First Sale. It's Like Yesterday.

Last Update: December 21, 2015

Many of you probably don’t know this, but it took me THREE FULL MONTHS to make my first sale online.

Three months of hard work. Three months of learning. Three months of doing stuff that didn’t quite work. Three months of doing stuff that actually worked.

One thing that was consistent during this first 3 months was that I felt successful the entire time. I was learning brand new things, I was building a website (which was freakin’ amazing to me), I was creating content that other people could read on the Internet, I was creating “campaigns” and bidding on these keyword things.

It was freakishly cool.

My Landmark First Sale.

The first sale to be honest was just the cherry on top, but I was hitting so many successful days of “accomplishment” that my focus didn’t necessarily revolve around money on the way to this first sale, the progress with my business and the non tangible things like learning to code, build content, adding images, joining affiliate programs, creating campaigns, and helping others fueled my passion.

The reason I am even telling you this, is because people naturally want success now and they want it fast. That is very rarely the case though.

Like a little tiny snowball rolling down a hill of fresh snow, the effort you put forth now and the hard work that you invest in your business, will cumulatively snowball your business.

In other words, the work you are doing this very second WILL NOT pay off this very second. It may pay off a month down the road, it may even pay off a year down the road, but it will more than likely pay off at some point in the future. At sometimes pay off forever.

Yes, Your Work Now Creates FOREVER Potential

It is a beautiful thing. I have literally written content that has paid me for years. One post that took my 30 minutes to write has lead to $1,000’s in ongoing monthly income. I have had single search terms reap me almost a full time income over the years through PPC campaigns. ONE FREAKIN’ SEARCH TERM.

Sounds ridiculous, but anyone that has created any level of success online will be able to share more than one story like this with you.

Sometimes the efforts you put forth never truly strike gold though. That is fine. Not everything you do will be an immediate hit, and sometimes never really finds its purpose in your business, but it is all part of the learning process and the process of “getting better”.

You Will Have Your Highs and Lows.

Michael Jordan, unquestionably the best basketball player to ever step on the court missed millions of jump shots in his life through practice and even in the games he played.

But he also hit lots...and LOTS.

Your business will behave the same way.

Your business is foreshadowed by your “current” effort. But your current business is not the result of your current effort, it is a result of your past effort.

So for those of you that are starting out, I want you to know this. The time, energy and effort you put forth now IS going to pay off later. I promise you that. You will make your first sale. You will make your 2nd sale. You will make your 100th sale…

But you need to make a promise to yourself, you will give yourself the time to achieve these goals and you won’t be so hard on yourself in the early stages. Building a website is a big success, creating content, getting engagement, learning wordpress, meeting people, getting help, helping others...these are ALL successes that will add up in the bigger and broader scope of your business. ;)

I would love to hear all of your thoughts on the “first sale”, whether you have made your first sale or you are still working towards it. What is your perception of this and how does it impact the way you behave in terms of the process of creating and growing your business?

I look forward to hearing your feedback.

I am new at this and I am so afraid that I am going to fail which I don't like that option but the only time I have to work on this is after a 9-10 hour day at work and the weekends.

I just hope I can pull everything together like everyone has done here on WA.

I know I am not following a lot of people but like I said I am all new at this.

Thank You everyone that has helped me so far.

I am trying to get through all this training after I get home from work but some days it's hard when I am working 9-10 hour days.

Well here goes some more training.

Thanks again

One thing that attracted me to W is that it did not promise that I would get rich quick. It didn't guarantee I'd have a good income. I liked this because I knew that realistically, I would have to put a lot of work in ahead of any success.

I love the little successes...the first content, the first images, being ranked by Google, the first comments on my site, etc. But then again a month ago I was still in bed everyday accomplishing nothing much because I live with chronic illnesses. My first day sitting at the computer was a major accomplishment to me! And the second and the third until now I have been at this for a month and have only missed two days that I had wanted to be working. I guess I expected myself to fail, but decided to act as if I weren't going to and it has worked.I couldn't be more thrilled!

I'm sure that my first sale is going to rock my world. I'm looking forward to it, just not so anxiously that I know it will happen somewhere down the road.

Just over 10 days with WA but feel so much excitement carrying me forward. My whole life has been a journey full of learning experiences, both good and bad, and I'm still learning thanks to Kyle and everyone for all the great information available here.

The current part of my life's journey is amazing, the amount that I've learned in the past 10 days is incredible and being able to share this with so many positive, helpful, encouraging, motivating people from around the world makes it worthwhile no matter how much or when the money starts to follow.
I'm addicted, lol.

