It's just over a week before I took the plunge, paid for an annual membership courtesy of the Black Friday mega-discount and re-energised my inner entrepreneur.

So what have I achieved in the first week of my yearly memberhip? Is it going to be a wasted chunk of cash or am I seizing the day and making hay while the sun shines?

Certification Level 4 Complete

I finally completed level 4 of the certification training and I thought it ended on a high note, leaving me rearing to go on to level 5.

I've been here since 2016 so for some of you it's probably laughable that I haven't finished yet but there's reasons for my lack of completion.

First, I've never allowed myself to progress without completing the action points. So, if the lesson says, "write a post with x keywords in it and pin it to your board," I don't move on until I've done that.

Secondly, life keeps getting in the way but I'm working to rectify that.

Sure, I could rush through the training but I sort of feel that I'd miss some things along the way if I did that - and my blog would feel as half-assed as my attention to the training was.

My Bootcamp blog was hacked

Literally a day after I signed up to an annual membership, my bootcamp blog was hacked. That was a refreshing wake-up call that I needed to take updating my plugins and core more seriously (it had remained in the state I'd left it several months back).

It turns out that the intrusion was probably a simple brute-force attempt on the default admin username as since I've installed a security plugin, those attempts are now blocked on a daily basis, multiple times a day.

I'm not sure how I attracted the attention of the script-kiddies but I actually appreciate the life-lesson because it helped me focus on what I wanted to do with the site, reinstall it with a fresher look and get moving on content creation.

Two posts created for my bootcamp blog

Once I'd re-created my bootcamp blog, I restored the old posts and proceeded to write a new one. It turned into a bit of a whopper at just over 2,500 words. Not bad for a comeback.

I also created a seven-page workbook to accompany the post that's completely free to download. I wanted to experiment with using free downloads as a hook but without requiring a sign-up to access them (I don't believe that a download you have to provide an email address for is truly free).

A bit of promotion on Twitter & Pinterest and my dormant site received its first fifteen visitors (besides those that left comments via the WA Site Comments tool).

A couple of days later, I felt inspired to write another post, again including a download (just a single page this time).

Each of the downloads is branded with my site's identity as I'm trying to encourage returning readers. Whether it's working is too early to tell as I need to keep publishing.

I updated my Facebook pages

I deactivated my Facebook account at the end of October for a number of reasons but the main being that I was sick of Facebook's abuse of my personal data. It's felt liberating and I didn't think I'd last this long without it.

I did create a dummy account to solely act as an admin for my website pages. It has no friends, no likes and no groups so it won't distract me if I log in to update the pages with new content about my website.

I managed to log in and post updates about my new content but I hated doing it. I noticed Facebook was insidiously trying to suck me back in by suggesting people I might know. It failed - I've made Facebook my tool now, instead of the other way around.

I've been getting involved again

Over the last week, since I've been back, I've started to get involved in the WA community again. That's felt good because the community here is one of the things that makes Wealthy Affiliate special.

I've missed a number of people here and I've been given a warm welcome back from many.

As an aside, my rank has climbed back to 193 from whatever it was when I returned a week or so ago. I think it was around 4,000 but I can't remember.

It just goes to show that it just takes a few words of encouragement and a few blog entries to get you back up there.

Coming up

My life really is too hectic right now to commit to solid goals for the coming week but I've also learned that no goals results in no progress.

So here's my goals for the coming week. If I don't hit them, I'm not going to beat myself up about it but I'm going to use them as an inspiration to achieve, if I can.

  1. Write and publish another two posts for my bootcamp blog
  2. Write and publish two new posts for my niche blog
  3. Daily tweets for both blogs
  4. A new pin for each new blog post

I hope you all have an awesome, productive week and I'll try to summarise my progress next week with another digest (no promises, though). :)

Glad to see you have returned to the WA community!

I know how hard it is to find time for life and WA however, I think it's very wise of you to first establish a few obtainable goals.

Onward and upward!

