I have two grown children and Three Granddaughters. I have recently relocated to TN but grew up in Western NY.

I'm down to 2 Labrador Retrievers (Left to Right, Gracie and Elphaba)and am a dog trainer in my spare time. I was a member of a local Search and Rescue team and was training one of my Labs for this endeavor (Far Left). She is progressing well. The of the other is certified Therapy Dog, I have taught puppy obedience classes at night.

I spent 2010 on the unemployment rolls and found this place while out of work. I was able to dig out of my hole and found WA to provide some additional income.

I have now been at WA for 7 years. I have learned many things about how to build sites and have developed many sites for clients. Affiliate income is slow for me but only because I have been helping businesses directly. I may focus a bit more on affiliate marketing in the near future.

Over the years I have raised Monarch butterflies and released them back to the wild.Since I have come to WA I have raised several crops of butterflies. The Butterflies were tagged and released in August and September 2010 and 2011 and another crop in 2012. I collected them from the area raised them to Chrysalis stage and when they hatched I tagged them and sent them on their way. I tagged and released 20 Butterflies in 2010 and 19 in 2011 since I ran out of tags, this year I only released untagged Butterflies but 19 more were release to the wild.

Again in 2014 I had a bumper year for the Monarchs. Over 60 made it to the wilds as adults. 2015 was also a good year. Sadly, there were no butterflies in 2016. 2017 will be a different year for me as I'm no longer in Western NY. In TN the monarchs arrive early and are still in their northward journey so I won't be able to raise the Methusela generation that migrates back to Mexico in the fall. I'll still be planting Milkweed and developing a Monarch garden but the Monarch project has probably come to an end for me.

Howdy Craig. Great to meet you. Thanks for the follow. I've returned the favor.

You have a lot going on, for sure! Being a dog trainer seems like it would be pretty cool. We have a dog that seriously needs some training (she's a chihuahua/feist/dachshund mix). Being a dog trainer isn't for everyone. Kudos on that!

Oh, and I love Flutterbies (what my mom called butterflies. LOL).

WOW WOW WOW you and I have a LOT in common!.
I also tag and release Monarchs and have 3 Labradors (Waterfowl Retrieving is their thing, which I train them to do).
I love meeting like-minded people and seeing others save the Monarchs, but sad about your move, however good on you for still planting for them.
I have just finished a dog training and psychology certificate and am currently working on Dog Grooming certification to start my own business.
Great to meet you

Hi! Thanks for the follow. I too am a dog lover AND a butterfly lover. In fact, my niche is all about dogs. I just joined WA. I am excited about the training and the potential. I want to help inform people about various dog breeds and behaviors. I am also passionate about how people treat dogs. I've seen some things over the years that made my heart ache. Maybe enough people will fall upon my posts and change their way of thinking.

I'd love to brainstorm with you sometime and hear about your experiences and what you do as a trainer.

Blessings,

It took me two weeks to upgrade to premium. I am so appreciative of the honesty I have found here at WA. I am in it for the long hall because of what it will do for my family’s quality of life. Oh the butterflies sound lovely. I actually read an article a while back about why certain pollinators are so low in numbers. Fascinating.

Hey Labman
Thanks for following me, what an interesting mix of pets! We have 3 dogs between my wife and one of my daughters who lives next door including an ageing lab who has had problems with her hips. They told us she would be lucky to live to 6 or 7, she is now about 12:)
I understand the unemployment, I still have a job but have been off work for a year and am still waiting for spine fusion surgery. It made me realise that I have to do something for the future and right now besides lots of exercise and stretching, I have time.
All the best

Butterflies is what I called something very good and enchanting and can bring joy and sometimes more income into a business person life-style. Country living is great! because in it you may have the whole World to yourself all along with all of the grass and all of the animals, that we all called friends.

Hi & thanks for the follow! I am excited to have you in my circle & can't wait to dig into your posts. I'm sure they are full of a wealth of valuable knowledge from your time & experience here.