So wonderful to hear Edward, if you have learned this much in just your past 10 days online, imagine what you are going to learn in the next 10 or a 100.

I have been at this 15 years full time now and I have never been more addicted to this "online business" thing. It is exciting when you realize that it is far more opportunity ridden than the offline business world and you can literally head in any direction that you want online and come out a winner.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading that ! I'm at the very beginning of my WA journey. Only just starting out with my website. It has been great thus far. "Not too fast, too far too soon" is one of my mottos, as is "Continual and Never-Ending Improvement." Success is never instantaneous, success is cumulative, and
Time + Tremendous Effort = Success + Satisfaction. Nobody said it is going to be easy. Only those with positive and determined mindsets succeed . Whether it's Wealthy Affiliates or any other life challenge we take on. I believe this and will execute all I do with this in mind. It's worked for all 65 of the years since I was placed on this earth, so why shouldn't it work now?!

Totally agree with you Roy, I'm 68 and have succeeded in so many other ways by tackling life's challenges head on. Why stop now?
Reply

Yeah, it takes the initial perseverance that we all have in us, but some of us lose patience in the early stages of business (in particular within the online world).

What has worked in your past 65 years, will continue to work. If people applied half of the effort too their new business ventures that they have done in their day jobs, there would be many more successful people online.

But sales aside, I agree that the accomplishment of learning new things is a great feeling. I updated my blog today and called myself an Affiliate Marketer. Hopefully, soon I can change this to Full Time Affiliate Marketer. Great post

I put whatever time I could, it would change on a day by day basis as I was full time in school. As I started to see results and see the opportunity, I started to 'trade' my TV time, my time for friends in some cases, and any 'wasted' time for time to work on my business.

There are a lot of hours in the day and we wall do have some time where we waste it, even if it is a lunch hour break, fit it in where you can. ;)

Hi Kyle, and HAPPY NEW year to you and your family!

I have not received my first sale yet, and I don't expect to get it tomorrow or the day after either!

I have been at this for less than a month, and I agree with you -- getting up a website and writing content is freaking awsome for me as well!

I am enjoying myself learning new stuff and taking part in this awsome community you have made here at WA!

I am more concerned with the jouney than the destination.- I want to enjoy the time I spend on my website or researching keywords or commenting on the different fora. Because this is the stuff I have to do to understand this medium.

My ulterior motive starting this journey is to promote my own stuff, which is rock mechanics.

I have been a consultant and instructor in rock mrchanics for the oil and gas industry for more than 40 years - a real oldfart!

During this time I have written a lot of technical papers as well as my own course manual in rock mechanics. I have also a library of power point presentations. RIght now all this material is just sitting on my hard drive and collecting 'digital dust'.

I have a lot of ideas about how to use this content, like a website for how to, an ebook for the course manual, or maybe a physical bound manual with a workbook, a cloudbased simulation service... you get the drive.

But unfortunately I am 'technically challenged' when it comes to IT and Internet, so therefore this attempt to learn how to do these things. In this manner I will be more independent, because I KNOW what to ask for when I hire people to assist me.

And frankly speaking, what you have provided here is quite well laid out and it is a joy to use!

I want to activate all my stuff and spread the word about the importance of rock mechanics in the industry I have served all my professional life! That's my passion :-)!

That's how I look on the 'first sale'!

Cheers
rolfkb - on a journey to online success!

PS I would love to send you a PM about my ideas to get your professional opinion about what's feasible and what's not. But I know that you are very busy so please send me a PM that you accept so i don;t bother you with stuff that I can find out by myself as I'm progressing through the training.

Kyle your insight is inspiring. I get caught up in the discussions about money and sales and start thinking maybe this isn't for me. But, then I read something like this and I remember all the things I have already learned and all the many, many things I am very anxious to learn that there never seems to be enough hours in a day. I wake up, take my daughter to school, come home, get on the computer, get my notebook and pen and get to work on my WA lessons. There have been days that it is time to pick up my daughter and I haven't looked up at the time all day. I get so absorbed in the lessons and building my site or rethinking ideas that I have worked all day and not looked up. Not only can I eventually monetize my site and my ideas but the skills I am learning can lead to all types of creative avenues. This journey can take us anywhere. How exciting.

Thank you so much for sharing what your first sale was like! It gives us hope for those who have yet to see a sale. It is amazing it took you 3 months to do it, but like you said though you worked very hard during that time and the more work you put in, the more you get out of it.

I'm hoping 2016 will be my breakout year to see my very first sale. That would just create so much momentum for me and prove that the work I'm doing and that I've learned is actually working. I would love in 2 years to start making enough money online that I can quit my current job and not have to worry about requesting time off during the holidays so I can be with my family.

