A Niche is A Group of People Looking for Stuff

Last Update: October 24, 2017

Many folks are confused about the term “niche” and they read into it too much. Because of this, I want to simplify the term niche.

A niche is simply a GROUP of PEOPLE

These people are interested in something, but something specific. The key when choosing this group of people is to be very specific because if you are are too broad, then it is going to be difficult to talk to your audience.

It is like someone walking into a supermarket looking for advice on “how to improve their metabolism”. It is not going to happen and you are not likely to trust the source of the information. Definitely not like the experience you would get if you walked into a store that specialized in metabolism.

Within the online world there are 3.75 BILLION people. That is the biggest marketplace in the world by a long shot so you want to really become an expert within the very specific category you choose.

So, when you sit down and are thinking of what your niche is, think not of this imaginary and confusing word “niche”, think instead of a group of people.

But you don’t want this group to be too broad. That is the worst thing you can do when starting out. I want to give you some examples of a niche that is too broad and then I want to give you some examples of groups of people that are much more "niche" and specific.

A group of people interested in health. Not the best (TOO BROAD).

Health could be just about anything. I constantly see folks at WA trying to start off within the health niche. Well "health" isn't a niche, it's very broad. How do you target people within health? That is not an audience that you can effectively target, rather you need to dig down and get more specific.

A group of people looking to improve their metabolism. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of people over 50 years old looking to lose weight. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of people looking to fix their back problems. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of men that are looking for help for hair loss. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to for this type of help.

A group of people that are looking for low carb diets. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

See where I am going with this? People are not looking for health, they are looking for something much more specific. There are 10,000’s of niches within the broad "health" industry. Tens of thousands of groups looking to accomplish something, looking to buy something, looking for help solving a problem.

All you need to do is target one of these and you have yourself a niche and a very big group of people.

Let’s look at another example...

A group of people interested in babies. Not the best (TOO BROAD).

People interested in “babies” is going to be very difficult to target because it is far too broad. People don’t open Google and search for “babies” online, they search for things that are much more specific.

A group of people looking for organic baby products. That is a targeted niche (but still a little broad).

A group of people looking for organic cloth diapers. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to for these.

A group of people looking for stimulation toys for infants. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for learning apps for babies. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for jogging strollers. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for cribs and information about cribs. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for this.

A group of people looking for classic children's books. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for information about colic babies. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for help.

A group of people looking for information on how to treat babies that are sick. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for help on this.

See how I am narrowing things down to a much more specific group of people? Sure, these are targeted but they are still massive. Millions of people are looking for information, for help, and ultimately are spending billions of dollars online buying things throughout the course of a year and you are going to be able to capitalize on this with your website.

Massive opportunity resides just about everywhere you look within the online world because there are specific groups of people everywhere (also known as niches)

But What About the Niche Competition? Shouldn’t I Be Concerned?

No...No….and NO!

Within each of these more targeted groups of people, there are 1,000’s (sometimes millions) of low competition keywords you can target. What you are learning here at WA also gives you a huge competitive advantage over your competition and is going to help you capitalize on any niche.

And please do remember, there is a reason there are a million of every type of store in the world. There are a million hardware stores. There are a million baby toy shops. Millions of people are buying stuff in the smallest of categories.

To put this into perspective, there are 4 million babies born in the US alone each and every year. That means there are 4 million mom’s and dad’s online looking for information about their new babies, looking for help, looking to buy products or services...and this is where you step in with your niche website.

This could be for organic cloth baby diapers or for information on colic babies...or anything that targets a specific group of people.

I don’t want to blow your mind too much here, but there are 120 million babies born every year globally so the audience that is online and looking for stuff within this niche is much larger than the 4 million people in the US.

Crazy right?

Now, when you go to choose your niche, dig into it a bit and find a more specific group of people. Recognize that there are MILLIONS of people within every niche you can imagine and that is the beautiful part about this Internet “thing”. It is not going anywhere and as every year goes by, there is opportunity absolutely everywhere you look and it only continues to grow.

Now go out there and find your GROUP OF PEOPLE. If you want any help in regards to this or want to get feedback on your ideas for a niche, drop a comment below and we will be more than happy to help you out.

PS. If you still can’t come up with a niche after this and want one that is “chosen” for you already, go through the Affiliate Bootcamp. This is dedicated training as to how to create a successful business within the internet marketing/make money niche. You will love the interactive training over there if you do decide to choose this.

That's really helpful, thank you Kyle. I think I can understand it better now. So, can the name I chose for one of my blog sites (Everyday Holistic) be the overall 'theme' and then I can choose many specific niches to fit in under that umbrella? From 'organic cloth diapers' to 'improve metabolism' to 'work from home' to 'restore hair loss' and anything else that could contribute to a feeling of wellbeing and a holistic lifestyle...?

Thank you for this very informative article. Dance is my passion, but like "health" I figured it was too broad, so I thought to limit it to dancewear, or more specifically, dance shoes. Since I didn't receive any requested feedback on that, I figured it wa
isn't a very good idea.
Now that you mention the Affiliate Bootcamp, above, it sounds like it would be a good idea, although I don't really understand the difference in training between that and the Certification program.
Please help.

Hello Brenda and welcome to Wealthy Affiliate.
I think dance shoes wold be a great niche. I would just try to narrow it down a little more. Ex leather dance shoes or for a specific style of dance.

You can look at other websites in the same niche to get ideas. You can also look at their websites to see what they mat be missing.

Look at their comments to see if their readers have questions. That might be helpful as well.

As for taking the bootcamp, I would plan on doing that after you finished the OEC unless you just can not decide on a niche that you will be able to constantly write quality content on.

The difference on the training is that the OEC course teaches you everything on how to build a successful niche website.

The BootCamp training teaches you how to promote Wealthy Affiliate.

I hope this has helped : )

Good evening everyone my name is Dana. I have a question. I bought a domain name on go daddy a few months ago. I also subscribed to Word Press. But things started to get a little confusing for me. A friend was showing me a lot of online marketing things and because it was overwhelming I kinda of backed off until I ran in to Kyle's information about the guy Zack, regarding the congressional check scam. My question is can I bring that domain name to WA Affiliate's to use when I start to build my website?

