Both, I work for HP & Microsoft for total 10 years, another 10 with an Asian Multinational and In between 6 years running a dotcom start-up at the tail end of the dotcom era so I know what it means to go from start-up to millions and down to nothing!
Today I run my own training and consultancy business and building an online business at the same time.

we learned about business cycles (last century) -- do you think the up-down swings still apply today? ...
the start-up to millions and then to zero .... that's a huge swing! ...
gotta catch and keep some of it! .... once the gains are made, learned to pull back the original investment and then diversify the rest ....

Yes, Keisha. Business cycles is still happening and will continue to happen.
However, there are more factors at play and Government involvement in business globally is creating new challenges.
In fact, I just received an e-mail from McKinsey launching a new service called “The New Normal.”
If you recall I wrote a blog mentioning, The New Normal. I also did a talk on it. Now, McKinsey has a monthly newsletter covering the New Normal in different businesses and industry.
These are all factors that will influence the market and business.