I know I have to work consistently and put in the hard work now and sooner or later it has got to pay off. I certainly hope it pays off. It certainly looks like for most everyone here though that has stuck with it, they've started seeing some early success.

Okay so here's how it works first you have to head to your dashboard ---> appearance ---> customize ---> static front page. Then you have to select static page then under the front page look for the page that you are want to be the landing page.

*NOTE: This will only work for pages not for posts.

I still waiting. But I saw yesterday an interesting thing. Three years ago I was testing this market, but unfortunately, I didn´t know about WA at that time.
But like I said, yesterday I was looking in google analytic, just to see the traffic. I have three pages, to many, but it´s a reason for it. What was interesting is that even so I stopped with the former page 3 years ago, and it´s not working for a long time, the traffic is higher than my page on similar niche! Even so it´s not sale it shows, for me at least, how the time factor is important about traffic.
Thank for making WA so great Kyle and Carson and merry Christmas and a happy new year everybody!

Hi Kyle, Thanks for being real. I've laid out a few pages on paper to get an idea of what might go where on my website and what things I could sell on which page. It does look like it's a ways till I sell something, but right now I'm concerned with a bunch of "how do I do that's" - and I'm learning so much about how to get my words out there. I have a website from Godaddy that I did myself without help, but what I'm learning here is such a good guide as to how to do a website that works. I was really tired of guessing how to do things.

It is encouraging hearing your words. I'm just keeping on going one step at a time.

My perception of making a first sale, (as it hasn't quite happened for me yet) is that its a journey, life is a journey and if you are always focused on the end results you miss the roses on the side, you got to take each moment as it comes learn from it and know that everything involved is a small success because its one step forward to where you want to be !!! If you start it off negative it will end negative, bring a positive energy to it and it will not only be fun but it will attract amazing things in your life on your way to making your first sale. Don't be so hard on yourself, its something new, and you will get there moment by moment, little by little.

Thank you Kyle! It's often a source of inspiration hearing from one of the two people who created this awesome website here at WA! Just knowing that it takes a lot of trials and tribulations along route and something that you experienced is what causes me to keep pressing forward. Along with Carson you have created a system that truly does work Kyle! One has to simply have faith, dedication and a never-give-up attitude. The fruits of one's labor will be created.

A great post!

I was so excited about my first sale I did a screenshot and have it hanging on my wall where I can see it while I work.

It made me not only believe in myself and WA but also drove me to work smarter, harder and longer to build my business.

It's not about the money for me as much as it is the challenge and the feeling I get from helping others and making accomplishments. Of course the money is part of what allows me to build my business. :-)

Thanks Kyle!

My 3rd day and I am appreciating the outreach from the owners of Wealthy Affiliate. I have tried most everything online with no sales or success. I believe so because I lacked, training, coaching and a focused roadmap which is everything in this community and a whole lot more. I love this statement from this post because I have a lot of past efforts behind me. "Your business is foreshadowed by your “current” effort. But your current business is not the result of your current effort, it is a result of your past effort."

Have not had my first niche sale but I did just in the past few days get my first premium referral. I was and I still am pumped about that. I was working along admittedly a little in the dumps because I could not see any traffic to either of my sites.

I know I have not been consistent on content, but I also know I have been allowing things to prevent that.

I took the bonus video training that you provided to those who signed up for yearly during the Black Friday event. That in of itself was an eye opener and changed my focus.

Now with this blog and my first referral that went premium I see momentum. So I see exactly what you are saying about what we do pays off in the future.

Thanks, Kyle, and Carson, for such a wonderful program. Very few people would be willing to provide the help, coaching and community that you have.

Great motivational post Kyle, I did dream last night to be ahead in my process. To be able to say that i am working from home and i am free to live my life. I forged this vision in my mind, i need that when i spend hours trying to figure out how to fix or do something I clearly have no ideas how to do it.
But is true, i do not fail, i grow and repeat myself....if you can do it i can do it!
I will love to write a post about my first sale, OMG i will love it.

Thanks for sharing Kyle!

It's been almost 4 months for me and I am still waiting for my first sale, even if it is only 0,0001 $ lol but I need it to know I am doing things right.

Things seem to go backwards lately and every move I make, makes me move 2 steps back. Every time I think like 'this' is it and it can't possibly go wrong... it goes worse!
It's like somebody is testing my motivation and patience ... It's really hard to stay focused sometimes, especially when you literally worked your ass off for 3 full months!

I am not tying to be negative and keep on believing that success is around the corner but it better show his face soon hahaha

But one thing is sure , I am never ever going to give up on this and failure is not an option!