Hi
I work for a non destructive testing co. We test equipment in refineries, powerplants chemical plants.
This is necessary to ensure the safe operation of the plants and to avoid unexpected accidents, shut downs and losses.
We have branches in many countries, our services are in great demand. We manufacture our own testing equipment.

In short, I think I can help my company and companies need our services, if I choose this niche.
There is huge scope for our type of business, all over the world.
What do you think.

Hi Lonappan,

If people are searching for this service online, which they probably are, then WA will help you get people in front of what you are offering.

However, if it is more of a local company you are wanting to promote, rather than a product that can be purchased globally, then you may be better focussing on Jay's "local SEO" training. This is more outside of what WA focusses on however Jay does some great training on this which you can find within the 'Live Events' tab to your left and access as a Premium member.

Hope this helps!

First of all, don't panic. You are not writing a book, you are communicating with people in the same way you do all day every day with your friends. You want to approach your blog with this attitude. Imagine you are talking to them about your niche (baby monitors). What would you want to say or do?
Why not have a look at an article I have just written about starting a website. I will PM you the link as it is on my niche site. It talks about doing some research and questions to ask which may help you to look around at other sites to get an idea of what an article should include.
Secondly, I would use the SiteContent platform (through the turquoise button on the left) to start an article. You can write everything in SiteContent before you publish it and even then you can go and edit it.
I suggest you write down some headings, say 5 headings for your article. They might be things like:
Why do you need a baby monitor?
What does a baby monitor do?
What types of monitor are there?
Something like this. They you can write say 200 words under each heading. I'm sure you will soon get the hang of it. It does take a bit of practice when you start out, but you can do it.
I'll PM you the link now. All the best.

I'm just not so sure. A person looking for say info on cribs is likely these days to go straight to Amazon and check reviews (I'd say same with most products). Sick baby info is likely WebMD or some such.
I having a hard time being convinced that the reality isnt that the successful niches are really very small in number because everyone just goes to a big site for their products/info. Maybe later lessons will convince me otherwise but I just don't see it.

(And I'm talking affiliate marketing here, not own store)

You will hear it a lot as you move through the training John - "content is king" and this is what sets your site apart from those others.

WA teaches not only how to write good content, but how to use keywords and SEO to ensure your post comes up on the first page of Google when people are searching those keywords.

So your person puts in best baby cribs in the Google search, and up pops your website with a great blurb which encourages the reader to click on it and check out your stuff.

You post a great article to your Facebook page which gives the reader some quality information they didn't even know they needed about home remedies for a colicky baby (I don't know anything about kids so this could be completely wrong but you get my drift).

Yes the name of the game is to get traffic and as much of it as possible, you don't need to beat Amazon or WebMD you just need to offer what people want and you will be mixing it with the big dogs :)

Hello,
Read there articles and listen to the podcasts:
https://www.authorityhacker.com/small-sites/
https://www.authorityhacker.com/micro-niche-sites/

What a niche site does curate product information and offers in a way that allows people to make purchase. When you buy something, most people don't buy the first thing they see. Rather they do research, and the there is where the niche site comes into play.
If you make helpful, convincing, valuable review, with complete feature description, and user experience, then you will succeed. Check out sites like the www.thewirecutter.com to see how a review is done.
If what you say is they, then how come they are making millions?

Not everyone goes to the big sites, I personally don't if I am looking for something I go to Google.

If there is and article that catches my on the product I look at that, to try and get some background on different makes and models, that's where we come in providing people with information.

I have found a lot of the stuff I buy online to be more expensive on Amazon, the only thing I buy from them are books in Kindle format, because you get your book instantly.

The picking of my niche has been a stumbling block for me every time. But I think I have decided. I would really appreciate any feedback.

Jeeps: I love them and I just got my first one. Anyone that owns a Jeep will tell you that not only is it the fun you can have, but it's the amount of accessories you can buy.

I think that just Jeeps is too broad, but I am not sure. Jeep accessories is ok...and Jeep Wrangler Accessories is very specific. But is it too specific? Now I am second guessing! Geez. Happens every time!

Help!

If you are stuck on a niche, check Alex Becker's videos on YTB. There are loads of resources available for niche research.

Jeep accessories is OK, if people buy those things online. I don;t know, I drive a cheap car, and buy accessories from the supermarket.
Jeeps is not a god niche. Nobody buys expensive car online.
Reply

Hey Jessica,

You can definitely create a site about Jeep accessories. Many people want to know the best Jeep accessories, where to get them, how to install them, and anything related to this.

So there's a lot of traffic potential here (reviews, comparisons, best of posts, how to's, guides, general articles about Jeep accessories).

You could also consider narrowing this down a bit. For example: 'Jeep off-road accessories/ mods' where you have a site all about the many ways you can modify your rig for off road adventures.

This is just one idea off the top of my head, but you can definitely break this niche down and come up with many great ideas.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions going forward.

Cheers

Never heard of Barrett Jackson Auctions, E-bay Motors, or Auto Trader? Jeeps often make all 3 sites and sell for a good sum. Jeep is also not a luxury brand, and the accessories are typically ordered online by the shops that sell them to you via their distributors. It's a great niche if you look at the research instead of the money in your pocket.

So I *think* I found my niche. I am a homeschooling mom, and also a previous elementary school teacher. Would homeschooling resources (books, materials, products) be a good niche? Is it too broad?
Also, is it possible to do the get started program for my own niche AND the affiliate bootcamp to promote WA at the same time?

I wouldn't have thought home schooling was too broad, in fact quitre a good one and as for the last part I would have thought a perfect fit.

Hey everyone,

I'm wanting to help women that deal with pmdd (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder). Is this to broad? I could go a little more specific and discuss the depression side of it but that feels to limiting to me. Pmdd is the reason I feel so strongly about striving to live authentically because for years I spend every month feeling like a different person that it really took its tole on me. I'm not trying to promote a cure but simply coach people to manage it more effectively.