On a side note, my next door neighbor raises painted ladies & actually had some monarchs last year. Each year, she has a mesh tent party where all of the neighborhood kids can go in & allow the butterflies to land on them & get photos before she officially releases them. It's pretty amazing. So beautiful. But those guys are HUNGRY when they are growing!

Here's to our success with WA! :)

I love the bio. I have a Chocolate Lab and a rescue Greyhound also. I've noticed whilst out walking there is a real reduction in butterflies and insects here in Scotland in recent years, possibly due to pesticides etc (but I'm unsure). Thanks for the connection and I've followed you back.

Hello Labman. You are an exciting man with a love for nature. Iv'e read your post and also your profile. You have a distinct taste for the wild as well. What's next?

Look to me like you are thinking about a bees rearing farm,an animal rescue business, or a fresh organically grow nvegetable farm foods as well as animarearingl. You seem to have a strong love for mother nature.

I thought those hight of pine trees grow only in Georgia.I had a couple at the back of my house there in Georgia. I could see some impending danger coming to my house should they ever got hit by lightening or even by a tornado.

I couldn't afford to get them taken down so I used what I have. On two sepparate ocasions Ipointed my fingers and spoke to these trees to never fall on my house nor on my deck.

I pointed to the location where it would be safe for my house and famiyl should they fall, two storms, came just month appart, and took them both down and layed them excatly where I had pointed.

anyway, I enjoy your writings and will continue to read whenever you post. Wishing you great success here at WA and in whatever your niche.

Hi Craig - which is what I assume your name is from the comments below!
Thanks for the follow..... and, for the example in how to write an interesting bio. I shall be following suit shortly!
Interesting hobbies. I'm definitely not a doggy person. I grew up in Ethiopia where dogs were only kept as guard dogs and, since my parents were missionaries, they didn't want to put people off from coming into our home. Though, thinking of that, all my 3 sisters have owned and cared for dogs.
I love the raising and releasing butterflies/.
I'm curious, also, to be discovering how many grandparents there are here in WA - we need to keep our brains working and how better than by earning a little extra on the side.
Looking forward to learning more from you as I dig deeper.

Hello Craig,

Thanks very much for following me. I'm now following you in return.

You have an impressive bio with a long-time affiliation with WA and I hope to learn from your considerable knowledge and experience.

Regarding the Monarch butterflies, perhaps you're aware that the Monarchs have been migrating through Minnesota (where I live) for ages. Like so many areas of the U.S., Minnesota has seen a dramatic reduction in the Monarch population. As you know, one of the reasons for this has been a steady loss of habitat that includes the elimination of their favorite food source - Milkweed. Well, the good news here is that something is now being done to reverse this trend. Many areas around the state have become proactive in restoring the habitat and planting a great deal of Milkweed in many locations. Although it's still a little early, the results thus far have been very encouraging.

Kudos to you for your hard work and dedication to the preservation of these magnificent creatures!

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Craig!
What an interesting life you have lead! I am totally amazed at what you've been able to accomplish. I don't really know how to train dogs, but my good hubby-buddy an' I have been very fortunate in that dogs an' most other animals just seem to know what we want them to do an' they usually do it.

Your Monarch Butterfly project completely takes my breath away. I never had any idea that tagging butterflies was something that could even be DONE. I s'pose I must have thought that if it was necessary to count 'em, someone maybe stood there an' held up a number while each butterfly cooperatively accepted that number. I certainly hope you have taken many pictures an' written many journal entries about your experiences. I would certainly be interested in seeing alla' that. An' I'm SURE that your posterity would love to see pictures an' know of your obvious love for the Monarch Butterflies. Please do that for the generations to follow.

An' if you happen to post it all on a website, I'm sure there are a lot more than ME who would devour such information!

Thank you so much for following me. I do appreciate it an' I am clicking to follow you, as well.
It's great to meet you. I really look forward to getting to know you an' wish the greatest good fortune in all you do.

