Back from Paradise

A working week has just ended for me. Sadly, I had to spend it in paradise.

We are still working on rehabbing a house on Hilton Head Island. It is just soooo hard to take. I know, I know. Too bad for me.

This week I dug a hole. Yup, it seems that one of the trees that was removed resprouted. The problem was that this tree root (the root was all that was left) was nestled up against the foundation of the house. Since it was so close to the foundation, it had to be removed manually. In February when we were down there, I dug out half of the root so the dirt was fairly soft but still, with the rains and humidity (jungle like humidity) the left over root began to send up shoots.

I'm hoping that removing the rest of the root is sufficient to keep it from returning, there are still a few pieces of the tree left in the ground. These are actually under the foundation of the house and parts of them were discovered by the contractor when he was redirecting the drain lines in one of the bathrooms. This was a very invasive tree.

The remainder of the week was spent wandering on the beach collecting shells and enjoying the company of my new companion and my brother and his wife. They took the opportunity of a long weekend to drive up from Florida and meet us where the weather was cooler. Hard to believe that 85 degrees was cooler but the summer Florida heat has begun.

I know, hard to take.

I see niches everywhere. The vacation season opens in Hilton Head with the Memorial Day weekend. Now through Labor day over 300,000 people will visit the island all looking for a good time at the beach and perusing the Island's many stores and restaurants. I spent a good amount of time observing the business websites. There is a full time job for an army of SEO minded folks just bringing these sites up to speed.

That doesn't even include the new websites needed for the support people that maintain the island and the other businesses that haven't even joined the digital age. Many businesses still rely on word of mouth to advertise their wares. I hope they survive in this day of digital marketing. So far they have but many are waking up to the reality that without a web presence their businesses will eventually fail.

Thanks for sharing Craig. It sounds like really hard work. Hopefully you can relax for a bit:)

glad to have you back, no wabinars without you!! what about the drain tile outside the house?

Still need to work on redirecting the water a bit more.

Good luck with those roots!

Craig some photos would be great.

Well, I have many photos. Sorting through them is a bit of a challenge.

Like the one you put in. In some areas here people actually build their house incorporating the surrounding trees. As this is in areas where houses are usually built on stumps or piers foundation problems don't usually occur.

Awesome post Craig that was an excellent break do many new ideas for you and some ideas for us as well.
Not sure if you are into sprays but if you have problems with invasive trees returning make a fresh cut at the stump and using a 50/50 round up/water mix around the edge of the stump about 6 inches in works a treat.

Roundup is too toxic to use that close to tidal waters.

You are right just a thought.

I actually stab the stump and put a bit of concentrated Roundup in it. Our soil is pretty good so the organisms in it help break down the Roundup and the soil particles bond to it. As my main culprit is hops and they are in my garden, I have never noticed any surrounding plants suffering Roundup attack.

Roundup is just sooooo toxic. The activity ceases after a short time but the residual stays around for years.

I would not have it anywhere near anything that may possibly go in my mouth.

Awesome post Craig

Thanks for this great post Craig.

Yes, I see niches everywhere now too. It sounds like you could certainly get some local business if you wanted it!
