Many folks are confused about the term “niche” and they read into it too much. Because of this, I want to simplify the term niche.

A niche is simply a GROUP of PEOPLE.

These people are interested in something, but something specific. The key when choosing this group of people is to be very specific because if you are are too broad, then it is going to be difficult to talk to your audience.

It is like someone walking into a supermarket looking for advice on “how to improve their metabolism”. It is not going to happen and you are not likely to trust the source of the information. Definitely not like the experience you would get if you walked into a store that specialized in metabolism.

Within the online world there are TWO BILLION people. That is the biggest marketplace in the world by a long shot so you want to really become an expert within the very specific category you choose.

So, when you sit down and are thinking of what your niche is, think not of this imaginary and confusing word “niche”, think instead of a group of people.

But you don’t want this group to be too broad. That is the worst thing you can do when starting out. I want to give you some examples of a niche that is too broad and then I want to give you some examples of groups of people that are much more "niche" and specific.

A group of people interested in health. Not the best (TOO BROAD).

Health could be just about anything. I constantly see folks at WA trying to start off within the health niche. Well "health" isn't a niche, it's very broad. How do you target people within health? That is not an audience that you can effectively target, rather you need to dig down and get more specific.

A group of people looking to improve their metabolism. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of people over 50 years old looking to lose weight. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of people looking to fix their back problems. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this.

A group of men that are looking for help for hair loss. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to for this type of help.

A group of people that are looking for low carb diets. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

See where I am going with this? People are not looking for health, they are looking for something much more specific. There are 10,000’s of niches within the broad "health" industry. Tens of thousands of groups looking to accomplish something, looking to buy something, looking for help solving a problem.

All you need to do is target one of these and you have yourself a niche and a very big group of people.

Let’s look at another example...

A group of people interested in babies. Not the best (TOO BROAD).

People interested in “babies” is going to be very difficult to target because it is far too broad. People don’t open Google and search for “babies” online, they search for things that are much more specific.

A group of people looking for organic baby products. That is a targeted niche (but still a little broad).

A group of people looking for organic cloth diapers. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to for these.

A group of people looking for stimulation toys for infants. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking to do this. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for learning apps for babies. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for jogging strollers. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for cribs and information about cribs. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for this.

A group of people looking for classic children's books. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for these.

A group of people looking for information about colic babies. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for help.

A group of people looking for information on how to treat babies that are sick. That is a targeted niche. There are MILLIONS of people looking for help on this.

See how I am narrowing things down to a much more specific group of people? Sure, these are targeted but they are still massive. Millions of people are looking for information, for help, and ultimately are spending billions of dollars online buying things throughout the course of a year and you are going to be able to capitalize on this with your website.

Massive opportunity resides just about everywhere you look within the online world because there are specific groups of people everywhere (also known as niches)

But What About the Niche Competition? Shouldn’t I Be Concerned?

No...No….and NO!

Within each of these more targeted groups of people, there are 1,000’s (sometimes millions) of low competition keywords you can target. What you are learning here at WA also gives you a huge competitive advantage over your competition and is going to help you capitalize on any niche.

And please do remember, there is a reason there are a million of every type of store in the world. There are a million hardware stores. There are a million baby toy shops. Millions of people are buying stuff in the smallest of categories.

To put this into perspective, there are 4 million babies born in the US alone each and every year. That means there are 4 million mom’s and dad’s online looking for information about their new babies, looking for help, looking to buy products or services...and this is where you step in with your niche website.

This could be for organic cloth baby diapers or for information on colic babies...or anything that targets a specific group of people.

I don’t want to blow your mind too much here, but there are 120 million babies born every year globally so the audience that is online and looking for stuff within this niche is much larger than the 4 million people in the US.

Crazy right?

Now, when you go to choose your niche, dig into it a bit and find a more specific group of people. Recognize that there are MILLIONS of people within every niche you can imagine and that is the beautiful part about this Internet “thing”. It is not going anywhere and as every year goes by, there is opportunity absolutely everywhere you look and it only continues to grow.

Now go out there and find your GROUP OF PEOPLE. If you want any help in regards to this or want to get feedback on your ideas for a niche, drop a comment below and we will be more than happy to help you out.

