For my technical affiliate marketers out there, I just setup FileZila for FTP access to my WA site. But I'm getting this message:

Insecure server, it does not support FT

Yes, I was concerned about this the first time I FTP'd up to my website, but Site Support assured me it was all OK and I've done lots since without any issues.

Glad to hear Phil. Glad I was not the only one. I bypassed the warning and fixed the site :)

Yeah, I use FTP transfer quite a bit so want it to be easy and secure.

Completely agree.

SiteSupport has an answer that you can believe.

I asked WA site support that question 4 months ago.
They replied with:

"Please note that WA has already taken various security measures so you do not need to worry about it. You can safely connect to the FTP."

Thanks David! So are you doing it anyway? (FTPn?) I had to since I broke my site. Yay.

Yes I am using FTP. I would prefer though if WA took care of the "secure" thing so that I do not see the warning every time I do. I know I can ask FileZilla to always ignore the "error" but I prefer to see the warning for the site. I keep hoping that the warning will disappear indicating that WA have make it secure in FileZilla's eyes.

I use FileZilla (FTP) usually to transfer my htaaccess file. I may use alternative ways in the future to work with my htaccess file. Time will tell.

I agree. It may eventually become the new standard as Dale mentioned. And thanks for the tip on the htaccess file.

Thanks for writing this up for us - good to know if we need it in the future.

Yea, good to know if you break your site like I did! FTP is how you restore an important file.

Thanks, good to know.

Wayne

It's totally normal - it just means you're connecting via FTP, not SFTP.

Think of it like HTTP & HTTPS. We used HTTP for many many years with no warnings... Then in the past few years browsers decided to warn us how risky it was, now everything (almost) is HTTPS.

Same story with FTP & the move towards SFTP.

Super, thanks Dale! Makes sense. Do you use FTP for your site?

The ones I host at WA yep :)

Thanks :)

My FTP has never offered any such warning... ever.

If I were Kim, I'd be seeking SiteSupports input on this matter too.

Kim did (see update in post), they said the same as me apparently.

Thanks Dale, but I would have found that prompt concerning for sure and most likely stopped trying to access my sites. Glad I use a different software.

It’s always good to be at least notified about plain text connections, and whilst yes it can be alarming - it is good that FileZilla provide the notification. However I believe they could explain it a little better :)

And because I broke my site, they told me FTP was the way to fix it (aka restore my header.php file). That was a 1/2 day wasted. I had to ignore the warning and go with it to get site back up.

If your site is hosted in WA, and you are using FTP software to access your website, and it does not warn you that the connection is plain, then I would be worried.

I think that this means that your FTP software is assuming that you are ok with a plain connection that is not encrypted. This may have "been okay" a few years ago but the modern versions of FileZilla will warn you if the connection is plain.

At least with FileZilla (with the later versions) it displays the warning which WA support say we can safety ignore because they have put additional safeguards in place.

I prefer to be told about the warning in case there is something amiss.

Yikes... but then, think of it this way... you now know a way to fix a website when/if this happens. These are the types of lessons that stick with us forever.

I would NEVER use FTP software on a mobile device... and, I never take my mobile devices away from my WiFi for the same reason. Security is very important to my network system... yes.

It actually never occurred to me to use FTP software (including FileZilla) on a mobile device. I agree with you that computer security is extremely important.

Now that servers, computers, laptops and mobile devices are more powerful, it makes sense for the security functionally to be there too and used.

The additional overheads associated with computer security making communications encrypted means that computers at both end of the "wire" need to either encrypt or decrypt the message before processing which the powerful servers, computers, laptops and mobile devices have the resources to do in a timely manner.

Absolutely! Thanks for chiming in here.

Has anyone experienced issues with Site Content lately? Like losing your entire draft content?

I was working hard on a draft post yesterday. Easily had 300 - 400 words.

Hope you find your content
Jerry

This happened to me as well and I could not retrieve it. Don't know what went wrong.

Thanks Elores!

Sorry to hear this happened to you too. It is still happening for me. For whatever reason, the save button is not working.

I have built my post in word and copy and paste into Site Content. I save, close the window and then open back up again.

My post is completely reduce to 5 words. I haven't figured out how to get through support. I am trying to wait it out.

I do hope they will find out the cause soon.

I am not sure as to happen but tech support is great they should be able to help you.

Nope. Haven't figured how to contact support without lying. As soon as you say, "no, this is not related to my website", then it directs you to ask a question to the community like this.

No, they give you options to choose from now and I would at least try. You don't have to lie about it. This does have to do with your website and tech support can help you out.

Yes it happened to me the other day, and I still can't find it, so I work in google docs, then transfer over to site content

It's you, Dave. I'm sure of that.... LOL JK

I get it!!! Lol

thanks Dave. I'm working in google doc too. Kind of defeats the purpose of utilizing centralized Site Content tool. But my posts will not save in Site Content. Still. Hopefully time will fix it.

That has never happened to me, Kim. I make it a habit to "save" after every paragraph I write, just to be on the safe side.

Site Support is amazing, so hopefully they'll be able to retrieve what was lost.

Veronica, is there an easy way to contact Site Support about this platform? As I selected the option that this is not related to my website, I was no longer able to send it to support.

Oh, I just assumed that it was a post on your site.

I would contact Site Support anyway, you never know, there could be some sort of glitch that they are not aware of. The worse they can say is "We can't help you."

That's a good point. I'll give that try. Thanks!

I always keep a draft - my internet has been acting weird lately

Thanks Rich. I am seeing this value in this. Where do you store your drafts?

I store mine on google doc

No, never lost a single comma.

This is my first time. I've heard of it happening to other folks. But I was never a victim of this. Even today's post will not save. Currently working in a word doc on my computer.

Send Site Support a ticket. Maybe before, close out of all your applications and restart your computer just to be sure it not the OS acting up. It's unlikely, but I'd do that first.

Kim, it should still be there. This has happened to me before, so don't let it stop you. It may have just been the break you needed before finalizing your draft. Hang in there.