You need to think about a few things ahead:
1) Is the niche competitive? (we can talk in private if you want on how to reasearch this) But basically:
Think of what KW you want to rank for. EX: "Best cure for pmdd"
Type them in Google, and see what you get. Are there lots of sites on that? Are there big blogs? How many search results?

2) Are there things to review and sell? (I presume natural remedies for pmdd, meds, etc)

3) Are those the kind of products people will buy from the internet? Or do they have a special status (meds with prescription, recommendation from doctor, consultations, etc)? You need to think of these things before you invest in your site.
For, example people don't usually buy food online. They may order it. Maybe under special circumstance.... I don't know.

I learned through experience that before I start a niche I have to do lots, lots, lots of research.
Since you are a starter, take a week to learn from youtute on niche research. I recommend "lazy ass stoner", "alex becker", "doug cunnington".

Have fun! :)

I think that's absolutely brilliant because I have suffered from hormonal swings my whole life and can totally identify with feeling different ever cycle. I personally feel we get no support as women from conventional medicine and I would be very interested in learning about how to naturally balance the body. I don't think it's too broad at all . Because your homing in one one area. Too broad would be female hormonal problems in general. I don't know much about the disorder but sounds like I might fall into the category . Hope this helps and good luck with the journey!

Hi there, Everyone! I am looking for some input on my niche and appreciate any advice you all have to offer.
I am thinking about targeting people who are looking for energy efficient appliances for high performance homes. My husband is a high performance builder, and we have noticed the need for sites dedicated to showcasing energy efficient products. We are currently building our own house and have spent hours delving into sites for ceiling fans, washers and dryers, dishwashers, etc., to pull out the ones that will qualify for energy efficient incentives.
I would love to start a site with the larger appliances like the ones I mentioned above, but am wondering if that is too broad and if I should narrow it down to one appliance instead (like ceiling fans...I already found the affiliate programs for the top energy efficient fans.) I am also not sure if I should specifically mention "high performance homes" or if that would narrow my audience down too much by excluding people who are just searching for energy efficient appliances, but not necessarily for a "high performance home."

Look at your competition or and CSR in Jaxxy for the main niche. If there are not many blogs in the category and your SEO score is above 80 you should rank nicely. Individual post about appliances and appliance types will help you rank for your main keywords.

I think drop the high performance homes, you could always do a series of articles on the appliances for those within your niche of energy efficient appliances anyway.

I’d keep it to all appliances to start, you might find as you build out the site you tend to go more in one direction, these sites seem to have a mind of their own as they grow and develop.

Sounds like a great little niche to me.

You can talk about clothing that upon wearing could help a lady lose weight, diet supplements and meds a woman should take, perhaps what types of exercise machines are safe for a lady who had just given birth to work out on.

I hope that this helps you out. :)

Please let me know if you need more help brainstorming ideas. :D

Hey,
Great idea, ... an intersect between WEIGHT LOSS - PREGNANCY.
Lots of products to review, home gym, supplements, clothing that make you slim, baby products. And you can branch off.

Just one thing to remember: I know that the weight loss niche is very competitive, so make sure you don't drift too far in that direction. Maybe insist more on pregnancy exercises and diets.

Also, I like that in this niche, you can make up a lot of info-graphics, which will drives your traffic, and increase the chances of other people sharing your content on twitter / Facebook.

Also, think about this;
What else can help looks, aside from fashion and weight loss?
Yoga for pregnancy,
Breathing exercise for pregnant women,
Jogging strollers,
Best massages oils during pregnancy

:)) ... OK, I am already drifting too far into my kinky fantasies, so I better stop...

I wish all the best. Make lots of $$$$$.

Hello, try type in Google some of the keyword that your niche might type in:
"best hand carved gifts"
"carved wooden pens" .... etc

You want to see how much competition there is.
I saw that on carved pens at least, there are no blogs. Mostly only gift shops, product companies, etc. No major blogs.
SO that is a good signs, it means your niche is open for business. You do need to rank good, and low competition will help you.

Hi Stephanie,

'Hand carved gifts' or 'hand carved gift ideas' is an awesome niche idea. There are people searching for this and there is plenty of room for a new site in this space.

Writing is going to be something you'll be doing in order to get traffic. So you want to be thinking in terms of "how can I help people who are looking for hand carved gifts?".

So you could write about the different types of hand carved gifts, how to make them, where to get good materials, you could review and compare products along with many other great ideas.

As you progress through the training you will learn how to find good topics to write about and how to promote these products.

So you're on the right track and you've got everything you need here to make it work.

Let me know if you have any questions going forward :) Cheers

yes, I suggest you start one. No blogs = no competition. A lot of stores = lots of possibilities for affiliates.
You can write about wood carving, wood painting, you can review other people's products and write product recommendations (others than for your own). You can explore Totemic arts, Iconography ... I don't now what adjacent interests people in this niche have.

You can build up a more general topic by using laser targeted post, so the main theme of your site can be far more open than the post you fill it with. Follow the practices of finding low hanging fruit and you will crush those other sites iin a couple years. Then they will be questioning their approach as they wonder how you are beating them.

A niche is a group of people. There are enough people around the world in search of something that entreps can provide . We have to narrow in on their specific needs and fill the demand. Niche: Daily skincare for women: 20s and beyond.

Hi. I'm new here, too, so get another opinion besides mine. You're on the right track. Narrowing your niche down a little more might not hurt though. Skin care for women in their 20s and beyond includes all adult women. So, your current niche may be broader than you think. What if you went for either an older group, or a younger group with their respective issues? Regardless, your idea sounds great! You're welcome. I'm learning, too, so ask others. I hear one's niche needs to be tied to search engine keywords at some point. That's how you reach your audience. So, maybe you can still speak to your desired audience so long as you get the right keywords to generate traffic. Like Ozopps says-- "20 and beyond" is a large niche. But you may be able to work that to your advantage if you find the right search keywords. Again, I'm learning, too. So, take my words with a grain of salt.

Hey Tim,
I want to say that the final decision will have to rest with you after
much research on your part. Noone can make the decision for
you, but Kyle's suggestion about the Affiliate Bootcamp might
present different options that would appeal to you. It wouldn't
hurt to take a look and see then how you feel about it.

