What is Your sales tactic?

In the last few years, I have observed a shift in sales tactic which is spreading into all levels of life.

Having some Psychology background I particular got interested in the Psychology of Sales. You know cigarettes and or sweet stuff lining up beside of you while you standing in line to checkout.

This can and will be especially tough when you have your children with you.

But, this isn't what I like to talk about but rather about the sales tactic we all do know very well in advertising, selling with Sex and now Fear.

Yes, Fear has pushed Sex from being the top seller down to second place.

And for me, it is, as ridiculous it might sound, almost logical why this has happened.

Fear is one of the most important, if not even the important, emotion we as a human can have besides Love. The emotion Fear rests in the Fight/Flight response, our pure survival instinct if you so will. I wrote about this a bit in one of my previous posts.

Although, we don't have anything in common anymore with the primitive lifestyle of the cavemen and its followers, especially since we have developed our "reasoning brain", right?

The Fight/Flight Response is still very active to this day, it actually will be with us forever.

However, thanks to the newest addition of our brains (From the Reptilian Brain to the Limbic Brain to the Neocortex), we have the option to observe our behavior and are being able to recognize how we do react to certain advertising tactics.

As I have mentioned above, selling with Fear is on the rise and already has pushed Sex from being the # 1 sales tactic to second place.

I certainly don't like to explore all the facts this topic with my post because there is still lots and lots to be researched upon but, what I can say for sure, is the fact, that it already has spread beyond "just" selling Products and Services and this is what really concerns me a lot.

The question, however, what is ethical and what is not, isn't for me to be answered only each one of us can answer it for themselves.

So, my original question to you is, do you will ride the wave and selling with Fear "just" for profit reasons, or do you use other alternatives, and if so what are they?

I suppose, if I had to choose, I prefer a Fear in top position versus the infamous "sex sells"....

Maybe we could start a Peace Sells movement.....

This is a tough one Sylvia. As far fear tactic, I actually had to revert to this during combat missions in the Army as it was applicable to saving lives. I would however would never resort to this type of action for profit. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Jerome I can see where you are coming from when it goes about Fear, nothing more needs to be said, my friend. :)

I don't use tactics. I use methods. Tactics seem to scream manipulation.

Method is strictly a term to identify how you approach a customer, or a product, or a service. However, one method a person might use is a "tactic." Tactic just sounds wrong to me.

However, I am a very bad salesman. I even have a hard time giving things away.

Very good post. I haven't figured out a way to use fear to move fishing lures yet so I am sticking to keep on fishin'!

One fear would be " You'll miss out on the biggest catch of your life if you don't buy and use drjec's famous fishing lure today!"

I suppose even the fish might be fearful!

Nice article, and trying a fear tactic works well because people are in need of money.
But sometimes I have a moral issue with the fear tactics.