I made my first sale with a blog I made on weebly about 8 months ago. I was into Amazon FBA, learning the ropes and was part of a free community. I made a resource page, compiling all the great software and services, like keyword research tools and graphic designer websites. I wasn't even into affiliate programs at the time so I didn't have any of my links affiliated. I was quickly approached by a graphic designer asking me to promote his brand for a commission. Sure enough I made 2 sales within a month, for 17US each. Meanwhile I struggled with Amazon FBA and ended up losing money. Needless to say I ended up here at WA. Affiliate marketing is my preferred method now. Thanks for the post Kyle, take care.

Hi, Kyle!

Every time I step into my WA world and do a bit more on my site I am encouraged. Today is for me a landmark day that I feel is going to finally reap a few little sales that may, as you said in your post above, keep providing earnings way into the future.

It is a post on something for which I am passionate, protecting families, especially special needs families, in a fire emergency. The Jaaxy site rank for this page was position 9 on page 1 earlier today, but this evening before heading for the hay "-) I thought I'd check it again.

It is now Page 1 Position 1 and the post related to this REVIEW and where there are internal links is Page 1 Position 7. This is so exciting. I have had other posts on Page 1 and in Position 1 with no results in sales. I have had a bit of a struggle getting my site monetized, some because of the subject and the narrowness of my audience, some because I wasn't figuring out how to tap into my audience and do good follow through.

Now I am hopeful with this post things may take a positive tack toward earnings. The product I am reviewing is a no-brainer for families and while the company does not have an affiliate program they have been able to give me a PromoCode that once people order, if they will use the PromoCode, they get a discount and I get a commission. I'm hoping this will work.

Just thought I'd share with you how excited I am in anticipation of seeing my website taking off. I believe what you teach, that any niche can make money is going to be my experience too. Once this starts happening for me it will be another example of the truth of your words.

Thank you, yes THANK YOU, for all you, Carson, and the WA team continue to do to support us!

Linda

Patience is a virtue when going into business for ourselves. We all naturally want to achieve income fast, but we treat it differently for some reason than we do anything else in life.

To get a job, we go to school for 4 years and get an education. During that 4 years we are not earning anything, then we get a decent paying job if we are lucky.

The same type of person attempts to start a business and expects income in the first month and to know everything int he first month. That is the mentality that I see leads to the biggest failure and is something that everyone needs to get past if they ever want to create a wildly successful business.

Yes we definitely do get desperate to leave our current situations! We have to take a step back and remind ourselves that nothing worthwhile was ever accomplished in a short time

Am I the only one seen this in a different way? I think this is to hard. Look at the comments. There is a lot of people that hasn't make any sale or money for months and they are paying 47 dollars a month. I get that its a good training and you get support but that's all. He (Kyle) and others can get a lot of money with these techniques but its not that simple and there is no guarantee you will succeed. Getting from one of his examples: its like Michael Jordan tell you pay me 47 dollars and I will teach you how to play basketball, we are not going to play like him, never. I see that the only thing that WA want for us is to promote them, get our low profit and they can get more and more money. Sorry Kyle, this is just my opinion, I know that you know about this market but I know that a lot of people that has just loose money trying this instead of gaining some. (PS sorry for my English, I speak Spanish)

mojica15: Great Post! HOWEVER, you are entirely misguided. There are no guarantees in life. If you want a sure things...well SELL some drugs (very profitable) and the Feds will give you a nice place to live and FREE FOOD.

I am certified smart. I have more degrees than most large families have children. I am not rich BUT I do know that what Kyle and Carson are providing (whether it makes them rich or not) is 1) a wonderful community of like minded people. 2) training in the art of e-commerce that would cost you thousands of dollars per year if you went to an institution to learn what you have been learning here at WA. 3) WA hasn't made any promises to you or anyone. But they have shared a little hope with us that allows us to proceed according to our God given ability to succeed.

Kyle, sure as hell, doesn't need this old dog coming to his rescue or my assistance in anything. However, I have very much enjoyed every aspect of WA (with or without grand dreams of striking it rich). Fact is my friend that you can drop your $47.00 per month WA Premium dues today, tomorrow, or the next day. The $1.57 per day you keep in your pocket by canceling your Premium status will be good for a cup of coffee and a free Thrifty Nickel newspaper. What I am saying is this, if you can find ANY better use of that $1.57 per day as you learn the way of MOST future commerce in this world, then you are clearly in the wrong place.