PS. If you still can’t come up with a niche after this and want one that is “chosen” for you already, go through the Affiliate Bootcamp. I've thought of a few but one of them has suddenly stood out for me: sugar alternatives. Sugar is apparently as addictive as a Class A drug. I'd like to create a niche which explores that and explores alternatives that can offer good taste. I've had a lot of digestive issues in the past with sugar, so I know a starting amount about alternatives. What do you think?

I think that's a really great idea! You know, sugar is really bad for you. Cancer cells thrive on sugar! You could do research on the cons of sugar because there really isn't any pros, then offer alternatives.
Reply
Thanks! :). yes, I read that as well. Apparently it is proven that sugar provides an environment to which cancer cells start thriving. I think this will be my niche once I get used to the affiliate bootcamp and become more seasoned in this world of web marketing. I hope your journey is going well on here :)

I forgot where, but I learned to not target a niche you are passionate about it. They said you should target a niche other people are passionate about, and hire someone who is passionate about the same topic on your website.

Which makes sense, being if you know nothing about the niche you are targeting. But this was from an expert in e-commerce. I'm sure the same strategy can apply to affiliate marketing.

But I've come here to learn, and open to others opinion's. I'm not saying Kyle is wrong, that would be stupid of me. Being he's been doing this for years. I'm simply stating I've learned a different approach, and would love to see other's thoughts on this topic.

If someone else is providing the content then of course it doesn't need to be something you are passionate about or even know anything about. Now if YOU are going to be the one doing it, obviously you need to know what you're talking about, so yes, you need to be passionate about it or you'll sound silly. Make sense Jey?

Yeah, that's basically where I was coming from. I may promote from the Bootcamp being I can't think of a niche. Thanks for the feedback.

I recognize that I know about chronic pain and have authority because I healed myself but I'm not passionate about that. I deeply passionate about men who suffer from low esteem, self worth and would like to explore self exploration which in turn allows them to become global citizens in their communities who create value which is truly my passion. This is for men to answer do men search for stuff like this? If not what is some of the things they do search for that I can tie into this passion. I don't want to focus on affiliate stuff just to make money. I need this to work!!! Especially since everything else has failed.

I'm trying to get this formatted right
keywords ---------------------------Search ------Traffic
low self esteem in men--------------86--------15
emotional support for men- ---------32 --------6
men and stress----------------------- 80--------14

do keyword research, but remember some men will just look up how to deal with stress vs how to deal with stress for men. Take an anonymous poll on social media or other venues that can give you further insight. Think about the things that you think are stressors to men and write articles about that, such as girlfriend cheated on me, loss of income, injuries that prevent playing in sports, still living with parents etc and see how traffic to those articles turn out. Hope that helps you :)

So it's funny I signed up to become an Amazon Affiliate and although they are the largest provider for products. I'm steering clear. I am very much the supporter of the Underdog, The mom and pop and small businesses that help people and create and change lives doing what they do while making millions. So The Niche idea of I have is Moms ges 25-45 who suffer from Chronic Pain such as Fibromyalgia, ADHD, Anxiety who want to feel Normal, Energetic, Focused and Alive so that they can live their dreams on their terms. I am excited but was reluctant to post because I didn't want anyone to take my idea lol (well the creation is only as good as the creator). Duplication sometimes lacks passion so I figure if someone takes it Mine is gonna be better because I have overcome two of the 3 issues and My story is real and heart felt. I am passionate about women taking control of their lives and I geniuninely want to empower people.

Yes, I love the point of this article. We can't be too overwhelmed with ideas and so narrow not too keep thinking further on things. The whole point of a niche, as I understand it, is to summarize an audience and understand their reasons for being in that niche. Perhaps sometimes we overthink things to quickly and are more often than nought discouraged from starting anything (especially blogging or affiliate marketing) because we are overwhelmed and timid of the success and ideas of others.
This was actually a reason that I myself didn't continue looking into affiliate marketing, because I was overwhelmed of others and their websites and I just wasn't keeping focus of what was important to me and the things that mattered to my audience. I can honestly say that WA has encouraged me to bring to life back those dreams I had years ago when I desired to have fun and make a living from home. I just couldn't find something/someone to follow who I could replicate and continue learning from. I don't think anyone wants to feel "duped" and I sure didn't so that's why I never got started.
I could also give the financial reasons for never joining a program but the honest truth is that I wish I would've found WA sooner! So, thanks to the person that brought me here! And to all the support and good advice I'm gathering from these lessons!

