I am working on a food blog, and I like to talk people through cooking foods more so than just tossing a recipe at them. When I do keyword research on topics such as "ways to cook beef cube steak" Jaxxy gives me a result of QSR 2 and SEO 95. When I actually go to Google and search this keyword, it is only recipe websites that results come back for. Again, I am including recipes throughout my content by my main keyword doesn't contain "recipe" Am I going in the right direction to rank for these keywords, or should I look at another way?

Try dropping the "ways to".

Thank you. If I drop the "ways to" it does come back with more traffic. The QSR is a little higher at 38, but I suppose that isn't too much competition to be up against if I am putting out quality content.

If your keyword has that low of a QSR with even a small amount of traffic it's definitely a solid keyword.

Even up against all of the recipes? I am not trying to rank for a recipe.

hopefully you are narrow enough to talk to a smallish audience
rather than talking about all food....
how do other food bloggers do it - what are they talking about
as you say for something like 'ways to cook....' google wil always come back with recipes - and authority sites at that....
i think you will need to look at cooking theory or cooking science or something like that - the audience will be smaller - but using pinterest for marketing may help
just having a quick look it is pretty competitive, so you will need to find your angle to 'feed your crowd' so to speak
good luck with your niche and carry on brainstorming

I do understand that the recipe websites do have all the authority mostly. I have been thinking it would be helpful to narrow down what I am writing about to more of southern cooking techniques and tips. I would still like to include recipes into my content though. Does this sound like a better idea?

yes...if you can find a niche that you are really passionate about and have another angle
finding keywords wil lbe interesting and you need to look at very high seo numbers to get any chance of ranking
remember to try to use schema - check out jays replay ( under classes- search schema) anf google may find your site through your recipes - especially if they are unique...
but you can go into almost the history of the area and why things developed and original recipes ' like your grandma used to make'
which are good for you and keep you healthy....

Mmmmm, just tried "ways to cook beef cube steak", and the reason of course that there is no QSR is that there is no competition. IT's one of the most frustrating things that keyword searches does and it makes feel unloved, but you are not of course.

If your site is different, then will it not stick out and attract traffic if the rest are just recipes and you use the same keywords. Just a thought.
