Dear Wealthy Affiliate entrepreneur wordies, word-smiths, biz bloggers, keyworders, wordy writers, media moguls, et al ...

My good friend Merriam-Webster sent me an earth-chuckling event full of 'hogwash' or perhaps, better known as 'hooey' or is it a bunch of 'claptrap' today!

Normally, my good buddy doesn't phase me in the least bit with any of the 'baloney' that's being spouted Out There in the world, as it turns & rotates every 24 hours seven days a week.

Well, listen up!

Reading this post just might awaken and titillate your wordie senses to get better acquainted with various kinds of synonyms possible when composing your blogs to help attract more interest in your writings by a hooting audience!

Let's give everyone a Thumbs Up!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Take for Example:

Bunkum or Buncombe?

Have you ever heard of these two 'fun' words?

(me neither, until today, we're always learning something new each and every day here)

Did YOU know the following:

Some words, rare or not, in the English language have more interesting histories than others.

Now, in the case of "bunkum," a person could almost say it was apparently an act of Congress that brought the word into being.

Let's go WAy back, a couple of centuries ago, in 1820, (it's now 2020).

Two hunderd, (200), years ago to be exact, Felix Walker, who represented Buncombe County, North Carolina, in the U.S. House of Representatives, was primed that his voice be heard, in representing his local constituents.

There was a lot of speech-making days!

Being rather long-winded & full of exhortations, and to the exasperated senses of his colleagues, Walker insisted on delivering a long and wearisome "speech for Buncombe." (Buncombe County that is) ... a speech EXTREME ! .....

Walker's unwavering, perseverant, persistent, prolocution turned buncombe (later re-spelled or perhaps mis-spelled to "bunkum"), into a synonym for meaningless political claptrap and later for any kind of nonsense or silliness.

That's how a word can evolve over time through common usage in every day talk over the centuries.

A more recent example in the usage of 'bunkum' occurred here:

~~Heather Yakin, Journalist, Reporter for The Times Herald-Record, March 17, 2020~~

Yakin commented on the efficacy of today's social media where: -- ". . .people are reposting and retweeting and emailing myths, hurling them across the internet with the kind of speed attainable only by pure bunkum."--

So there we have it!

It's Pure Bunkum! .... lots of laughs, chuckles, giggles, snorts ! ....

What examples from any of your recent tweets or posts that you may have read recently could be construed as 'Pure Bunkum?"

What other 'key' words or synonyms would you use for 'bunkum?'

. . . several synonyms were dotted throughout this post . . . plus, see photo hint > > >

Thanks kndly for reading and Enjoy a wonderful weekend ahead ...

That word brought back memories. The last time In heard or used it was as a child in India. I had to do a double take when I saw you bring it up! Thanks for the genesis of that word.

Your definition is spot on. It's like the synonym of Hogwash!

Cheers.

Edwin

Haven't heard Bunkum in a while Keisha.
I do love words and have made up words before now. It'as funny when those same words are seen here and there around the internet.
A favourite made up word is "fantabulous" a mix of 2 words. I used to use it often on facebook a few years back.
A favourite real word is "Serendipity" but it's not one I can get into a conversation much.
"Balderdash" is very eloquent too, Twack always comes up with some good ones.

hi Linda ... lovely to see you here with your most interesting reply on words! ....Fantabulous! .... lol .....

I had a friend who used to love saying, "that's outrageous!" ... just for emphasis on anything ... just a silly ...

appreciate you popping by to enjoy a wee visit & chat together,

enjoy a Fabulous Friday and a wonderful weekend ahead,

all the best, cheerio .... :)

Don't be fooled.

Bunkum is also a valuable keyword in the underground construction industry.
It's a little know fact that diggers, excavators, and shovel handlers don't like the word "bunker".

The Germans started to use this word in WWI instead of the English "dugout".
(Look up "Führerbunker" if you don't believe me.)

So, not to be confused with a German spy, workers in the below-the-ground trade used bunkum instead.
Easy explanation.

Here is some very useful advice:
The next time you go to war with an enemy tribe and you need a blast shelter urgently, ask for a bunkum at your local underground construction office.
Using the insider word will give you automatically 20% off the bunkum catalog price.

And always remember the motto of all the Doomsday weirdos:
In bunkum we trust.

hey hi Mer!

Appreciate your fulsome reply & for sharing your knowledge! ...

my, my, you're full of wonders!

Super to know about the other aspects of 'bunkum!'

Hopefully, we (humanity) can progress to Peace, Understanding & Harmony for All!

It's been said, 'as above, so below' ... as below, so above.... would we still need an 'underground?' ...

keep well, stay strong, thanks for being here,

all the best, cheerio .... :)

I laughed when I saw your title. My Grandparents used to use that word. "No way that's true. Load of old bunkum" I myself use it now and again due to hearing it a lot when I was young. Now I know the origin of the word. Thank you! That post started my day with a grin.