Absolutely brilliant information, thank you. Regarding choosing a niche, a lot of things interest me. I obviously don't want to be too broad with my niche and I will try my hardest to make it easy for myself but I just don't know what to do a niche in. Here are a few examples of my interests/hobbies/passions

Football (soccer)
Music (old school hip hop, current heavy metal music)
Movies (most movies but horror mainly)
Video games (I don't have a lot of time to play them now but I love most, and retro video games massively)
Self development (I give a lot of good advice as I'm told. I have experienced a lot in life)
Comedy (this is a huge interest of mine I think it's key to laugh a lot)
Wrestling (been watching since I was a kid)

Anyway that's a lot of interests and I feel I am still lost what to pick. I know what I've wrote above is broad and I would have to choose something in that category for a niche but I'm just not too sure where to start.

I just wanted to get involved in the discussion but any comments are welcome :)

Thanks

I have a passion for finding unique artwork for my home at a reasonable price. Especially canvas paintings. Would canvas paintings be too broad? Should I choose a certain type like Surrealism Paintings?

I also really enjoy finding cute outfits for a special occasion, for my son. Would that be a niche: special occasion clothing for toddler boys. Haha, i am just brainstorming here.

Any feedback would be most appreciated. Thank you

Hi Chelsea,

I think any of these things could be an excellent niche for you to go into but if you could narrow them down a bit more that would be great.

Yea, I think that surrealism paintings would be a whole lot better as this is targeting people who are interested in these type of paintings specifically and looking for more information about them.

Special occasion clothes for toddlers could also be a great niche but once again I think you should narrow this down a bit more.

What type of people are you looking to target within this niche?

Who would your main targeted audience be?

These are a few questions you need to ask yourself before jumping into any niche.

Also, before you can find that perfect niche there are a few additional questions you need to ask yourself.

1. Is ______ something you could see yourself writing about for the next 3 or 4 years without getting bored with it or running out of things to write about?
2. Does_______ excite you whenever you think about it and do you feel like you have a good amount of knowledge about this topic to help other people?

If you base your niche on something you enjoy doing or a hobby of yours, the chances of you being successful have just doubled.

If you pick a niche based on how much money it could make you then you'll have very limited success in the online world.

Once you answer these questions you'll be that much closer to finding your niche.

I hope this helps Chelsea and please let me know if you need any further help with this.

Great start. I see three sites here. 1) Pre Work Outs, 2)Protein Supplements, 3) Work out equipment. I also see a network of cross promotion with these sites. You are on your way man!

Focus on which of those things you are most passionate about. You will be building an authority site (lots of info) so be prepared to really begin writing.

You have the makings of an awesome three way stream here, but start with one first. Hope this helps you.

I think sports nutrition is a good start! Supplements are very popular. Perhaps a goal in mind would help you narrow down an audience.

Are people taking these supplements to gain muscle, lose weight, or increase performance? I think either sports supplements or as suggested above sports supplements for a specific goal would be a great niche!

Most likely i will start on 1 of the ideas

However regarding others, can't i put everything on 1 website?
as in, have drop down list, for people to choose what they are after, then relevant information pops up ?

You can, but I think as you dig in you will get overwhelmed with writing too many articles. It's impossible for one person to cover EVERYTHING. So by focusing on one area, you can become an expert in that thing rather than write about many things generally.

You can have a drop down list however I don't know how to do that yet I'm still learning. But that is an option yes.

I am choosing my niche and would love feedback from experienced affiliate marketers. I have two areas I am considering. Please let me know which you would choose and why:

1. Pet supplies (looking to narrow this... unusual toys? pet fitness? etc?)

2. 40+ women looking to improve overall health and fitness (this would include fitness information as well as overall well-being)
Reply
CCRider77 Premium
I have a question: Are you passionate about either of these? If so excellent pick the one you're the most passionate about.

Also think about supply and demand. The pet supplies is a steady income regardless of economic outlook.

Health and fitness is up and down unless you have an authority site that is established. You'd make a killing in Jan-Feb, then May-Aug, then Dec. What happens during the slow months?

Anyway you have two great ideas I would go for the one you're most passionate about and take into account customer demand.

Hope this helps you.