Last but not least. There are several hundred professional NBA players in the world (that make a lot of money) and only a handful of Michael Jordons (that has more money than God). Contrast that with the fact that there are millions (hundred of millions) of people world wide involved in all forms of commerece (all making a living or better). In the decades ahead many and maybe most of those millions will be conducting e-commerce in the very way Kyle and Carson are suggesting. They don't promise Michael Jordon winnings. They simply promise that if you follow the course work and everything else WA has to offer that you will be ready for any business you want to run online in the future.

I am sorry my Spanish so (sic) bad but I try (sic) my darndest. DAN

please dont ever apologize for having an opinion. not here or anywhere. i hear frustration and hesitation in your message - please take note, you will not see premium or 100 thingy or 50 thingy by my name here. i am new. well, i am new here, not new to much else, so hear me my friend peer to peer. first of all micheal jordan could pay me a billion dollars to train with him and i will never play basketball well. or golf well, or any of a dozen other things that so many people are getting crazy wealthy doing. what i can do is learn. so can you. and i can emulate, so can you - or if you like you can spin your wheels trying to reinvent the wheel instead of following formats that work. Any other program out there will not offer the quality of training or support that this one does - in my opinion. First of all you do not have to spend any money to make money . what else offers you that? second your english is impeccable and articulate, it is your research that you might want to revisit. i honestly wish you the best, so from my heart even if you never put a dime in here please look around a little more, learn a little more before you make up your mind on anything. hide your wallet and open your eyes and i think you will be able to find more value here than you will in any other program that tries to be like this one. have an amazing day

I'm just gonna chime in to mention one thing. I see you're new here so I'm sure you ha e a lot to learn, but you need to gi e more time than a day to succeed and nobody guarantees you will be like a Michael jordan, but with hard work and persistence you can still become half as good as him which would still be a huge accomplishment.

At WA you don't just get support and training as you put.
1. The support is better than anywhere else and a lot cheaper
2. You also have a platform to build and host websites on which can cost a few hundred a year alone on other platforms
3. No one ever said you have to promote WA. It's just a thought if you can't think of what ou want to do. However I saw you ha e an interest for dogs. You can very well make a full time income talking about dogs without ever having to promote WA. There's people here that make $5,000-$10000 a month without ever promotion Wealthy affiliate and I can show you this people if you'd like.

Give yourself time to learn here please before you start judging the program you just joined yesterday

Thanks for responding my comment. I'm just frustrated because I tried for years to receive an income from home and haven't been able to do it. And after I see this site I realized that there is no easy way. Going back to the NBA, there are a lot of NBA players that make a lot of money but there is also a lot and a mean a lot of players that doesn't get to the NBA (or other close league) no matter how hard they try. And that's my point, be successful in this area is almost as difficult.

mojica15: I feel your frustration. I really do. However, WA is about e-commerce and e-commerce is no different than the millions of businessmen out there that make a profit and make a living every day but not on the internet. I am not asking you to set your sites lower. Instead, I am suggesting that you be reasonable with your expectations. If you can't make it in the NBA great. I get it. But e-commerce is about making money and a living which is what most of us get out of life. Maybe you will not be a Kyle or a Carson but you can make money online with e-commerce just like millions of others do.

WA is teaching you to become a businessman on the internet. No more and no less. How successful you become with your online business is up to you. Thank you for your reply back to me. I really appreciate it. Sincerely, DAN

NBA was just an example of failure and how some of us handle it in different ways. Some of us pick up a basketball, miss one shot and say we suck at it and give up.

Others, spend years perfecting their shot. Those are those that end up hitting more and more shots. Those are the ones that create longevity in the sport.

Same goes with the online space. Some of us take a shot at it, give themselves a week, then give up. They will never succeed.

The people that I have worked with over the years that fail at the highest rate are those that want instant success. Yes, some people are not achieving success here in 3 months, 6 months, or even 12 months, and that is what I am talking about here. Many are. Everyone is different, everyone works at different speeds, and some people are harder workers than others.

It is easy to quit. That is the easiest thing in fact to do. Quit at anything and it gives us the justification to say, it doesn't work.

However, I can and 1,000's of others can tell you this does work. It's business. Business works if you work at it.

The landscape on the Internet gives us, the regular person (not the business) a competitive advantage, the barriers to entry are limited, and the cost to start a business online has never been more affordable than it is today.

The only thing standing in the way of someone and their own personal success within the online space is THEMSELVES. I am no different than you nor are the 1,000's of folks that are and that will continue to succeed with their business here at WA.

I like anyone here, started with ZERO knowledge. I was green to this and I had nobody to help me get rolling and the opportunity, although big, was still nothing compared to what it is today within the online space. I was at way more of a disadvantage than anyone getting rolling here, yet I made it happen.

