How to solve "ERROR: Please enter the same password in both password fields."
I had a weird annoyance today.
I'd created a new admin account before deleting the default account (it makes your site more secure if people don't know what your admin account is called) but when I edited the profile of my new account, I got the message shown in the image above.
The really weird thing is that there aren't any password fields on the Edit Profile page.
Why on Earth would it be displaying this error instead of saving my profile options?
The solution
When Wordpress misbehaves one of the first things I do is deactivate all my plugins and see if the problem is still happening. This helps me to prove it's a plugin that's causing the issue.
In this case it was.
I activated each plugin, one by one, until the problem re-appeared and it didn't take long to discover that the EWWW Image Optimizer pluging was the culprit.
Why? I have no idea. It's a good thing I don't edit my profile page very often.
Anyway - if you have this problem, try deactivating the EWWW Image Optimizing plugin as it will probably solve your problem. Don't forget to reactivate it when you're done editing your profile page.

I deactivated the EWWW Image optimizing plugin and I still am receiving the same error ;ERROR: Please enter the same password in both password fields. I then deactivated all my plugins and it still gives me the error. Can't seem to fix it?
The other possibility is that it's your theme. Most Wordpress themes have a file called functions.php that can introduce new functionality with the theme.
Try temporarily using a different theme (e.g. TwentyNinetieen) with your plugins still disabled.

While searching on Google for possible solutions to this problem, I stumbled upon a blog post made by a wordpress enthusiast and he suggested the same as you suggested here. I followed the advice, deactivated the plugins but the problem didn't go away with the advice. In fact, I got a mild headache when I tried putting back one by one all the plugins I have deactivated. I got confused since I have so many plugins and some of them are intentionally parked and are only activated when needed.
Do you know what? I accidentally discovered the solution!
The problem seems to be happening if you're logged in using Chrome. When I tried editing using Mozilla, BOOM! It went through without problem. So, I must say, "it's browser related rather than plugin related."