Very helpful. Since I love photography I'm thinking of making my niche Cannon cameras,I own 2; one is more 'professional' than the other. Is Cannon cameras too broad a niche? Should I narrow it to the type I own (which are the Cannon PowerShot SX130 & the Cannon ROD Rebel T6)? Any feedback would be awesome, thanks.

danielle, personally i feel that canon cameras is too broad to start with.
i would pick the two cameras you currently have and write reviews about them.
go on to introduce the visitor to digital photography, lenses, how to take pictures with these two cameras.
make it an authority site on these two cameras. as they are two different types, one being an slr, the other being a bridge camera you have plenty to teach others.
write down the problems you have, research the answers, look for forums to find others problem.
make sure that your posts guide the visitors back to your main reviews, this way you are recommending the cameras. whatch out for the cameras going obsolete. you need to keep up todate with where they are in their buying cycle, send email to canon to find out how long they will be in production for, and when they will discontinue them. at this point introduce another camera and start to target that one.
good luck with your online journey

Hi there! This is a great question and one that I will gladly help you with. One thing that you need to consider is how long you can produce content for your website when choosing your niche. If you make your entire website based on just one model of camera, chances are you will run out of things to say in a very short time. The Cannon cameras niche is not too broad at all, so long as you can come up with enough material to keep you going for quite a while.

What I would do personally, would be to choose a niche like "digital photography for beginners" Or "professional Digital Photography". A niche like these is still narrowing down the audience but isn't so specific that it cuts out too much of your audience either. Also with a niche like this you can then set up smaller sub-niches within your website. You could have a category at the top of your site with Cannon camera reviews, digital photography tips, tips for choosing a digital camera and so on.

Going on what you said about wanting to eventually launch a book, this would also be a great way of doing that. Since you will be able to build up a large audience by targeting certain low competition keywords, it will get people coming back to you for advice. This gives you a great advertising platform for launching your book eventually.

I think choosing the Cannon Cameras niche may be a bit specific on its own. But by opening up your niche a little to target a larger audience, it will work great as a sub-niche. Its difficult in the beginning as you need to get an idea of what you want the site to look like a few months down the road.

By the way, I did a little keyword research for you and you will have no problem ranking for several keyword phrases within the Cannon Cameras niche.

I hope that helps a little! Just get in touch if you need any further help.

Regards,

Andrew

I think "digital photography for beginners" will be perfect for me, thanks Andrew. It's kind of funny when I think about it because both my cameras are considered beginner's cameras. The PowerShot is a pretty good beginner camera model and there are different series within the type. I do have to apologize for a couple typo errors in my first post, my second camera is in the EOS series of Canon's dSLR cameras and Canon only has 2 n's in the name not 3.

I've been scratching my head with a bit of indecision here. I was leaning toward the Anxiety and Depression niche. I wanted to focus on natural remedies, techniques, and other methods that could alleviate or eliminate these conditions. However, I am a bit concerned about the monetization aspect. I'm not sure about the fragile mental state of potential customers coming to the website. Will they be motivated to actually buy anything? Will they view the ads or other monetization techniques as me trying to take advantage, or make money from their misery? I picked this niche because I have struggled with these issues in my life. At the same time, I also feel that I don't fit the typical bill of a sufferer who may just want a "quick fix" or is overly negative. I mean, I can certainly understand why a sufferer feels the way he/she does, but I also wouldn't want my blog to turn into a cesspool of negative and "downer" comments. I don't know if that makes any sense.

So as an alternative, I was also considering something in the "brain training." A website dedicated to ways of improving various aspects of the brain, such as concentration, focus, and other cognitive functions. I started doing some research into this niche and, lo-and-behold...I ran into an article written by one of the top WA bloggers. It was on the nootropics niche. It was very informative and insightful. I agree that it is probably too new to get into, but I wanted to know what you guys thought about the "brain training" or "brain health" niche. I really don't know what the best name for it would be or how to narrow it down into something manageable and profitable.

I know this has been a little long-winded, but I appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks!

I LOVE the brain training niche idea. I went through a couple years of severe anxiety and I was always looking for brain games, brain health information to control my symptoms naturally and keep my brain occupied so I wouldn't think of things that triggered my anxiety.