PS. And you are not paying me, you are paying for a service, an education, hosting, websites, a community, ongoing help and mentorship, tools, and bettering your skill set. A service that we invest millions into every year to make your life easier, your businesses run more efficient, offer you all the tools you need to run your business, and to keep you educated at a pace that is far ahead of the curve.

It is hard mojica, but so is getting a college degree, or learning a second language. If you give up, then who do you blame - the teacher? I don't look to a Michael Jordan analogy, but my own mother and her success. When we were young she made most of our clothes. She was good, so others sought her out to make clothes for them as well --- word of mouth (net working). She taught others to sew as well, (Kyle and Carson teaching WA) and soon there were several people, including one of my sisters, working for her (residual income). Eventually she was making school uniforms, cheer leader outfits, throw rugs, pillow covers with seasonal themes, etc, etc.
Have you tried thinking of promoting something to Spanish speaking people? Hispanics are the largest growing minority population in the United States. One thing you and my mother have in common -- Spanish is her primary language

I do compare creating a business to college all the time, because many people that spend 4 years in Uni end up wanting success in business after a month or two.

We spend $40-$80K on college with NO opportunity to earn money for 4 years, yet when it comes to building a business for ourselves where we can earn while we learn.

I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that there are so many products and services out there in this industry (which is riddled with schemers and scammers) that claim overnight riches. It's not reality.

The only lottery ticket you can create for yourself is the one that is done through hard work, persistence and giving yourself time to achieve success.

Mojica15, first I want to wish you HAPPY NEW YEAR, and that 3016 is the year when YOUR dream come through!

Then to your previous post and this comment I only want to say that WA is the only place on the net where you are provided an opportunity to "earn while you learn". since you can use the training for free as long as you want. And they throw in 2 hosted websites as a bonus as well!

Kyle homself actually RECOMMENDS that you start at the basic level and have a good test drive of the site before YOU decide to upgrade . if you find it beneficial.

Your frustration that you don't get a sale after several months is understanable. But continue working and remeber what Kyle said:

"Yes, Your Work Now Creates FOREVER Potential"

You are introducing your BUSINESS -- it takes time. And if your niche is difficult to break into why don't you promote WA and earn some commisions - you caan do that also as a basic member. Your commision then is only half of the Premium, but you work as a free affiliate!

So keep on going and don't give up -- that's what's all about. Enjoy the journey as I know you will get there! Personally I am new to this, but as I see it, the way they teach us in WA is a very robust and consistent model, and by mastering the fundamentals you will finally be able to build a consistent business.

Cheers
rolfkb - on a journey to online success!

My first sale took about 3 or 4 months.

Basically, I built a site to just test the entire business model, so I went after a tiny niche that I knew I should be able to rank for. I built my entire review site in about two weeks by writing a review article on all the available products. Then I just sat back waiting for things to happen. I remember being very skeptical about the entire concept of affiliate marketing back then.

While I almost forgot about it completely, my site slowly climbed up in Google, and reached the #1 position for it's main keywords. Then I got my first sale, a €24 commission. I remember that it blew my mind back then, because I did groceries for the exact same amount earlier that day. My site essentially paid for my food. That's when it all became real to me.

Also, the fact that this site continued making me at least €100 every month, without touching it at all, really convinced this is an amazing business model.

My first sale happened just more than year ago. Right now, I'm spending as much free time as possible on building more sites, and scaling things up. Can't wait for the moment I can do this full time :)

I think I'd just like to know if I'm doing thing right.
No sales or referrals as yet. Website still needs tweaking but I have so little time due to being committed all over the place. I'm not sure my keyword are in correctly and I'm trying to track my traffic. I'm looking forward to my first but I'm expecting it will take some more work. I'm enjoying the learning experience. Looking more feedback, I've had some good feedback so far, I just need the technical know-how to implement some more changes.

bee1ali: First of all, e-commerce is all about (well) commerce. Your website looks great. You have learned a lot. You are obviously trying very hard. But compare your website to a "bricks and mortar" store in the town where you live in. You have this store on main street called "Forty + Not Out". Great! Sounds Good and Looks Good just like your website. So why would anyone come into your store? They will only come in if you have something to sell that they want to buy. You can still have the same sign over your store but you had better tell me what your are selling...shoes, clothes, toys, guns, sex, alcohol or what ever. What are you selling? Your website (I think) is trying to sell Wealthy Affiliate membership (I think) but I had to search and search to find it.

Now there is nothing wrong with selling Wealthy Affiliate but you have to think about your site just like a merchant thinks about his store in town.

