I've heard that technique several times here at WA. Unless you've had some HTML training the Text Editor looks like a bunch of unfamiliar lines of code (which they are). It can be very confusing, especially the first time.

When I was setting up my first site one asterisk (*) was not enough. I used 4 asterisks (****) and this string help me even more.

Why do you spell asterisk ... asterix?

That's right, Michael.
I have the whole Microsoft Publisher Suite for years and actually never really did anything with Power Point Publisher, it was too confusing.
