This is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life !
Welcome Mr. & Mrs. Year 1913 !

A good business associate of mine got married in September and they eloped away privately to the tropics for the festivities.

Well, to help celebrate this in a more professional and yet intimate way -- i racked my brains to figure out what would be an appropriate token of appreciation. What would you do?

The lovely couple already have materially everything they need -- a house & all the necessary accoutrements as they've been living together common-law for some years already.

After a few focus tests with close friends, neighbours, associates, I decided that a bottle of bubbly was in order and would be a tasteful choice.

As I was wandering about the shopping mall, i strolled into one of my frequent haunts of a bookstore. . . . and I had the good fortune of being able to ask the store manager if she would happen to have a little book of love available after I recited my gift-giving goal.

Delightfully, she pointed to a tiny, darling red cinnamon book and a rather drab olive green one.

Ahh! .. a matched pair seemingly! ...

Darlings -- eureka! ... what a fitting find !

The pair of books turned out to be perfect as fun gifts for my freshly wedded friend !

One of the tiny books is titled, "Don'ts for Wives - 1913" and the other "Don'ts for Husbands - 1913" by Blanche Ebbutt.

What a hilarious selection! ...

Have you come across these handsome lil' volumes in your bookstore travels?

Well, as the bookstore manager knows me well enough that everyone who comes across my path recognizes the laughter quotient is eternally present! ...

So, yes of course, this is the perfect accompaniment to the sparking white wine as presentation gifts from yours truly.

Some giggles to share -- here are a few 'chuckle' clips from the books:

For wives -- some sample Don'ts :

"Don't nag your husband. If he won't carry out your wishes for love of you, he certainly won't because you nag him."

"Don't interpret too liberally the 'obey' of the Marriage Service...."

"Don't get the idea that all your husband wants is a housekeeper. or a decorative head of a table. He wants a companion and when he is at home he doesn't want you to be always somewhere else."

"Don't say you don't want to be bothered by business details. By all means, encourage your husband to put business worries behind ... )

"Don't object to your husband getting a motor-bicycle; merely insist that he shall buy a side-car for you at the same time."

For husbands "The Thinkers" -- some sample Don'ts:

"Don't be surprised, or annoyed, or disappointed, to find, after treating your wife for years as a feather-brain, that you have made her into one. . ."

"Don't condescend, you are not the only person with brains in the house."

"Don't omit to bring home an occasional bunch of flowers or a few chocolates. Your wife will value even a penny bunch of violets for your thought of her."

"Don't neglect to insure your life for a reasonable sum. Then you will know that your wife will not be left in actual want if you die suddenly."

"Don't think your wife cares nothing for money. Money doesn't make happiness, but the lack of it can cause a great deal of misery. When your views and hers on money matters conflict, think what a lot she has to do with her share of the family income."

COMMENTARY:

Well, folks, it is now 2018 ! ...

What do you think of the 1913 version of partner relationships? ... it's a little different today or is it? ...

The tiny books are so cute and inviting to look at, yet, they sure pack a powerful punch !

We'll leave it for now to ponder, to digest -- how far have we evolved ?