I have just finished the part of the starter course that hits on finding your niche, so forgive me if this question is asked and answered somewhere further down the line. But, if I choose a niche like "organic cloth diapers" from the examples above, it seems like there is a finite amount of information upon which to generate content. If I choose something that specific, is it expected that I will keep writing about diapers, or is "diapers" considered a micro-niche within a blog with broader interests?

Sub niche may include.
Origin of cloth diapers
What is Organic Cloth
what are organic cloth diapers
why use organic cloth diapers
advantages of cloth diapers
organic versus non organic cloth diapers

Running additional searches opens more ideas.

Thank you for your prompt reply! I think I understand there are aspects to explore within each niche. I guess I'm wondering how much content I need to generate for each niche I begin to explore. It seems that eventually, I will run out of things to say on a given topic. At that point I can pick another niche, but do I need to keep writing on the original topic to keep it profitable, or does it become self-sustaining?

Hello WA'ers! Like many of you, I also have a lot more than one interest... Health and wellbeing (very broad, I know) being one of them. I have had a blog in the past and just named it halinasophie (my username), I was just wondering if it would be worthwhile naming a website the same? hainasophie is kind of my brand. it is me being vulnerable and sharing my experiences. I am my brand, I guess. I'm hoping to educate people on many different aspects of health and share many tools including what has helped me overcome a serious illness. Under my name I'll be blogging about my experiences and sharing and promoting products/recipes I've used and know of. So I guess my question is, can naming a website your actual name be a good way to go?

Thank you very muchly :)

Excellent question! And not a straight answer as it has pros and cons...

If you're planning on potentially selling your website in the future...building it around you is not a good idea as it's not easily transferrable. But if this is not a website you see yourself selling and want to build a strong following...then I think using your name as the brand is a great idea ;)

I think I have narrowed it down to marketing to a group of people who want to educate their children.

Like maybe advertising educational toys and learning apps and books and stuff like that.

Any suggestions or feedback on if that would go well?

I am a single Mom of a two-year-old and I absolutely love learning new things with my son and I’m always on the hunt for some new way or app to teach him with.

Hello Community,

Working on my niche and I've narrowed it to three:

1. Phone chargers (wall and car chargers)
2. Public speaking. (I've been involved with toastmasters, and have read many books on this topic.)
3. Dog training with a clicker.

Do any of you have a recommendation on any of these?

Thanks,

Tyler

Hello Tyler;
From reading a lot of posts people but out. There are a lot of different dog enthusiasts that are around, the dog training sounds good.

Phone chargers are not going to bring you much, unless some of your posts and sell in bulk. They are too cheap and can be gotten anywhere.

Public Speaking is also very good, but don't limit it to toastmasters unless they have a substantial amount of product.

Any niche is good as long as you are knowledgeable about it. A great hobby would also be great.

Best of Luck

I'm just getting started and looking for some input on finding my niche. In a broad sense, my I want to be in the health/wellness niche but realize I need to narrow that down. More specifically, I'd like to focus on "clean" living as in food, lifestyle habits, body products etc. As I'm already part of a health/wellness business, I'd like to incorporate what I already have and use into my niche and create my own brand online using these products plus my own ideas.

I've created a couple of courses with this niche in mind, one being a 30 day Total Body Detox and the other is centered around emotional well-being using essential oils. I feel very passionate about both of these topics and wonder if there is a niche idea that would incorporate them both or if I should choose just one. I've got some other ideas along these lines as well but that just adds to the struggle. :)

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Cheryll;
Instead of making 2 websites for now, just go back and forth with posts on them both incorporating the Total Body Detox and the essential oils. This way you will have a better way to incorporate some of the clean living and food products.

If you make 2 websites at this time, people have to be able to find each one separately.

LianaM,
Being a mom myself with all the kids out of the house I understand how challenging it can be for your to narrow it down. I remember being at a conference when my children were little and at that time I was a stay at home, homeschool mom with a chronically ill son who was in intensive care about every 3 months until he was 10 yrs. old. Everyone in the room was introducing themselves and their very professional business title. When it came around to me the only thing I could say "I'm just a mom" I was horrified and terribly embarrassed because I simply had no identity outside of that life. Then a wonderful man introduced himself to me and my life changed, he reminded me that being a mom is one of the most incredible and important jobs there are.

My question to you:
What do you 'love' about being a mom? What makes you happy and move to a different dance?

Start writing those things down and your answer will be there.

Dishes?
Laundry?
Sure you can write about those things and be an expert at it.
But what makes you move to the beat of a different drum that you can write about for years to come?
Sometimes those things can come out of hurt, loss, or hardship too.

You'll do just fine. After all, you're a mom! :-)

Enjoy the lessons, the system, and the wonderful community here at WA.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you,

answering your question.
What do you 'love' about being a mom? What makes you happy and move to a different dance?
I love how I am their role model, and how they look up to me. It scares me because I there are many challenges and mistakes that go along the way. One thing I know for sure is when I take care of my self (self love, fun, play, read, anything that is only for me) is when I am there for my children. That is when my family is in harmony.

Would love to connect with you more

Thank you

The other niche is about a book that I am still writing which is about inner peace and joy.
Another niche I am interested about is at home fitness, or at home workouts.
I hope you can help me to narrow them down. I want to create one web page in the beginning until I get results before I spend time on two or three web pages.

Yes, I think you have a good target there as well. You have so much you could give new people a lot of knowledge about as well as doing reviews where one product outshines another, what tools do you need to taking care of the horse and then what about the things you need as a rider. Awesome niche and I wish you the best.

I have a similar niche. A dog showed up on our property a year ago and we ended up keeping her. So many things came up that I didn't know about. It was certainly much different than when I was a child with a dog. I figured there might be a lot of people rescuing dogs, we have a major problem with unwanted pets in AL, that would have the same questions. I decided to narrow my topics to health, treat recipes and reviews of dog related products. I could probably narrow my niche to just one of those.