Hello Labman. How are you doing? I have a concern that maybe you could help me out with. I am having a very difficult time using the sites that Kyle gave us in the lessons to search for free images that are not copyright finding the the pic that I am looking for. I am looking for free images of real book covers of books I have read. Do you know where I could find those? And do you know how I could find out whether or not an image is copyright or not? I am guessing that once I am set up as an affiliate with Amazon, I could use any book images from their site..... yeah?

I was looking over some of your posts to see how WA puts "it" all together into a finished product.

A couple of observations:

1. You really do n0t sell anything, just show friends where to buy product or two if they are interested;

2. You are a real woodworker!

I mention that last one because before my back injury I considered myself an amateur woodworker, but after some of your work? I couldn't possibly put myself into the same classification as you!

Let's just say I dappled with wood. You work with wood.

Thanks for the lesson!

Dear Craig,
I just took time to read, your profile (I have major computer problems, what a pain! So I have gotten behind) You are my man, raising Monarch Butterflies, Wow! I have planted milkweed all over the property, but each year I see fewer and fewer on them. WSU is doing a study on why they are declining. I would love to raise them! Do you find eggs and raise them? I have seen very few eggs the last two years.

Yes, I search for eggs but often won't get the timing right. Caterpillars are also collectable and you can raise them in a bucket.

Hello Labman. I have a beagle, his name is Ollie and he is a handful. He will be 1yr old in July. Wow! You have a very interesting bio, I never thought about raising butterfly's! Can't milkweed be used as a painkiller? I do believe I read that somewhere. Apparently I have 7days to communicate this way so if I go quiet after that you will know I'm not premium. Have a good night! I need to get to bed, I have to get up early in the AM for work.

Hi there. I saw the picture of the labs and that is how I decided who to pick to help me with level 2 lesson 9. Very scientific I thought. I have seemed to have a lab mix in my home at all times. There is also a corgi always. It feels a bit over flowing with animals here sometimes.
I was reading about your butterflies. I did not know that they were called "crops". I can't even imagine how you would tag them.
I have been in the animal field all my life. Computers, which I generally refer to as "evil TV.'s" , I know very little about. I also have no social media skills.
So this is a great choice for me , don't you think. Actually I have not asked anyone at the house to help me bcs they just lean over you and do it for you. I have actually figured out a lot more than I thought I was capable of.
Moving on, I have gone and started a G+ acct. I have fumbled around in there for a good while. I do not know how to drop it, or join it over to here.
I tried to do what someone suggested about going to my search bar on G+ but no luck. I also looked around on my profile there and any other button that I could push. UGH....

I love the picture of your labs. When I was 10, I got my first dog, half lab and half Akita, but looked mostly lab and had the personality. She lived to be 16, and when she passed she left behind so many people who remembered how smart and fun, and gentle she was, even as big as a sheep. lol

Excited to connect here on WA. Have a great night!

Craig,

A beautiful story about your Monarch project. It is nice to hear about other member's interests. An awesome niche.

I haven't started the Affiliate Bootcamp. I'm on track to build my niche for my volunteer groups I'm involved in since I'm the social media rep for at least two organizations not counting my own. I would like to work with non profits on writing content for their programs so they can gain more exposure online.

However if had no products on my site at all the process as per video should still work? Thanks again , Gary L>

Good day Craig, Going good thanks for the video; If I want to add say 50 products to my site will this automatically populate on my main page like I have it ? Also , in my back office if I want to create Another website for a diff product , do I just go to DIVI at bottom of my WP ? thanks Gary
Reply
Labman Premium
Another Website for a different product will require a new URL and a new installation of WordPress and another instance of the theme.