To narrow it down more, maybe a niche of information/products, etc that help anxiety sufferers feel calm. Whenever I was searching for something for my anxiety, I was always looking for ways to handle my anxiety with a mind over matter control rather than medication control.

I think you might have a really solid niche. I had this German couple stay at one of my Colombian guest homes and they wrote/blogged in German about every country to travel and what things someone needs to go there.

And of course, every product that a traveler needed would be affiliated with Amazon.

They made a full time income from that one site.

Point is, in another language or specific niche like you're thinking might be be much easier to rank, bring in traffic, and then sales.

Hope this helps,

you can do a site on a broad topic like health, but it will be a lot harder to rank for a could take month or even years before you can build up enough authority to see results, and most people would have quit by then.

Then you choose a more targeted niche it is a lot easier to rank in Google and see results, this will encourage you to keep going and do more,

as for a niche like hair loss there should be enough topics to rite about, for example cause of hair loss, hareditory hair loss, hair loss illnesses like alapisha hair loss surgery ect, these can be general information blogs

Then you can do treatment for hair loss, top 5 hair loss treatment and do review on the products,

the thing with a small niche site you do not need to write 300 blog post or articals, that it for authority sites.

for alarm blogs sites I would recommend around 30 to 50 pages or blogs, if the niche land key works are targeted this should be enough to bring in traffic and get a decent amount of sales, especially if you combine it with email marketing.

Do your research, with related keywords, see what kind of competition there is. The more narrow and specific, yet still with a sizeable niche of interest, is what you want. Maybe "hair loss for women" or even a certain age group of women (or men) ... you get the idea.
Reply

You can narrow it down a bit without going as narrow as hair loss. Like health through eating right, or staying healthy with exercises, or improving your lifestyle. Play with it a bit and see what works for you.

Definitely a thought provoking overwhelming task to become the "BEST" in your niche, to be top tier in Google searches, with a potential million individuals having their say. Especially since it seems most folk starting here are beginners.

Guess it comes down to throwing your pebble into a serene pond vs throwing it into a raging ocean.
Reply
Sharlita Premium
Exactly we will aim at the serene ponds through finding low competition keywords so that we're not competing with bigger saturated markets. Or this might be looked at as sneaking in the back door to saturated markets lol.

And remember you don't have to be the best you just have to provide information and put yourself where there is traffic looking for that kind of information :)

I think that one of the most important lessons we will learn here is how to be noticed. How to be on the first page of a Google Search. Let's face it, who looks past the first 2 or 3 pages of any search engine? This is not a pessimistic message, rather a note to self to make sure that you strive to be the best person in your particular niche

Hi everyone,
I was thinking about tattoo apprentices and beginner tattoo artists, who usually don't have a clue which equipment to buy, or how to start off in general. I'd like to leverage my experience and knowledge and dig deeper into that, getting better at it myself.
I'd really appreciate any thoughts or comments or warnings... :)

I think that's an absolutely BRILLIANT idea. I don't know much about that, but I feel fairly certain you would make pretty good money from those affiliates.

Using the right keywords to get ranked and get your stuff out there and you may just have an amazing niche. Do you know of many other sites that does that?
Reply
Odam65 Premium
I too think it;s a great idea! The newbies need to know where and what to buy. And they need to know what not to buy.

You can really hurt someone if you don't know what you're doing. I know this from experience.

My wife and I got tattoo's from a supposedly reputable place in New Hamshire. My tattoo came out terrible and my wife's got infected. It was on her ankle, she almost couldn't walk.

So yes, any positive information you can give newbies would be a great thing.

actually no, there's one active group on Facebook and people are really nice and helping each other out, but they're all apprentices in the beginning of their way or still looking for an apprenticeship. there are also several forums (most of them closed, for proffessionals only). In the US and Australia there are laws to regulate the tattoo industry, but in several countries there aren't any laws at all, which results in dangerous and uneducated tattooers and clientele. I just feel like I have so much to say about it and I could help a lot of people move forward... but maybe I need to do some more research, which is better - entering a working niche or entering a relatively new and unexplored one?

Wow this is SO motivating!!! Thank you so much:)
the clients too need to be "educated" (Gosh I hate that word I'm sorry), in order to know how to choose their artist wisely, you're welcome to consult with me if you want, send pics of your and your wife's tattoos so i can point out what was done wrong and what to look for when you get your next one:)

Hey Meghan. Great to have you aboard. You can create accounts here too. Have you done any keyword searching on the topics you are interested in? If you do, you might find something that sounds catchy that you may want to see if the domain is available, either as a http://siterubix.com (free) domain or as a standalone domain. You can check each under the siterubix blue button and it's under domains.