So, with your site, I wouldn't try to cover everything. I'm particularly not focusing on puppies or senior dogs, but there is plenty in between. Pick a few topics that you are most interested in, have knowledge about and will enjoy writing about.

Hi everyone, I have two ideas in mind for my niche and need your help in choosing one,the first is athletic clothing,do you think its to broad or should I narrow in more on one specific sport, and the second is home exercise equipment and accessories,or should I take out the accessories part of it?
Reply

I would narrow the clothing down maybe to a particular type, using Jaaxy keyword research to find a type of athletic clothing that has low competition but get sufficient search volume.
The same with home exercise equipment, narrow that with keyword research.
Best,

Andrew.
Reply
CarolMeador Premium
Hello, ECharles.

I don't know which one would be better off hand without doing research on Jaaxy for either of these ideas.

I think I would choose one sport to begin with if you do athletic clothing. Suggest you use Jaaxy to find the one with the least competition because I imagine there are a lot of websites targeting this audience.

Without having done Jaaxy research, I think I would choose home exercise equipment because it might have less competition than the athletic clothing. But that is just a guess, and you would need to research both to make an informed decision on which would be best.

If you choose home exercise equipment, you could begin with that and branch out to include accessories after you get the basic content done. That's what I'm doing with my ballroom dance website. I have so many different ways I can go with it, and you will probably find the same thing with this niche when you start doing your research for posts.

Regardless of which niche you choose, I suggest you keep your domain name so that you can add sidelines as you grow.

I'll be curious to know which one you decide on. Good luck with whichever direction you take.

I created a niche, but I am being lead to believe that it's too broad. Here it is:

"I want to help people that are stuck in a pattern of constant
frustration to find valid solutions to issues straight-forward, easy,
and in only a few steps."

Assisting others would be done by providing information to them on easy-to-use products and well-vetted services that would help with their important questions, situations, and problems in an upbeat, honest manner.

Basically, I know that there are people that want real answers and true solutions to resolve their issues, not just temporary fixes.

What do you all think?

Hi Joey,

Narrow this down to a specific product or service.....

"I want to help people that are stuck in a pattern of constant
frustration to find valid solutions to ???(what exactly...hair do, health, toe nails, aging ???) straight-forward, easy,
and in only a few steps."

...and that could be your niche IF you also have product or service specific for ONE issue.

Hope that helps a bit

Thank you for the clarification. I was feeling "stuck" there for a little while!

P.S. When you said "that could be your niche IF you also have product or service specific for ONE issue" are you implying that I should have a product or service already in mind for my niche?

In my humble opinion, yes. Or, to be more precise, you should do a bit a research on how you can monetize, get a basic idea...not necessary the particular product(s) or service(s) at this point, but knowing that there are indeed 'thing' that people will spend their money on.

Good choice on a niche. There are a lot of people out there looking for help. But, that is a huge subject.

What kind of help would you be offering? Physical? Emotional? Professional? Construction? Crafts? Food? The list is endless. And it would be impossible to cover it all in one website.

My personal opinion is that you should narrow it down to a sub niche of some kind. Something that you know about and enjoy.

Good luck with your future. Work hard and you will be successful.

Should our websites or online business have to be equally so narrow? And if so, should we be choosing a domain name that reflects that narrow niche, e.g., Organic Baby Diapers dot com? Or could our niche be broader, say, health and fitness, but then be very specific (narrower) in each blog post we publish to that site, e.g., boosting metabolism with a protein breakfast?

In my case, when I first started into affiliate marketing (with another training program), I chose health and fitness and a domain name and business name of Health Nut Unlimited. I have since moved the domain name and website over to WA, but haven't resumed being active on it. I am wondering if I need to just abandon it and start over with a much narrower niche and domain name, or if I can maintain the site and domain name I have and make sure my various posts under different categories of health and fitness have very narrow topics with keywords targeted to that group of people.

Whew! Sorry for the long winded-question, but it's something I've been struggling with for some time. In the meantime, I am moving forward with Affiliate Bootcamp and a website for that. Thanks!

hi there. To start off,you do not want your niche to be broad, your Domain name should also reflect your niche. In your post, you can be broad, but keep in mind, to make sure that it reflects your Domain. Ex. talking about cars, when your Domain name reflects Health and Fitness. moving on, I like the name of your website. I would not change it. I would work on it, focus on the niche, the keywords using Jaaxy, and post related to your niche. Most importantly use the training here at WA to make your website awesome.

Cheers,

Hey Ninah,

Your niche does not need to be too narrow, not at all. But there is a limit as to how broad you would go. So 'health and fitness' is very broad, whereas 'natural ways to lose weight' is more balanced, without going too narrow.

Your domain name should reflect the topic of your niche, but it doesn't have to be word for word or keyword matched. Something 'brandable' is always a good way to go. This is something that makes sense and that your audience will remember.

As far as your content goes, you can absolutely break it down into the most targeted, low competition keywords you can think of. As long as there is traffic, and it's relevant to your niche, you can target the keyword within your content. So for the 'natural ways to lose weight' niche example, there are easily 10,000's of highly targeted relevant keywords/ topics you can write about. Including product reviews, how to's, guides, general content and anything else relevant.

Hope this helps :)

Yes, it does help a lot, Tim! I think I'm fine on my domain name, even though it broadly suggests my niche being health. I'll focus on content around competitive keywords. At this point in time, I really just need to focus on creating any kind of content! :-) Thanks for your input.

Great video and explanation of breaking down an area. I have been thinking about a couple of ideas. Having a business in the country, we are always looking for options for wireless security cameras, so that is one area. My wife is also thinking weight loss for women over 50yo. What are peoples thoughts? We have also ran into challenges finding cloths for our pre-teen girl, that may be an idea.. she is young but tall...

I would love some feedback on the specificity of the following niches and what other tools I can use to validate the income potential of each as well as the strength of the keywords to target. Lastly, is it feasible to pursue a variety of niches at once? Kidpreneur, children's bedding, activities for nyc kids, sheet protectors, childrens headbands

Hello Brandi, I am not sure which Course you are currently covering, but Course #3, is where you will learn a lot about Affiliates and how to monetize you site(s). For keywords there is the keyword tool and Jaaxy that can help you with that. I am not sure how knowledgeable you are about online marketing. If you are very knowledgeabe and this is not your first time around then you can pursue as many niches as your time can support. If however you are like many of us just starting out, then it is recommended that you start with one niche, develop that and gain experience. Then you can branch out.