No, the way that the theme is currently set up, you would need to add the new products to the main page individually. You can duplicate the row and make changes but each one will need to be separate because of the way that Amazon Terms of Service are worded. Amazon doesn't want people creating Stores outside of Amazon so they make it difficult to do this and impossible to use the Woocommerce plugin for their products.
Reply
GaryLalande2 Premium
I will try Ali express as well, I think they all products in bulk all at once...they have a plug-in for this. In meantime will just duplicate rows with either Amazon or Ali, take it slow . So new sites just have more WP logins via Site Rubix - Thanks much Gary L>
Reply
Labman Premium
WA hosting is available for 25 sites that you own the URL. An additional 25 sites are available with the .siterubix.com extension. The siterubix sites have some limitations.

If you aren't using Amazon, the Woocommerce plugin should be usable for those products. This could simplify what you want to do.
I would make sure to continue with the WA training before you get too involved with adding products.

Good evening Craig !
Your article about your dog's training and your activity among the Monarch butterflies caught all my attention . It must be captivating to work at different stages of the development of these " flying beauties of the wild " and it is sad to hear that they are a dying breed as you seem to acknowledge it ? Is it for this reason that you say that the Monarch project has come to an end for you ?
Anyway,I wish you good luck with your dogs and your activity with the butterflies for this year and would be interested in hearing about new developments.

I have relocated to Tennessee. The Monarch's population here is still moving North so the Methuselah generation doesn't occur here in this location.

It may still be possible to raise a few but not in the numbers that occurred when I was in Western New York.

She just turned 4 last week. We have taught her many tricks, and she loves to play hide & seek with my daughter. The problem is that she dislikes my husband! He was away overseas for 2 years (only visiting every couple months), and now she growls at him whenever he is in the room and doesn't let him touch her! It's really frustrating. He wants us to get rid of her, but I can't imagine doing that!

Oh my. Well, I recommend Puppy Ping Pong.
Treats I use are Microwaved Hot Dogs. Microwave them until they are like jerky. I slice them lengthwise into about 8 strips then microwave them. Paper towels absorb the grease.

Puppy ping pong is a way to strengthen the recall command and create trust. It sounds like the dog doesn't trust your hubby.
Position about 15 feet apart (in a controlled area- A fenced area is perfect). He holds the dog and you call her. She gets a treat when she gets to you. Turn her around and have him call her. Treat when she reaches him.

If she only goes to him reluctantly, he needs to make it fun for her. With Labs food is usually sufficient. If she doesn't come at all, shorten the distance. Have hubby use a high happy voice not a gruff man tone. He can also try standing in front, showing her the treat and taking a few steps backward while calling her.

5-10 minute sessions multiple times a day. if you can keep to a schedule, that works best for the dog.

Hi there Craig,
Dog trainer here as well. Wonderful to hear about your work with the monarchs.... very cool indeed. My daughter, also Gracie... but only with two legs, loves butterflies. We raised one as well that we found out on some plants in our flower beds. Aptly named the butterfly plant, we were so delighted to see that a monarch had come and created a chrysalis on our plant. We took the plant inside to our sun-room in a big old cheese puffs container and waited patiently for the magic to happen. It was so cool when it did! I know Gracie will never forget that and hope she does the same with her children when she gets old enough to have her own family! Good to see you on here and I may have questions later.

Thanks for the follow,

The most interesting visitor to our garden thus far has been a hummingbird moth. Also, my dad raised five generations of Golden Retrievers through my childhood into my adulthood. When my son was younger we volunteered for a program that tagged the monarchs to that they could be tracked. Not many people know about the Monarchs.