Second, there are a lot of people selling WA on the internet just like there are millions of people selling shoes, clothes, toys, guns, sex, and alcohol on the internet. Why would they buy WA from you over anyone else who is selling WA? Because you do it better or cheaper or more interestingly than anyone else. That is the only reason why! So your store has to catch their attention and hold it long enough to arouse their curiosity. Most people on the internet shop exactly like your wife or most women shop. They look for style, price, convenience, and need. So you have to represent your product (if it is WA) just like the store on main street would sell it. NO more or no less.

Ali: Your website is about you. That is ok if you want people to find you and talk about what you want to talk about. It is also called a social blog. However, I do not think that you are looking for a social blog. social blogs don't sell anything and they do not make any money...they just blog for the fun of it. You do not want that, you want to make money.

If you are NOT going to create and operate a social blog you have to make some changes. I recommend the following:
1. take a sheet of paper and draw a large triangle on it.
2. starting with the name of your site place that at the top of the triangle.
3. Underneath your website name put what the site is about (be very specific). This then becomes your subheading to your site. Remember it can say that you sell a remarkable product called WA or shoes, clothes, toys, guns, sex, and alcohol or simply anything that you want to sell in your store.
4. This is where it gets tough, but you have to decide. What is the most creative way you can think of to sell your goods or service to the public. This has to be good. Use your imagination. What would draw you to purchase your good or service? This then becomes one of your site pages and within that page you articulate how you are going to do this through the content you write. Think of it as a Sale sign out front of your store on main street telling everyone what you have ON SALE.
5. Follow step 4 again to create your next page, which will include the next reason why your customers would want to purchase from you.
6. Follow steps 4 and 5 again to create what your next page will be and what topics you will utilize and write about as to why your shoppers are going to purchase your good or service. You really don't need more than three if you have really put your mind to it.

Be careful not to just add Amazon widgets to your site hoping that you will sell something from it. You won't. Why would anyone purchase a book, for example, from you if they can go on Amazon and purchase the book easier. BUT if there is a book on Amazon that talks about e-commerce (if you are going to sell WA membership) or talks about whatever good or service you are going to sell then you could "provide a review of that book-what is the book about and why you would recommend that book." and if the person reading your review likes the review there is an excellent chance that they will "click" on your widget and purchase the book through Amazon just because you have driven them to it and you will receive a commission for the sale from Amazon.

Now think about it Ali. That sounds like a hell of a lot of work to do to sell a book but once again think about the main street bookstore that has to do everything that they must do in their shop to sell a single book from all of their overhead expense, to the purchase of their inventory of books to sell, to writing and editing and purchasing advertising to try and bring shoppers into their bookstore. It is no difference at all other than you want to do it online.

Now one thing good about selling WA is that WA has a huge treasure chest of information and marketing tools already prepared for you to use. It's not like starting from scratch but please remember this: e-commerce is no different that the store in town other than the fact that you want to sell your goods or service to them online. No more no less.

So bottom line is if you want to sell anything online you have to become an online businessman. That is the sum total of what WA is preparing you to do. Out of sheer greed, WA finds it beneficial if you sell (which you can do quite well if you choose too) their package so they are going to help you ever which way they can to get that done. They will make money and like hundred of others you will also make money and you could make a lot of money.

Check around WA and ask who is already marketing WA and look at their sites. You will be amazed at how creative they are (and in many cases doing it quite differently from each other) and the success they are generating. But do not be fooled. Following what you have learned in WA and what I have suggested above, you can sell ANYTHING online. Just think about it. Give my comments some thought and get back to me to discuss your thoughts, please. DAN

Here I have the support of the WA community behind me. It feels like a huge cheer section that wants me to be successful. And that makes a huge difference! I haven't hit a wall or been stuck so this is what has kept me going. I also am waiting for Amazon approval(for the second time)and checked my stats there and noticed that I had 6 clicks from viewers coming thru my site just in 2 days(1st time no results). I have seen a big difference thru being consisted advertising my site on Google communities and on Linked. I truly thank you and Carson for giving me the opportunity to finally be successful online. Consistency is huge. If you truly work on your business for a sustained period of time, that is when the results will happen. I see all too often that people create one post per month, or check in on their business a few times per month expecting something amazing to happen.

It simply doesn't. If you work, your business will work for you.

Focus on the RIGHT things. That is my suggestion.

Build out your content in your initial stages. Your goal is not what to do with that one referral, it is how can you get traffic to build out more and more referrals (regardless of your niche).

This traffic is going to initially be created through targeting low competition keywords with your content. Do this on a regular basis and it won't be long before your business really starts to snowball.