Hey, I have a strong interest in dance, specifically ballet. I was hoping for some input on an idea. The idea or niche is providing a place that have ballet shoes specifically pointe shoes, and where to find them. I remember always searching and searching and I could never find one site that had more than a couple options or enough information to find the shoe I needed. I am open to any input anyone may have.

Hi everyone, I seem to keep circling and circling around ethical shoebrands and strangely enough even before I joined WA I stumbled on one that got me so excited I just found their site again and now I see something else they have added in their range that I am raving about. can I become a specialised site for ethical shoe brands for those who are mindful about what they put on their feet? Even ethical products but specifically shoes to start with. Is this a good idea I am on fire and passionate about it.
Reply

That is an excellent idea. Were you thinking of having a website about ethical products and starting with shoes or just on ethical shoes?
Reply
SarahJJones Premium
Well I wasn't sure, as it said in training not to make niche too broad I thought a site about ethical products would give me lots to talk about but if I specialised in shoes specifically I could research all different ranges of ethical shoes?
Reply
MMoncur Premium
Hi I think when they say not to make your niche too broad they meant not doing a site on shoes (which leaves it too open. In your case ethical shoes are different.) Also, doing a generic site on different products would be too open but your site is targeting a specific set of persons looking for ethical products. This leaves you the opportunity to discuss ethical shoes, bags, clothes, tool, books, soaps, candies...the list can go on and on. Hope that helps!

Thinking of my niche, I know fitness is way to broad but I used to travel every week for work. It's hard to stay motivated and always hit the gym (especially crappy hotel gyms) while on the road. What about a niche of fitness for the travelling people. Things like body weight workout programs that can be done in your hotel room and associated products?

My most favourite football club is Manchester United FC. So my niche would be Manchester United FC fans. Another Niche I would want to have is Real Madrid FC fans.
Another Niche would come under health and wellnes in which I would focus on persons trying to lose weight through exercise, especially losing/burning their Belly Fat.

Not getting scammed by hitting coaches
Top hitting aids on the market

I'm just trying to make sure I'm on the right path to finding a niche.

I don't think softball coaching focusing on hitting would
be too broad for a niche although others may disagree.

You'll be writing a load of content on whatever
niche you choose so don't narrow it so far down
that you run out of ideas after 3 or 4 articles!

The other ideas you've mentioned would make
great topics for articles within that niche.

Hi there.

For success, don't skip the niche research process. Meaning if you don't have that figured out, then don't rush this part. It's ok that this part takes a little time. You will reap the benefits of a solid niche plan down the road.

Continue reading, researching and learning everything you can about niche research until you have a good handle on your target audience (i.e. niche). Your interests are not really the same thing as a niche. You should choose how you are going to help people within a market segment, about something you are interested in.

Here are two good articles that show how to research niche ideas and break them down into smaller focuses. Good luck!

HI -- I have at least 4 different ideas -- and I'm wondering whether folks generally jump into a few at once (like putting up multiple websites right away) or take it one at a time, in developing niches and websites. I guess this might depend on learning/implementation styles of each of us, but I would be curious if folks find better success focusing on one idea at a time, to completion.

Hello,
As my husband and I do this as a team effort, we began with two websites. He jumped into building his website with a niche that was personal to him. I decided for the Affiliate website (affiliate bootcamp). We found them easy enough to set up and are ready to set up another website, and have found managing them seems relatively easy.
Again we do this as a team effort. He handles the research while, I am in charge of the websites themselves.

To be honest I started like 10 websites at the same time when I first joined WA. 9 of them failed and I suspect the main reason was because I simply couldn't give enough attention/time to all of them.

At this point I would much rather work on a single project or 2 projects at most.

I definitely have to do something with film related. Duplicating a film costume or prop? i know there are companies that make costumes. Not crap but nice stuff. I myself put together an authentic Indiana Jones outfit, parts came from all around the world. In my photo I am wearing the coat and hat.
Holy shit this is just coming to me now! This might be perfect. 8 years ago for Christmas I Assembled Bell's outfit from one of the Twilight movies for my Daughter. I found out exactly where the filmmakers bought Her Coat, pants and shirt from. The exact make, model and color. The film makers made her hat. So I found a Woman in Florida that made duplicates of that Hat. Funny asking the question I answered at the same time.

One way I can think of is to become an Amazon affiliate and to sell the movies and DVDs you promote. There are probably other ways, too, but this is all I could come up with off the top of my head.

You could start an email list where in return you send these people recommendations every month or so on new release movies or what is new on Netflix etc. to drive return traffic to your site where you can sell affiliate items through Amazon or something. Once you establish traffic and content you can have people advertise on your website. Just ideas, I am new to the game as well! Best of luck.

Amazon would be a good way on a regular basis. I guess I would be competing with those Red Box outlets by the time it was available to own. I was thinking of how to make this pay while the films were still in the theaters.

it's always best to break things down and get as specific as possible while still making sure you have plenty of content to cover. Much easier to diversify from one thing then to go down from something general.

Book reviews - fiction or non-fiction, male or female audience, self-help or entertainment, high cost vs low cost...

What you are really after is a small section of the public that is pretty specific with a problem you can solve...

the easiest way is to create the ideal audience by listing things like age, sex, location, career, family, house, backyard, income, hobbies, interests. And then getting inside their heads to find out the pain points they have with their lives. What are the biggest problems and how can I find solutions for these people that will get them to buy my recommendations...

I say easiest but that is a bit more complicated than the word implies :-)

Hi there, my take on this is to write it in the positive rather than the negative. Shyness can be viewed as a negative and you will be wanting people to take action - finding your voice is a more positive way to frame it. People who are shy already know they are shy. They will be wanting to know from you what do to about it.
Have you read "Quiet - the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking" by Susan Cain? It is a great read.

