success.

1. Don't put a time frame on your expectations. You have no control over the outside world and who will want to see your help. Do choose your keywords and get ranked well so your assistance will be at the top when the world does come to you.

2. Don't put all of your trust in one person to take care of everything for you. Your own your business and you are responsible for your work. Trust your instincts to know when all is good, and all is not.

3. Don't look at the surface. No matter what it looks like on the outside, there is always a better way to do things. Test out your posts, find the ones that do well, and write more along those lines. Trial and error will produce results.

4. Don't continue on with a bad decision. If you chose the wrong niche and you need to abort then cut your losses and make things happen in a niche that you can help others. Your choices can set your destiny, but you can change the decisions or correct them at any time you like.

5. Don't hold a grudge.Always forgive for you are not in control of your life. Forgiveness is for your heart and not for the other person.

We now have a contract on our house and will be moving on August 21, 2019. How sweet it is!

The moral to this story is: Never give up, always help others, don't set a time frame on your success, change is not giving up it is rerouting you destiny and forgiveness is the real answer to moving forward.

I worked in large car dealerships for 30 years.
I now do not like salespeople.
They sell what the want to sell, not what the customer needs or wants.
Now that I am retired and on the internet, I do not want to sell anything.
I am here trying to help anyone to buy what they want and need.
I find a lot of satisfaction in helping others with their needs whether I get a commission or not.
I call it teamwork that comes up with a quality result.
Tom.

Tom, I love it. I have an inspiration site that makes no money but I am so happy to write on it to help others when they need it. One day I will monetize it when I have time but for now, I am happy with it the way it is.

Laura

I agree. I need to earn money but find I am helping more than trying to earn.
“Always take the time to Live your life while you are earning your living.” Tom Short.

Great words of wisdom.

Laura

Great post Laura.
Sad to hear about your friend doing that.
Being selfish is not a way forward in life, now you are moving and she missed a sale.

Even though we have no control on the outside world, by being a beautiful person you will attract great things....and even though your friend dd this, there will be a reason why it happened the way it did....a hidden gem

Daisy

Daisy, I so agree with you. We may not see the hidden gem but the effects will be there.

Laura

Some great advice and perspective here. So glad it all worked out. :)

Thank you, we are also.

Laura

I am glad you managed to sell your house. It does show we have to be careful and keep an eye on everything even if we put it in the hands of trusted friends.

Derek

Thank you and yes you are right. The same with our online business we have to keep an eye on all.

Laura

Wow, I was an Estate Agent for a few years and I am surprised your 'friend' did that, as in the end it was her business and reputation on the line. Another famous saying comes to mind 'Never mix business and pleasure'

Yes the moral is act with integrity and honesty no matter how you want it to pan out.

I have worked in many sales environments, where it was all about 'making the sale' (or not in your case) no matter what, which is why I left.

I prefer help and advice instead of selling. Sits much more comfortably with my moral and inner compass.

I am so pleased you finally found out the truth, and were able to sell your house! and thank you Laura for sharing your story and advice : )

I know Sara, For the past 3 months I tried to overlook what happened. But today I found out the new realtor has to pay her 25% referral fee. We wanted to contact the new person ourselves but she insisted she "wanted to help."

One never knows who people really are. But from what I have learned I want to be honest with integrity. It only helps to solidify this when I meet someone who is not.

Laura

We learn the lessons from these experiences xx

I actually love the lessons I learn. At the time maybe not but I do enjoy applying them to life lessons.

Laura

Don't you find at the time, these things are so painful or tough, but it is these things that we tell as stories, or laugh about in the future, or as you say, learn the most from!

Great post. Glad you sold your house.

thank you, Linda,

Laura

Thank you for this post.

Helping others is the corner stone of any worthwhile business. It is only through identifying a need and finding solutions that fill that need can we have a business in the first place.

Wishing you well and hoping that you do eventually sell your house.

Gaz

Gaz, absolutely 100% correct. Thank you.

Laura

Great post, Laura. That's sage advice and example of solid, logical thinking there. The curriculum at the School of Hard Knocks is a tough one but the longer you study, the easier it gets.

I read where a wise teacher was asked how was it that they were able to make such wise decisions. The answer was, "by making a lot of unwise decisions". That about sums it up.

That's what I love about WA. It's a path paved with hard-earned practical experience and people sharing with no expectation of personal gain.

Wonderful comment. Your comments are always valuable and appreciated.

Laura

You said a mouthful of true wisdom in 3 sentences

Laura, I'm glad things are working out for you finally.

That would have sent my blood pressure through the roof!

There are many things that WILL work against us so yes reduce or eliminate expectations. Find a way to accept what is. I've been thinking a lot about this lately as I see how others are being negatively impacted by forces outside their control and often with little recourse to correct the situation.

Blessings!

Mel

We will always have negative things to impact our life and our business. It is how we choose to look at them that will determine the outcome.

Laura

I'm happy and relieved for you, Laura!

Indeed, there are larger lessons to be learned from this experience ... thank you for distilling them for us into that glass!

Laurie, Yes, there are always more significant lessons to learn from every walk of life. Thank you for always reading my posts. You are wonderful.