Am still currently working toward that first ring of the bell. Kyle, my experience so far has been truly unbelievable. With the small amount of freetime I have at this time it has truly been amazing what I have accomplished and learned. The feedback I have received so far has almost brought tears to my eyes. I was not any form of a writer when I started this journey, and this was my biggest fear. I felt that as I looked at others sites, I wasn't fit for this. I wasn't good enough. But, the way you & Carson have built this Community, and established the Environment we get to work in, how could I give up. Even the review I wrote that isn't up to what I want to really put on my site, and the response I received blew me away. I was told it made them want to sign up all over again!!!!! That is what I am really passionate about right now.
I believe in what you & Carson have built here, and I want to penetrate the market out there in such a huge way, hoping to save those like myself from getting burned, ripped off, and taken down that nowhere road. Am about to finish Phase 1 of Bootcamp, and have had to really learn to be patient, and take it one step at a time. Thankyou so much for all the hard work, passion & zeal that both of you have contributed to making WA what it is today.

That is the case with lots of people. They fear writing, not realizing that you don't need to be a writer to be very successful online. You simply need to communicate.

Probably the least engaging content I read is by those who are 'writing experts' to be honest. The reason being is that their writing is usually self serving and is written in a way where they are worried about all of the technical of their writing, focused too much and structure/grammar...when in reality, the best style of writing for connecting with most audiences is conversational and communicative.

So glad to see you making such awesome progress.

I would be careful about waiting to roll out your website all at once. Google doesn't really like that as much as a site that is constantly being added to and constantly improving.

Just be careful, you can start reaping the rewards of your content now and I always recommend posting your content as you create it.

What if everything you are doing now doesn't work? If you post content as you go along you are going to have a very good idea of what is working well and what is leading to rankings/conversions and what is not.

My feeling was that I didn't want to do any damage to my Google rankings by publishing a site that was half baked, Recent comments elsewhere have changed my opinion so I will be publishing section by section as the content builds. I don't need to complete each section before it is published but I would like some content on each.

Thanks for the great advice. I was just a little unsure about how to tackle it.

It did feel very exciting though, and it made me think "if I can talk about it so that my friend wants to do it, I can do it online too".

If I never make another dime through WA or what I've learned here it will still be worth every penny I've spent. I have learned so much. Chances are you may be focusing part of your efforts on things that truly don't benefit your business. 90% of all of your time should be spent on creating quality content that targets specific keywords until you have a solid base of traffic.

Once you have that traffic, then you can spread your focus into things like conversions, new designs, more sophistication with technology, etc.

Website did not have traffic yet, so I figured until it happens, I would do active marketing by mouth to drive traffic to my site. The core fundamentals of PPC will never change or online marketing for that matter.

You have a potential customer. You have product that can benefit them.

You convert them through relevance.

Relevant keyword => Relevant ad = Relevant lander => Relevant product recommendation.

It works now and it will work forever.

Thanks Kyle.

My first sale was within i think 24 hours after posting a Clickbank affiliate product on a traffic site. I was thrilled, and thought I was on my way. Nothing else happened after that with clickbank, oh the hours sitting placing links on traffic sites until I realized I was marketing to others who only cared about getting their credits, not in actually buying anything. It was the wrong audience.

Amazon has worked better for me than clickbank or any other affiliate products so far, but the lessons learned were useful.
Getting the web site going and learning to build content and deliver value while applying what we learn here is priceless if we are patient and consistent.

Appreciate your stories and experience.

Yeah, the game changed quite a bit over those few years in terms of what worked within search and why it was working. StreetArticles was a massive hit for a few years there and then Google decided it didn't like catch all style sites (and for good reason).

They want niches sites that exhibit expertise on a topic, these types of sites have always done well and will always continue to do well.

Precisely. The Game changes so quickly and we all all need to realize that, and try your damned HARDEST to not get sidetracked to the next big sounding offer? Go WA whitehat SEO all the way..

Wonderful sharing Kyle,

It is great to hear that all of our hard work and effort that we put in now will reap rewards in our future. I am Thankful that I finally opened my eyes and saw Wealthy Affiliate just over 6 months ago. Although I made my first online sale 6 years ago I learn here every day.

Thank You & Carson for creating Wealthy Affiliate University, to the Community for beings so supportive, knowledgeable and sharing & to my sponsor here at WA who I still to this day do not know for certain who He or She is. (I joined WA thru a silly traffic/social media share site - Saw the WA sign up page and the rest as they say is history)

Merry Christmas Kyle & Entire WA Community of Friends,

Tony

The first sale feels good. Mine was in early 2011 and was only pennies but it proved that it is possible to do.
There have been many more since the first one. Each one accumulates a bit more trust in the process. It gets addictive.