What are people shy?
What makes them shy?
How does shyness affect their lives?

These questions are traffic generating questions that people ask in Google every single day.

Use your ebook as guide to help 'answer' questions shy people have. Later on they WILL comment and tell you what to write about because you actively help them by ANSWERING their questions.

Make sense?

With the hammer analogy how many people ask questions out loud, not many since they can 'Google' and get an answer. An answer that came form your site and was ranked on page 1.

At least that's how I make my commissions. My site answers peoples questions and problems. They in turn comment back and want more help.

More help means more potential sales.

Mind you, I am recording the ingredients from each cream, just to compare the natural and/organic ingredients. I really want to develop one that will work well for people with sensitive skin.

I have sensitive skin, and many of the products I sample does not agree to my skin type. Now you can see where I'm trying to go with this.

Went through it when I was younger, and knowing how to avoid razor bumps as a man. Had to do a lot of research to work with what God gave me. It is a billion dollar business, especially for products that work with Black and Brown skin. I would be careful with the use of the word “Nutra, and if you use it check to make sure it is not copyrighted. Salve tends to sound medicinal. If that is what your products will be great, if not then I would look for another word. Both sound good. How about Organic Sensitive SkinCare?

Hello Community:
I just read the article on a niche is a group of people and I have a question. What is the difference between starting a niche website like the ones in the baby sector like cloth diapers or jogging strollers, and what Jessica Alba did which is start The Honest Company, which also specialzes in a range of baby products? How can one scale their store to achieve a business like hers?

Hey Letticia,

WA teaches you to monetize your blog by promoting other products like the one from The Honest Company. So you don't worry about creating a product or worrying about customer support. Your only job is to write content to help people find the right products or services for a given problem within a niche. So for instance you can write reviews on products that honest company sells and other baby related products. Because there are so many baby related products out there you can have content for a very long time.

Whereas a site like Honest Company is the product creator and their job is to create products and support them. They may have some content development as well. But they don't really make money by being an affiliate. They may have affiliates to help promote their products.

Eventually you can create your own products and support them if you want. But most people find that affiliate marketing is an easier way to make money and manage. WA doesn't really do a lot in terms of ecommerce where you're setting up your blog to sell products. But I think it's something they will explore in the future. But for now being an affiliate is a great starting point. Once you've built up your site, traffic and following you can easily switch from promoting someone else products to your own. I hope this helps.

I am no expert but the cloth diapers and jogging strollers are a niche of the bigger picture which is Honest company products they sell. I would think you can start with the niche to gain experience and build out your business as your gain experience and confidence in your niche
You could start with the bigger picture and have a plan to fill the scope of the bigger enterprise the choice is yours
hope this helps

I am a wellness practitioner and wanted my niche to be in wellness because that is what I am passionate and already knowledgable about. I realize that it perhaps too broad but I have several sub-niches I wanted to write about on a blog type of website: Yoga, Holistic Products, Exercise/Fitness, Nutrition, Essential Oils, Self-Care, and Self-Development. Should I narrow in on just one sub-niche? I have a hard time thinking about what problem I would be solving or what products I would promote in just one of these sub-niches.

If you want to narrow your niche down you need to think of who your target audience be. Wellness is too broad because it involves so much. Even though you chose sub-niches I think they are too broad but if you chose any one of them and catered it to your target audience, any of them would work. Like with yoga you could focus on beginners, nutrition you could try women in their 20's, essential oils that heal, etc. The products you can promote are anything relevant to that niche which you can write reviews about. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for responding! I have given it more thought and am trying to brainstorm more on choosing an audience. I love the yoga for beginners idea! :)

Great Training. To find a niche just simply think of maybe 3 subjects in your life that excite you or that you are currently interested in,reading about, watching youtube videos on or casually talking to people about - That's it you've found your niche. We rarely look or talk about very board things,we normally over a period of time delve deeper in our interested subjects because we naturally want to know more, find solutions too etc. Thats your niche!!! Go for it.

Great advice. I'm still a little unsure of the difference between taking the basic training here at WA and choosing a niche and working with that, as opposed to going the affiliate marketing bootcamp route.
Let me see if I can clarify this... I choose a niche. I set up a website and I add content. I may have a company and their product that I'm already affiliated with but I want to market it through my website instead of having physical spas to introduce the products. There's that.
Now, how is that different than doing the Affiliate Bootcamp method? This is a difficult question to explain and ask so I apologize for any possible confusion. I'm hoping someone or Kyle even, will figure out what I need to know. Are they different? Are they mixed together? Can I have a website of mine selling products from another company I belong to and market that, or do I need to go only through Amazon? I don't know exactly what trail to follow. Please help.

You really should start with the Green Banner on the left first and then do the Affiliate Bootcamp. It seems like you have a great idea how this works, but you do not want to miss anything. Not all the lessons are the same in both. Best of Luck in the New Year.

If you click on the green button you will go through the training for building your own niche website. If you the black affiliate bootcamp button you will be training to promote Wealthy Affiliate and getting new members. I have not taken the affiliate bootcamp yet but if you have your own niche already chosen, I recommend going and building your own niche website. The training is somewhat simple and if you get stuck, just ask questions like you did here and you'll have your answer before long. I wish you much success!

I honestly don't know what type of niche I am passionate or interested in. I have done many things over the years; I played soccer when i was younger, I know how to play the violin, I watch anime on a continues basis, yet for some reason I don't know where to start, I was thinking of violin, but I think that is to broad. I was also thinking of letting people know about Christ, for I get so much Joy from it, yet I think this to is to broad. So I don't honestly know where to start or even pick for a niche.

Did you enjoy soccer? Was there a particular part that you were good at or enjoyed? You may be able to narrow your niche down, as Kyle did, by looking at skills, drills, conditioning, etc. For the violin, perhaps violin sales, or self-teaching, or something like that. Like they say, find an audience and help them solve a problem (generalization). Good luck!

