Experience is defined as:

n. practical contact with and observation of facts or events

v. encounter or undergo (an event or occurrence)

As a general rule, employers have a very favorable view of the experience
factor when deciding to select a candidate to fill a vacancy at their company.
Many of these employers have either served in the military or are
extremely familiar with the methods utilized by the military complex to train
and develop personnel for management positions.

Depending upon the position they are seeking to fill, the possibility is there
that the applicant already has a background from the military that aligns
with the open position. However, if not, the employer has a reasonable idea
of a person's capabilities based on past performance in the military. This is
usually obtained by requesting copies of prior evaluations by supervisors
in the military.

To give everyone who is not totally familiar with the strengths that are
developed by this military training, they are listed below (some are
self explanatory and others require a brief explanation):

1. Leadership training
2. Work as a team member or a leader
3. Ability to get along & work with all kinds of people
4. Ability to give & follow directions
5. Ability to work under pressure & meet deadlines
6. Drug free
7. Security clearances (certain jobs require a special level of clearance
and in many cases applicants already possess needed requirements)
8. Systemic planning organization
9. Emphasis on safety
10. Familiarity with records and personnel administration
11. Flexibility and adaptability (cross training required in military facilitates
performance in different assignments with limited instruction)
12. Self-direction (abilities learned previously to accomplish tasks with
limited assistance and direction)
13. Ability to conform to rules and regulations
14. Educated (prior training provided necessary education)
15. Initiative (prior training instilled will to complete mission to the best
of ability)
16. Work habits (strict enforcement to "get the job done" translates to
a good work ethic)
17. Standards of quality and commitment to excellence
18. Global outlook (having an understanding of other cultures, beliefs,
and traditions, while showing respect for same)
19. Client and service oriented (realizing the importance of clients and
the need to provide excellent service to ensure their continued
relationship with your company)
20. Concerned about the community & family (showing a genuine concern
for the community & families as they are the life blood of the
organization and support for them only enhances the reputation of
your company)
21. Specialized advanced training (continuing training to stay abreast
of any new concepts being introduced which may assist the company
in providing significant benefits to their customers)

Therefore, as you can readily see the significant benefits realized by
employers derived from potential employees having this knowledge and
training and how that can be applied to their organization.

The value established by their dedication and willingness to serve is a very admirable trait that is illustrated here:

"The male role models I had all seemed to have been in the military. My
father served in the Army. My uncle was in the Marine Corps. Both of
my grandfathers served in WWII. There weren't any career soldiers in my family, but when I was young it seemed like a way of arriving at adulthood."
-Kevin Powers

"Many of our nation's great leaders began their careers at a service academy.
I encourage anyone interested in a rewarding college experience or military career to apply as soon as possible." -Chris Cannon

"With freedom comes responsibility, and I can think of no responsibility
greater than putting on a military uniform and standing in the gap between
an enemy threat and civilian life." -Zack Wamp

In summary, I leave you with this: If you are a gambler and want to hedge your
bet, then just follow this advice and hire a Vet!
