Good news everyone!

Wordpress 5 was released today

It brings a whole new bunch of changes but the ones that I'm most excited about are the new Twenty-nineteen theme that's been created to make the most of the equally new Gutenberg post editor.

You may already be using Gutenberg as it was available as a plugin for a while but now it's integrated as the official Wordpress editor, you'll need to get up to speed with how utterly awesome it is!

Build with blocks

First of all, there's no reason you can't keep writing your content in the Site Content editor here on WA (I use it a lot) but once you've submitted it to your site, there's no reason you can fancy it up easily by throwing in some Gutenberg blocks for images etc.

Don't panic

If you prefer the old editor, you can install it as an official plugin (look for Classic Editor in the Plugin manager).

I'm really excited at the chance to explore the new features that Wordpress 5 is offering as I think it will help our websites to look even better and make it so much easier to make our content look more attractive and easier to read for our visitors.

If our content looks more attractive and it's easier to read (assuming it's quality content), that will encourage visitors to come back to our site (and don't forget that return visitors can often be your best customers)!

Finding out more

Wordpress have written a very detailed blog post here: https://wordpress.org/news/2018/12/bebo/

CodeinWP have a helpful cheatsheet here: https://www.codeinwp.com/blog/wordpress-5-0-cheat-sheet/

What do you think?

Are you as excited as me? Have you had a chance to try the new features yet? What do you think? Leave a comment below! :)

Thanks Phil,

I have this bookmarked. I'm not using it yet ... should be in a couple of weeks and looking forward to learning.

Acquainting myself of the WordPress 5.

Have fun, I know I'm loving it. :)

Yes, I think it's really an upgrade that is better than the previous one.

with wordpress 5 being a bit different than previous versions, when will the training modules be updated to reflect these changes?

I'm afraid that's up to Kyle but all of the current modules will still apply. The only thing that's really changed is the editor (and it's awesome).

If you publish your site content here on WA using the Site Content tool (also awesome), it will publish it to your site as a single Text block in Gutenberg.

You can either leave it as it is or you can cut and paste the text out into other blocks so you can use image blocks and so on to decorate your post.

If you don't want to do that, don't worry - your article will still look the same as it did before Gutenberg arrived. :)

I haven't had a chance to check out the Word press 5.0 as of yet but I am still working under the classic version so I don't know if I will ever work on the 5.0 I may but I don't know as of now.

But I will try to check it out though. Thank you for sharing this information though I really appreciate that.

My advice, if you're not sure, is to create a free website using the siterubix platform (e.g. testwp5.siterubix.com) so that you can play with it without affecting your live websites.

It really is worth trying out!

Thank you for the great advice I think that I will try it and see what happens.

Mary

You're welcome - and the best bit is if you're using a test site, you don't have to worry about making mistakes. Just delete the post and make another one to play with.

Okay but there was updates and my site is now changed over to 5.0 so I am working through it. So I am taking my time so I don't make any mistakes but I am really considering the play site though. Thank you for the advice I really appreciate that.

Thanks for sharing. I'll be definitely having a good look. Cheers

You might not have noticed this yet but I think the new version is awesome! :D

I don't hate the Gutenberg idea, but the classic editor is what I enjoy. I have the classic for one site and the new one on the other. I am from the HTML days so these editors are super easy to use, but I like more code looking stuff. Yea, nerd alert lol

I'm a professional web-developer so I totally get where you're coming from but I've been really enjoying playing with page building plugins recently... and then Gutenberg arrived.

I'm looking forward to developing some themes that leverage the new functionality.

Thanks for the post, friend! Very informative! I'm equally excited at the new version but have not tried it out yet. So, I'm testing it out this week. Thanks for asking!

I hope you enjoy the possibilities!
To get the most out of it, I recommend watching some of the demo videos if you've not used a page builder plugin before.

Not yet had a chance to investigate it so far.

It's probably the biggest change to happen to Wordpress in a long time but it's an awesome one too.