Give yourself a bit more time in researching. You don't need to jump into anything right away, but if you can write down the four topics you've mentioned (soccer, violin, anime, christ), take time to focus on each of those. Anime for example, is quite popular - do you want to sell anime art, movies, books, classes on how to do anime, or as the tutorial suggested ... google affiliate programs + anime. Try for the other topics too.

best of luck!

thank you for your advise, It took me awhile to think on what i wanted to be my niche on, even though i played the violin, its be ages since I played and just recently I am starting to play the violin again and am being retrained on how to play. I looked through the internet on things about the violin and was thinking of at least starting with a niche on tuning a violin, however I want to know if this is a good start or if its to broad.

Maybe you can do well with anime as your niche. If you've watched a lot of anime you can do review blogs on them. And then recommend great anime to watch. This will cater a lot of kids mostly. And that's how you can monetize your blog. Check out the anime list of Amazon - there are tons of them. You can even recommend anime comics and anime dolls-toys-figures. That'll will be a whole lot of fun for you because you love what you're doing.
All the best!

A niche is something that you feel passionate about, something that you could see yourself talking about or writing about. You do have some likes already, think about specific things about that, for instance the violin do you want to help people learn how to play it?, where to buy them?, people find where to collect them?, always ask the 5W's, Who, what, where, when, why of each niche, this is something that you really don't need to over think, you already know your niche, you just haven't realized it yet. Also let God know he just might give you a nudge in the right direction.
Don't over think it!

Ok.....so I do t think I will have a problem finding a "Niche" as my list is in front f me but more the problem of deciding on one lol (although gonna go see how far I can break two of these down such as Coffee (which would be too broad I'm guessing ) and only question is what if you can fit two niches together or is that something to look at later on down the road?
Reply

I'd suggest narrowing it down to one, then either developing the other later as a separate topic, if it would be profitable to do, or bring it in under the first, to draw more people in. Just a thought. Best of luck!

This helps a lot and gives a good glimpse of what kind of training is available here and I see even more that Wealthy Affiliate differs from all other Affiliate programs and systems where their main focus is to have you market what they tell you to market or if they let you choose your niche, they do not go into detail to show you things such as the complexity of what a niche is as you do here. I am liking Wealthy Affiliate more and more with each step I take.

You are right, Wealthy Affiliate is a good place to be with the top training that is thorough and easy to learn. The more you become involved, the better your experience will be. Feel free to ask questions as you proceed through the training because we are here to help you succeed. Best of luck to you!

This was a great blog to read. I am a pediatric ICU nurse and so I'm definitely interested, or so I thought, in some form of health but after reading this blog I realize that "health" is way to broad of a niche. I'm gonna think about it but now I'm thinking something with babies. Maybe breastfeeding and breast pumps/supplies. For mothers having hard time increasing milk supply, marketing product that increase milk production. Or market a product that helps you loose your belly fat after pregnancy. Now that I have a better understanding of what a niche is, there's so much. I guess none of the above are a bad idea. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance for any input given!

Hi Source! Understanding a niche could be anything that a group of people are interested in. Narrow it down some more, right now its too wide open. Also try focusing on food that helps women. Give more milk, eating healthier. I love the niche you have picked. Breast feeding as you know is very important for the development of the baby. I pray this helps you. Looking forward to sharing with you soon. Much success to you!!

Being that the health niche is too broad does not mean it cannot be profitable. On the contrary it provides a lot of sub niches you can target. I provide many such sub niche ideas in the training at the link below.

Hello everyone, so I am very interested in cryptocurrency. I narrowed it down to my favorite platform which is "bitconnect" then I narrowed it down from one of the three ways to invest which is Lending BCC (BitConnect Coin). How does this sound to you guys? it's not a product its more of a service.

Thank you in advance!

If you are providing a service, how would you monetize it? Would you offer your services as value and promote products or sell your services as your product?

Hey there,

I am also doing a website on Cryptocurrency. However, my focus is more on the technological side like what the blockchain is instead of investing. But I am curious on what you mean by more of a service? Are you guiding your readers on how to invest with Bitconnect Coin? If so, are you going to be an affiliate with them by promoting their site?

@Mstanley5 Sounds a good idea. Centialy a niche. A few friends of mine have started to invest in 'Ripple' due to its high volume and recent uptake. Might be worth considering also.

I think it’s a great niche with global currencies merging, debts being forgiven and the world markets at our fingertips.

There is a strand in on online group I’m in about small businesses taking cryptocurrencies...almost nobody takes it. Small biz has no idea how to take it and helping small biz owners tease this out may be s good niche.

Just an idea. I know I’m clueless on this!!

Considering my home city as a niche. I live in a popular city for
tourism with around 1.6 m visitors per year. I spend most of my life in around the city and there's plenty of material for endless articles. I'm a keen photographer and would love to use my own photography on the site. I'm thinking there would be ways to monetise the site through travel affiliate programs while possibly increasing sales and bookings for my photography business as well. Does this sound like a reasonable idea for a niche?

How about creating a travel guide? Or even enlisting a few friends and starting a guide service? Also, your pictures might be a commodity that local businesses and organizations might buy for their advertising. Even reach out to travel or advertising agencies. The idea has lots of great opportunities! Good luck!

Hello SJSD,
yes your ideas seem reasonable for a niche. If you conduct a google search on photography you can see all of the other things people are searching for in relation to this. This is called the alphabet soup technique which Kyle explains in one of his many videos. Do the same with tourism.
There are plenty of travel websites that have affiliate programs which you can join and add to your site too.
Look through as many courses on the Certification tab on the left for clarity.
Hope this helps,
Aaron.

Thanks Aaron I really appreciate your advice! I've been having a play around with the keyword tools and on Google for ideas
and checking out sites that I would be competing with.
I've started the first course on the certification tab but
have spent a few hours diving in and out of various sections
trying to get my head around things I was unsure of. :)

Hello,
yes there is a lot of information here within WA and like me you probably want to get straight into making the money however its not as easy as it seems.
Take the time to work through the courses and look at the training videos. I still have to go back over some from time to time to ensure I am doing the right thing.
Also, if you have any questions feel free to ask in the live chat. There is always someone here who will answer your question and give you some good advice.
Aaron.
