Growth of the Gig Economy

hello Wealthy Affiliate world!

This post is for entrepreneurs, video marketeers, members who work in the 'gig economy, and anyone interested in what the Harvard Business Review has to say about the changing tradition of work to the new.

This first October weekend of 2020, we've been taking a gander and stroll through our scholarly journals and taking a peek at what YouTube has in store these days.

There's so much out there, that it's hard to fathom, at times, what to focus on.

Distractions galore!

Anyway, here we are.

-- The GIG ECONOMY --

Ok, what is the Gig Economy?

Let's start with what is a gig?

The term gig had been a slang term used mostly within the music field ... for instance, gotta gig this Friday evening to play the drums!

What's a gig in the work world of today?

It's a reference to free-lance or casual or contract work or even online platform work!

This type of work offers plenty of flexibility and variety --- considered quite different from the traditional 9 to 5 work week when being 'hog-tied' to a desk or workplace used to be commonplace.

Even now, with the state of the world as we know it, workers are moving off-site and working more at home.

-- VIDEO MARKETING --

This post is being written to highlight the rise in the gig economy and the associated rise in the video marketing blog-o-sphere where a huge percentage of businesses are now using video technology to promote their messages and / or products.

It's been reported that over 76% of businesses are now using video technology to get their messaging through to audiences for engagement.

Remote work is enhancing the web-conferencing work space through platform applications such as Zoom.

In terms of technological advances, the camera phone is being built better with higher capacity for video sharing and is actually removing the barriers to enter the gig economy.

And did you know that, apparently, 86% of teens prefer to own iphones vs androids. Some say that perhaps, it's due to the use of Apple technology in classrooms today?

Iphones are seen as 'prestige devices' and with peer group pressure during the adolescent phase of life, i-messages is considered to be the best 'texting' messaging system.

And for 89%, their next camera mobile phone will be an iphone.

So look out for this trend-setter -- will it be for real in the marketplace?

With everyone having a mobile device of some sort, it bodes well to ensure that platforms are compatible with this rise in portable usage.

WHAT Does the HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW have to SAY?

A management article published by Harvard Business Review (an alma mater), had a few things to say about the what I like to coin the 'new gig economy.'

They found some very interesting and remarkably similar findings of opinion that spanned across generations and occupations:

"All those we studied acknowledged that they felt a host of personal, social, and economic anxieties without the cover and support of a traditional employer."

However, respondents asserted that their independence was a choice and that they would
not give up the advantages and many benefits that came with it.

While they expressed concerns with unpredictable schedules and variable finances, they also felt they were more courageous and were leading freedom and more enriching lives than their corporate counterparts who were still having to 'clock-in' to the norms of a 9 to 5 routine and being rather 'office imprisoned' of sorts.

Harvard found that the most successful independent workers navigated effectively by fostering and adapting to four types of connections.

The identified four connectors: — 'place, routines, purpose, and people' — helped each freelancer get through the emotional ups and downs of their work, as well as, to and benefit by the ultra-energy and inspiration from their freedom in their chosen type of unique & often times, varied work that best suited their talents.

This is the opposite of working for someone else where the terms & conditions are dictated to fit the 'company's requirements.'

--- Where Conformity is prized! ...

As the new gig economy grows worldwide, new provisions in new ways of coping with the inherent change that comes with it will determine the future success of new work.

New work is being defined in ways that we can only imagine at this time!

Any Ideas here?

Indeed, with the advent of the world pandemic still very much in process, 'corporate' employees who are working more autonomously, now also working from a home office, may just feel better prepared that one day they just might to either, want to and rather need to, make the change and transition by jumping on the 'band-wagon' into an online career.

And it's a growing phenomenon! ... take a look at the increased use of Zoom, for example!

WHAT Does A VIDEO MARKETEER have to SAY about the Gig Economy?

"The hustle brings the dollar."

"The experience brings the knowledge."

"The persistence brings success."

----Ross Simmonds, video marketeer, B2B----.

Great post, Keisha!