Hi, Craig. Enjoyed your profile. Labs are wonderful dogs. I had a black lab, Raven, that I trained and certified with Therapy Dogs International. She earned her Tail Waggin' Tutor title for 100 visits to libraries and schools to listen to kids read who are embarrassed to read in front of people. My first kid we worked with is in 5th grade now and is reading on an 8th grade level. Was several levels behind in first grade when he started reading to Raven. I lost her in 2014 to cancer, and I still miss her so much. I have a "pointador" that I rescued about 6 months ago, but she is not going to qualify for pet therapy because she is too shy and nervous. She's sweet, but I do miss my hobby and "my"kids. She just turned 2 in July, so there's still a lot of crazy lab puppy left in her. She's in her 3rd class (advanced) at PetSmart, but I am still having problems with her heeling/loose leash walking...still wants to pull. Any suggestions? But I digress. Just had to respond to you with a screen name like that! Back to WA, I am a newbie, just going through my first series of training videos. Very excited about the program and the community and really enjoying it. How about you? What's your status?
Reply
Labman Premium
When she starts to pull. Walk in the other direction. One quick jerk on the leash (no choke chain, just a flat collar) if she doesn't respond have a tidbit in your hand for when she does comply. 10 minutes of that and lots of changes in direction and she will be totally focused on you. She gets a bit of a treat then off you go. ( I use hotdog pieces microwaved to a jerky like texture, pea sized bits)
Keep the sessions short but do them 3-4 times a day.

I'm on the east coast of Australia, what kinds of plants do you recommend I plant in the garden to encourage them to visit?

Bright colors and nectar bearing flowers are usually effective at bringing the butterflies. I'm not familiar with your native species but here in the states the Butterfly bush and purple cone flowers are quite effective.

Hi! Mr. Labman, I enjoyed your colorful note on a personal adventure, which definitely benefits the nature and social harmony. Now, I am on my 3rd day of Premium to explore what online business may/can do for me. In using WP platform, I found this platform is not as versatile and functional for editing as what I expected from those in Microsoft Office or Open Office. Please just take a look at the only page, HOME, that I just published and perceive what I meant. Of course, be my critic. Again, it is nice to know you and hopefully learn more from you. You should be proud you helped longer than tons of people who don't even think about the little fellows and can still enjoy them even though your time raising them is over. I have a Bachelors degree in Sociology and an Associate in Theology. I say this because I just want people to know I do know something about this.

Thank you for your offer to help and I am taking you up on that. I am referring to the video in Course 1, Lesson 9 I believe. Kyle is showing how we change the privacy policy to our own website name we created in WA. But when I went to do that I noticed my privacy policy had already been updated with my domain name, so I didn't need to do that step. In other words I didn't have to go thru the policy and change it from siterubix to my domain name. I hope I am making sense here. And he said we also would have to update google analytics. I don't know what that is or how to do it.
Reply
Labman Premium
Go into GA and create a new entity with the new website name then add the tracking code to All In One SEO. In a couple of days you will start seeing the traffic from the new code to the site. In 30 days you can remove the siterubix site from Google Analytics and use the new one exclusively.

Hi Craig, thanks for the follow (I've followed you back :) ).
What great interesting and unusual projects you are involved with!
I've heard about tagging birds (since my homeland, Israel, is in the middle of the birds migration from Europe to Africa and back), but this is the first time I hear about butterflies tagging!

BTW, don't know if you know that (I guess you probably do :) )...Methusela is a Hebrew name from the bible of a man who lived for almost 1000 years!)

Wishing you huge success!

Hey Labman thanks for following me and I enjoyed reading your story, which I have a question about. After you tag the butterflies and release them, Do people contact you when they find them and read the tag. I wish you lived near Philly because I could use your dog training expertise to help with a dog that we rescued from a shelter about a year ago. The shelter and our Vet both told us in the beginning that he might reach 70 lbs. Well he's about 14 months old now and was 105 lbs about a month ago at his last Vet appt. He still hasn't filled out yet either. He's not a bad dog or mean or anything like that. I just wish that he would respond a little quicker when I'm calling for him. Any Suggestions? Thanks for talking to me. You were the 1st member to do so and I appreciate it. Have good day

you might find this post helpful. http://candres.siterubix.com/the-recall-or-come-command/

From the first blog I did here so it is a bit older post but the technique is sound. Basically, you want to make coming to you the best thing in his life. A good high value treat is the key. It doesn't have to be food although if that is his motivation this will work well. I have one that goes nuts for a toy and another that is ball crazy so much that she will dive under a bag full of hot dogs for her ball.
Whatever motivates him the best should be used to treat them on the recall command.

