I know a famous package holiday company in the UK who have .com as their brand but then they have bought all the key alternatives around it so ( .co.uk etc) if you go to their brand in error it directs customers to the .com. it can protect your brand long term but its not for everyone...

I buy up mine and our clients' domain names as well, it's good practice :-)

Exactly as Mark mentions :-) Google doesn't have a preference, however, humans tend to think dot com when directly visiting a website. If your chosen domain name is taken in the dot com form, then I would not recommend registering the dot net etc, as it will cause confusion and there may even be Trademarks involved, which means you might be forced to give up the dot net etc.

is it possible to change your domain name as time goes by? Lets say form .net to .com and vice versa. Or do I need to buy a new domain?

Domain name's are purchased in 1 year increments and can not be changed. If you want a new one you will have to purchase a new domain name. You can move your content from one domain name to another, but you will lose the domain age and authority that you have built up over time. It is recommended to purchase one domain name and stick with it where possible.

.com is always recommended however in terms of SEO there isnt much difference. Google ranks sites based on content and relevancy. The domain extension doesnt factor into it.

The only time Google will consider the domain TLD is for country specific domains like .us or .uk.