Thanks Susan!
Things didn't quite go according to plan but I didn't expect to complete them all anyway. :)

Congrats on multiple fronts. Love the pic next to your bootcamp blog account getting hacked.

Onward and Upward,

Mark

Thanks Mark - the site needed a clean up anyway. :)

We tend to set too many goals and get overwhelmed when we cannot reach our milestones. Main thing: Work on the most important thing a little bit every day.

Thanks Bill!

So true - that's why my goals aren't set in stone in any more. :)
I'll do them if I can but if I can't, no biggy.

hey hi Phil! ... very, very helpful, insightful blog post! ... ⭐️

thanks kindly for sharing today --- much appreciated as i'm simply snailing along here ...

so much to learn and to do being a tippy-toe kinda person ...

all the best, cheerio ... 😊

*( p.s. just wondering about the 'brute-force' hack of your site ... how could that happen when 'security' is at the server level to prevent botnet intrusions ...? .... and what does one of those look like ? ... we (WA) just went through some discussion on the security coverage here... your kind reply would help me to understand things better ....)

Heh - you're the second person to ask me that this week. ^_^

What's a tippy-toe kind of person? I'd like to think it's someone that's always on their toes reaching for something just out of their grasp but they're going to keep reaching until they get it.

The truth is, I never found how they got into the site to redirect it to another domain name (they changed the site_url setting in the settings panel).

I'm just guessing it was brute force because of the number of attempts to do that each day that the new security plugin is blocking. They could be unrelated attacks and they might have gained access through an out of date plugin that had a security issue.

A brute force attack is where someone uses a computer programme to cycle through common passwords or random sequences using a known username - in this case 'admin'.

I wrote about it earlier this week in this post:

.... thanks kindly for your prompt reply -- much appreciated ...

tippy toe >> testing the temperature of the beach waters' edge instead of diving in (figurative expression when i use & then on the other hand, sometimes literally, too!) ... lol ... 😊

ok back to the security plug-in ... i just blogged both and asked a question as Kyle spoke to this issue within the past week ... short version here is that WA provides amazing layers of security at the server level and an extra security plug-in is unnecessary and something that he does not recommend adding as it could cause interference with the effectiveness of the security already provided ...>> bottom line: we're good with our website hosting as is on the WA platform....

there that's it for now.... thanks muchly again ...

I'm rooting for you. You're right not to beat yourself up if you don't complete every goal.
I have nothing else to get in the way and I still don't get all my goals completed.
I too have been here since 2016 but only started my website in March 2018.
I strive to do a minimum 1,000 word post every day but have only done 103 since March.
I feel it's better to be determined to never quit than it is to meet goals. Just my opinion of course.
I have made money every single month for several months. It's not much but it's enough to tell me that WA works and keep me moving forward.

Blessings, I wish you all the best!

Thanks Fran -

I think it's hilarious that you say you've "only" done 103 articles since March. Many people will be struggling to hit one a week. :)

I totally agree that being resolute is probably more important that meeting goals but I find setting them helps me to focus my mind on achieving something rather than bouncing from one thing to another.

It's encouraging to hear that you're making money every month now. Even if it's not much, it's more than you were making to begin with!

Phil,
Well seems like you sure do have things under control with
a plan and it is good that no one ever beats themselves up if
they fail to meet their goals - that is when we rewrite them
and do better next time :)
Congratulations for moving up and I am sure that you are
going to be doing great within a matter of months :)
Thank you for sharing,
Susan

Thanks Susan.

I'm not sure about under control but I feel I'm moving in the right direction again.

These days I think goals should be destinations we enjoy travelling towards, not rushing towards with no appreciation for the journey.

Off you go...no time to relax just yet. Sounds like you are full of momentum and the best part, you already have a plan.

Go and slay the dragon and then return to the mountain to claim what is rightfully yours, the throne!

Thanks Joe - I'm hoping that I'll be able to keep the momentum because that's where I went wrong on two previous occasions... kind of fizzling out due to other life commitments. :)

Sounds like a plan.

Thanks Kerry!