You do keep busy and have some interesting skills and hobbies. Sorry to hear that you will have to give up the Monarchs.

I also have a web development service where I design websites for customers. I haven't brought in any new customers for quite a while because I want to spend more time on digital and product marketing for myself.

I know there is more money in marketing than in website development, so that is where I want to be right now. I don't like placing so much emphasis on money since that isn't what it's all about. But I have spent so much time, effort and money on trying this, that I at least need to pay myself back. I've just started with WA. I'm surprised that you have been here for 7 years. WOW!

I saw your message on my profile page earlier today, and I want to thank you that you invited me to follow! It has been quite overwhelming since I joined here a couple of days ago, not the least am I impressed by the sincerity of the people in this community. We are all uniquely different, coming from different backgrounds, but deep down we are all on the same journey. I came here by discovering WA through reviews, and once here, I like what I see. I will update my profile in the coming days and weeks, presenting my work. To me, the potential here is a new experience, a new route, so I will take one step at a time. I have never before felt motivation like now to get to know people in an online community, which oftentimes is not as convincing as this one. I look forward to this!

I will read about your work a bit later on, when there is more time. It definitely seems like WA is the right place to be. Here is no lack of activity!

Thanks Craig. I also raised monarch butterflies as a kid and that is too long ago to remember however I would love to see a release one year it must be amazing. We are lab people also but sadly have not been able to get another just yet after the passing of our last, Sam.

That is really cool I used to raise monarch butterflies when I was a kid and I know only like 1 out of a hundred caterpillars successfully makes it to be a butterfly so 60 is quite an accomplishment. I only raised them 1 at a time and I've successfully released 3 of them and it was a big deal for me

Craig,

Wow! The butterfly releases must be a sight to behold! :-) Your labs are beautiful too. My nearby family members only get labs for their sweet disposition. If I wasn't in a condo, gone for a good part of the day, and unable to fence my backyard due to HOA rules, I would have one as well. Because this is the case, I have a parakeet named Perth.

Thanks for following me, and if I have questions I think you can help with, I will shoot them your way!

Sorry for your job losses. You seem like such a strong and powerful person. I love your picture of your pups and their names! So excited for how many of your Butterflies that you have released. They are such a crucial part of our ecosystem, and insects are easily taken for granted.

Hi! May I ask how does the Amazon affiliate work specifically? I've just started... and I don't know what I need to click or search or whatever to get the affiliate thing... Pls explain to me the steps in detail if possible
So I've actually visited the Amazon website, scrolled down to the bottom and saw 'Make Money with Us' title.
And from there I'm stuck whether to click the 'Become an Affiliate' option or not... so pls help :)

You would sign up with Amazon as an Affiliate (Associate). They then provide a link for the product or page (on their site) that you promote. When people click on the link and buy, you are credited with the sale and earn a commission on the sale.

Thankyou for the follow. Always good to meet a fellow dog lover and someone who works with dogs. Your Labs are gorgeous. We have 10 dogs! 6 bull arabs (my partners), a golden retriever (my daughters), a border collie and 2 Jack Russells.

Very interested to find out more about the butterflies. Butterflies are my other favourite.

Hello Craig, good to see you here at Wealthy Affiliate, I am now following you, I am also following you on Google plus! It looks like you've been on Wealthy Affiliate for several years, which is great, I hope that it is working well for you. Glad to see that you like your labradors, a fantastic breed of dog, I must admit that I am a German Shepherd man, although I don't have a dog at the moment, hopefully in the not-too-distant future that will change. I look forward to networking with you and reading your blog posts.

All the best to you Craig and a very happy 2017.

Great post Labman. Our family enjoys a lab also. My son has one. She is an absolutely gorgeous dog. She was being trained to fetch birds but had no real desire to fetch more than a couple of times. She is very smart and a good watch dog.

All the best to you in your business.