I have a full time business but I’ve had various “gigs” all throughout my educational and working year as a guitar teacher, part time working musician, and engineering & informatics consultant. It’s great to able to bring that sort of variety into your working life and I consider myself lucky in that respect.

Affiliate marketing is my newest gig and the one that I’m hoping will earn me passive income, not counting mutual funds, etc. I’m having lots of fun here at WA! 😃

Frank

hi Frank! ... that's Awesome, totally! ...

wow! ... sounds like you're multi-talented and enjoy a lot of variety in your life ... as as they say, 'variety is the Spice of life!' ...

just read your bio --- and a quick query if that's ok with you -- are you still in the practice of medicine -- so many credentials! ...

appreciate your reply and sharing .... :)

Hi Keisha,

I have been in private practice, outpatient and inpatient (hospital), for over 30 years now. My training is in internal medicine and my office is in Warwick, Rhode Island, under the name of Frank Baffoni, M.D, P.C., INC.
I love the profession and the privilege of being able to help make sick people well! 😊

Frank

hi Frank,

YOU are very, very Special! ... a brilliant light among the brightest of all! ...

That's so brave of you to carry on, especially with the pandemic going ... at the front lines? .... Bravo to YOU! ...

Sending to you blessings for light, safety & protection in perfect health, wealth and everything good ... 🙏 ...

Thanks so much for adding a great light in this world in helping others!

Thanks, Keisha & God bless you!

I really appreciate that. I’m not that brave. I’m just doing what I was trained to do. Besides all the extra precautions it doesn’t really seem that different. They’re all the same people I’ve known and treated for years.

Most people just think of me as a rock and roll guitar player with a medical degree. 😊🎸

Frank

... lol ... that's great! ... a rockin' Doc! ... hahaha ... that's the best i've heard today! ...

... love music .... and hey, do you enjoy the Beatles? ... there's a special for Lennon's 80th birthday if he was still here with us today... i can pm it to ya ... it's on for only the rest of this month, i think ...

Yes, please do, Keisha.
That would be great!
The Beatles were fabulous.
I love and play all kinds of music 😊
Frank

...yes, for the eight months they played together ... they sang it all to the world in their lyrics! ... 🎵 ...

England has produced so many killer bands and musicians in my lifetime that it’s ridiculous! 👍

... there must be a synergy of sorts! ...

the impact of the music by the Beatles is still felt today, very much so! ...

ok pls ck your mailbox ...

Thanks, much appreciated!

... enjoy! ... ⭐️😉🎵🎉... 🎵🎤🎹🎸🎺🎷... !

cheerio ... ⭐️😉🎉 ...

*** wow! ***

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the gig economy, most fascinating.

hey hi Joseph!

Good to see you here & appreciate your reply ..

uhm -- 'most fascinating' .... would u like to say what you found most fascinating? ... be good to know ...

all the best, cheerio ... ⭐️😉🎉 ....

*** sure share your thoughts here, too! .... :) ***

One of the things I found fascinating was: "All those we studied acknowledged that they felt a host of personal, social, and economic anxieties without the cover and support of a traditional employer."

well, with a 'traditional full-time' position say in an office tower or other workplace somewhere, employers are subject to work standards & conditions for the health & safety and monetary compensation ... for instance, the typical 9-5 with a regular paycheck.....

whereas, when one works as a freelance or in gigs or contract work .... there is great variability... lots of ups & downs and 'uncertainty' unless one is truly successful in scaling a biz ...

does that make sense to you?

It is the difference between a full time employee or an independent contractor. So yes, it makes sense to me.

... and which one do you think is YOU or the work style that you'd prefer to be doing or involved with? ... just curious ... :)

I have usually been one who works as a freelance or in gigs or contract work where there is great variability.

.. well, you're in luck then ... it's a growing one and you're in the right place here in building an online biz ...

have you seen Tim's latest video -- it's a chat on his progress in building an online income here at WA .... very nicely done ...

I have not seen Tim's latest video, but I shall check it out, thank you.