Hope that helps! Tim

Hello Meghan, it depends on who sells the item you are promoting. If you are promoting an Item from for example Amazon, than you will have to look to see if they have affiliate programs (which they do btw). Than you would have to sign up with their program and than promote your item on your website. If you're unsure if they have the item or items you want to promote, search on their website and see. Always make sure they participate in the affiliate program before you search. Hope this helped. Good luck :)

Hi Meghan:

Try using Google's Keyword Planner. It will give you pretty comprehensive search statistics on whatever keyword/topic you enter. It'll give you info like how many people have actually searched a particular word or phrase within any specified amount of time. It can be pretty useful.

As far as affiliate programs are concerned, it's as simple as doing a Google search for: "[keyword] affiliate program." If your niche is in service or information (not physical products), there are third party sites like Clickbank that provide these types of products.

It wouldn't be too broad if you focus your niche on that one product. Now if you tried to do several brands of several products, it would be.

That's fine. Right several articles on the benefit of the product. Make a separate article for everything it can benefit.

Hello friends,
I am thinking about drones as a niche. I just got one for my birthday and am absolutely amazed with the endless possibilities this technology offers. The market has been regulated last year in Belgium, (that's a good thing) so if you own a decent drone and want to fly it you need to get a certification, unless you decide to fly it straight above your own yard and not higher than 30 feet.
Getting certified is quite pricey, but with the technology becoming more and more accessible I thought this offers an opportunity. The drone market which was estimated at 15 million euros worldwide 2 years ago is expected to hit the 1 billion threshold in 3 years.
I personally am very passionate about helicopters and quadcopters and now that I am a drone owner I will get my certification this summer.
The idea: get certified, start a side business in aerial photography for private and business matters (parties, real estate developers, industrial inspection) and offer drone training.
I would love to get your feedback about my idea!
Thanks,
Ilya

Helps a lot. I still have a bit of a doubt in terms I'm on the right track with my first niche selection.

I'm a professional software engineer who has been looking into Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. I also have tutoring skills so I was thinking about choosing Maine Learning as my niche. I see a lot of programmers, professional engineers feel that the future of our profession is in Machine Learning. The website would be explaining concepts with everyday language, not so math and scientific as most of the materials. I would create examples that people can check online to see what intelligent software can and will do in regular topics.
There are affiliate programs such as O'Rielly's safarionlinebooks.com http://www.oreilly.com/affiliates/ which I'm personally using for my research and could promote to people reading my posts.
At some point, I would like to re-organize and extend the content and sell it as learning material.

Let me know if this is something that could work or I should re-work the plan somewhere?

To me it sounds fantastic. I would spend a little time using Wealthy Affiliate or Jaaxy's keyword tool, to see how users are searching for this each month, and then play off of that. Incorporate them keywords into your content, post titles etc. Perhaps even a domain name if you haven't decided on that yet.

I have bought a few domains based off of popular keywords. Just need to get around to building them.

Hi. I have had a look at you chosen niche. I must say, I think you have chosen a very interesting niche here. I did some keyword research to see how much interest and competition you have for your subject and there is certainly an audience. The competition for "machine learning" keywords and phrases is quite high but not impossible to rank for. Artificial intelligence has less competition and quite a broad range of keywords to try and rank for.

I think you definitely have an excellent niche here. What you need to think about is your target audience. As a professional software engineer are you looking to target a professional audience? Or could you open up your niche to target a more mainstream audience too? For example could AI toys and educational resources be another branch of your site?

The affiliate program that you are looking to work with looks like an excellent fit for the professional audience. Perhaps you could look into other affiliate programs too? The more topics and areas that you can target the bigger your following will be.

In a niche like the one that you have chosen it's important to stand out as an authority on your subject. Planning will be very important for you here. Personally I would do some research on what other sites are offering within the niche. Know your target audience before starting to write and more importantly know what they are looking for. You need to know how to provide these people with valuable information and the products that they are looking to buy. You need to be a resource that people will return to over and over again.

