5 Simple Steps to Making Your Content More Mobile Friendly

Here I'm going to show you how to make your website faster and more mobile friendly. These 5 simple points that I'm covering here are usually the culprits to slow loading pages and possiblely your website not loading at all.

  • 1. Before you publish any post make sure you preview it.

To do this check my last training https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/the-quick... or another way of previewing is to drag the page you're working on onto a separate window.

To do this you literally drag the tab down and let go, it automatically puts it onto another window. From here, click on the minimize and maximize button top right, then move the window around with your mouse to check the different sizes.

It is fairly accurate, but of course no sizes are given and your theme must be responsive for it to work.

This image below is my site showing you my article in the new window with it's size reduced - looks pretty good to me!

  • 2. Responsive themes

Having a responsive design could create more traffic to your site, rankings will not decrease, and it will improve your SEO. All this can only be a very good thing! So, if you aren't using a responsive theme, then now is the time to change it because Google will love your more for it.

Check the image below for mobile vs non-mobile viewing to see the difference.

  • 3. Always use images that are optimized

What I mean by that is never upload an image that is too big for your needs because it will slow down your website. If all you need is 400x400, then don't use 1000x1000.

  • 4. Reducing image pixel sizes

Before uploading an image you need to reduce the pixel size by using tinyjpg.com, this covers png files also. Tinyjpg can significantly reduce your pixels, which means a faster website and much better mobile viewing. For example, some images can be as much 400px, but after running it through tingjpg it can reduce the size by more than half sometimes.

My daughter once uploaded a 2Mb image for her website background, it took her a while to realize that it was the huge image preventing her site from actually loading. Once she reduced its size, her site was back on track.

  • 5. Possible problems with image alignments

When loading images particularly be more cautious with right and left aligned images that are wrapped around text. These left and right aligned images can sometimes look tacky in mobile viewing where you might end up with one word hanging - see image below.

To overcome this you can use a plugin that offers 1/2 and 1/2 alignments, I use Thrive Content Builder but I'm sure there's free shortcode plugins in your repository. Or, another way to deal with this is to center align your images.

Okay I hope you've enjoyed that and I hope you have a great day. Let me know what you think and if you've got any more tips please share them below.

Hi Sharon, please could you list some responsive themes for us to try out. I am definitely having issues viewing my one site on my mobile.

to find responsive themes go to your theme's, then add new use the filter to find the type of theme you want, theme's such as twenty sixteen,

If you head over to my bloggers refuge site they are listed there http://bloggersrefuge.com/top-free-wordpress-themes, these are the best I've come across to be honest.

Thanks Sharon. Bookmarked. Appreciate.

I enjoy your information thank you for sharing. I am wanting to succeed at online business it is just talking me a while to get it all down :)

It takes time, but you'll get there, :)

Thank you, seems to be the way things are going. I should become more aware.

This is really great as a good reminder for everybody about the importance of being mobile frienly - thank you for the share

Very important issue to take care of, thanks for sharing

Google Analytics tells me more than 80% of people view my website on a mobile device - which surprised me. It has me thinking about my site which I feel is not very mobile savvy. I'll look at your ideas and try and incorporate more.
Thanks for raining the issue.

It's good to know and at least now you know what to do ;)

As more and more people gain access to the web via mobile phones this is going to become even more important. Thanks Sharon.

I wonder what the statistics are, I think I'll Google it :)

An excellent read Sharon, I'm going to go through all those points one by one :-)

Very good tips that can easily be overlooked so Thanks for Sharing.

Not used it but heard a great deal about using Yoast SEO Plugin. Which is supposed to optimize your pages content, images titles, meta descriptions and much more.

Although this blog is more on mobile viewing not SEO, yes you are right Yoast is very good, I prefer it above the All-in-one that WA recommend. Strangely I have no idea why it's not recommended here lol

Didn't mean go off on a different path but again thanks for the Tips. Mobile used to be a forgotten area where I used to work and customers would email about our site not being Mobile friendly.

Nice blog thank you, Lady :) I keep forgetting about mobile when comes to my website. 2016 will be another year where more people surf the web through the phone.

I'll make sure to concentrate on mobile devices as well from now one.

yeah I agree.