Although it's not essential in the beginning, you might even go as far as thinking about your "brand". Getting a logo design on your site will help you to stand out and is something that will be covered in later training sessions here on WA. I think it helps to visualize how you want things to look eventually. Look at what other sites are doing in your niche and think how you can go a step further.

Hope that gives you something to think about. Let me know if you need any more help!

Speak to you soon,

Andrew

Great article, even for me, who had not many business ideas before joining WA, now my head is spinning!
I'm revolving around my niche being "fantasy and sci-fi works".
Those can include books, movies and game reviews, I like all forms of media really.
For the more experienced WA community, what do you think?
Is that too broad? Should I focus on something more specific?
I'm afraid of overspecializing and not managing to keep up good content time and again.
Reply
Sharlita Premium
It might be a little broad and you could easily get overwhelmed with all the content you could generate. Try thinking of what is it that a consumer of sci fi might be looking for and start honing in on that. The games, movies and books are good ideas, but also there might be clothing, toys, costumes. I'm not sure if Star Wars is sci fi or not, but there could be a site that focused around Star Wars themed items. There you could, do books, movies, games, apps, collectibles etc, but now it's focused down to one aspect of sci fi instead of the whole sci fi genre, and you'll have plenty of content to write about. I hope that is helpful to you and good luck!!

Conundrum:
I want my niche to be music.
Buuuuutttt, I don't know how I would begin to narrow that down. Nor, I think, do I want to.
I am a lover of all things MUSIC. All genres. The occasional rap (not too much - it's become unintelligible and most artists ain't talkin' 'bout NOTHIN'!), rock, country, screamo, jazz, blues, salsa - I love it ALL! I have often been the only black man at a country concert (not too far fetched, I guess) and will often find myself in the same situation at a Disturb'd concert or a battle of the bands. I have SEVERAL family members and many friends in MO., who are up and coming artists in all of these genres whom I would love to provide a platform for. While not squeezing myself into that corner entirely.
Over the years, I have found that everyone has something to say. And are often saying the same thing, but to different rhythms and at different tenors.
I originally planned on stopping ignorance (racism, sexism all that bulls**t) as a niche, but doubt it would sell as too many people hang on to these nonsensical fantasies with all of their beings.
So, for now. . . . . Music is where I'll start.
Too broad? Any ideas on how to narrow it down if it is? And still include all genres? Or will I have to become one of the narrow minded and limit myself to rock-n-roll

Hey Herb,

Here's the thing. You are better off to start with a narrow/specific niche but as your blog/website gains the trust of the search engines you can then start to expand your topics.

So to answer you question, yes the niche "Music" is too broad to start but that doesn't mean you have to pidgeon hole yourself to one small topic.

What you should do is start with a small/specific topic like "Indy bands" or "new rappers" for example but as your website grows you can then expand what you talk about and then the sky is the limit.

The reason Kyle instructs us to narrow down our niche to something specific is because as a new website those are the only topics we have any chance at ranking for. So it's a smart way to get started because you can actually see some traffic and results early on.

But as your site grows you can then expand to more Competitive topics and you'll naturally learn what types of topics and keywords you can actually rank for and get traffic from.

So the best piece of advice I can give you is to keep your domain name broad. As you've probably learned here already, your domain name doesn't have much if any effect on your traffic. That's why it's a good idea to pick a domain name that is broad because as your site gains authority you'll then have the ability to cover lots of different topics.

Even if you start your site on a very specific topic you should still pick a domain name that could work for any type of music.

I hope that makes sense to you. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Robert

Hello Rahul, the product that is trending or being released around the world should be connected to the niche you have chosen to write about. A niche is usually a topic or something in which you love doing, making or reviewing. Once you have created a website about you niche you then let family, and friends let others know about your site and you also inform others through the various social media sites.

Hey Cindy! Glad to see you're progressing along in your training. Think of a niche as something you have a hobby or interest about. Or, something you're an expert in. You want it to be something that you could constantly write content on. For instance, I like the gym. A lot of people ask me about different protein shakes to drink. So, I purchased a domain about Protein Shakes. It's something that I am knowledgeable about, and enjoy writing about.

However, I also have a few niches I have chosen because I think they could be profitable. I don't really advise this to begin with, because they can seem like a chore at times. You want your experience to be fun. Hope this helps :-)
