What would you do in my shoes?

Hi WA Peeps,

I'm really keen to get your thoughts and feedback on this one as it's probably a common problem that others here at WA encounter.

We join Wealthy Affiliate - we start the training and then we get over excited about about the opportunities of this affiliate marketing business. There's SO MANY different angles we could take, ways to grow our business, niche ideas and it's all a little overwhelming.

Within weeks you've spun up 3 or more websites, thinking that it will be easy to manage the workload that goes with them.

Or, we start one website, then it's slow going, so we jump to the next new and shiny idea that is going to provide us with instant gratification and a way to crack this whole puzzle of making money online and giving us the financial freedom that we want. But we want it now!

Everything looks and tastes so good... but, I'm sure you've heard the saying:

BTW - That Chimp is me. (or is that chump?)

You see... by the time the penny drops (by doing the training here), that a 'mini niche' site is not going to cut the mustard, and that you need to focus on building a massive authority site, you'll have so many balls in the air... and you'll find it super hard to pick which one is your winner.

Just take a moment to read some of the success stories here and you'll quickly see that it's not 20 posts on a site that make money, not 50, not even 100... If you have your eye on the big prize - you need to keep writing content beyond 100 posts, and that's where you start to see your payday coming through and the realisation of your financial aspirations.

Some WA members have done the maths on this and have worked out that each post is worth x dollars, then extrapolated that out to determine just how many posts they need on their authority website to make a decent living.

So... perhaps you're like me and the penny has dropped. You now realise you need to truly buckle under and focus on ONE website, keep writing content and create that authority website that Google is going to love and that oozes authority and presence within your intended niche.

But now you've got half a dozen websites up with half formed ideas, and which one is your winner?

How do you choose?

Oh and then you add the SWAG challenge in on top of that - and that really drives home the point of just how much writing is involved in building a successful site.

And herein lies my problem.

My SWAG site is steadily growing in traffic and I'm pretty happy with the progress and referrals I'm getting - but one of my niche sites is offering up some exciting opportunities:

  • even more traffic
  • real life sponsorship and free product for me to use to build my email list through competitions
  • easier email list building than my MMO site (because I have that real life connection/relationships and trust with my audience)
  • oh and randomly, much more WA signups than my MMO site

Q1. Is it possible to utilise a completely unrelated niche to promote Wealthy Affiliate products?

Personally, I think this is a yes. However, feedback suggests that I will have limited success heading down this path, and I should focus on my WA MMO site. - What do you think?

Q2. It's only month 3 of the Super Affiliate Challenge... I've made a commitment to myself and Kyle that I'm in for the full twelve months (and I will stick to this)... If you were me, would you stick with your MMO site, or use your unrelated niche site for this project?

I'm really struggling with this one and I'm very keen to hear from anyone who has an opinion either way on this.

Q3. Can I do both?

Is this even possible? To be successful with our websites, we need to write at least 3-4 articles per week and 12000+ words per month (along with all the research, pre and post post work that goes with it). To do a half decent job of either site, I don't believe it's possible to do both.

What do you think?

Drop me a comment below and let me know what you think...

Cheers, Karen

You do have a challenging dilemma Karen, but one that we all wished we had. I do have two websites going and find that when I focus on one, the other suffer. Based on the training we are receiving through SWAG, is you MMO site in sync? If not I would suggest using it for SWAG, avoiding having to maintain two. If it is, then the only other suggestion would be to delegate the content writing of one. Not sure what that costs but I have read other members using that type of resource.

Yes that is actually a very good option for the second site. I could easily outsource some of the writing and have had good success with this through Fiverr in the past. I am not going to drop the ball on my MMO (SWAG) site as I've made the commitment to do it. So it's either keep them both going or drop the niche... aghhh!
Cheers, Karen

Sounds like your business is maturing. Good on you. Pick which one you think you can get the most $ out of in the next 6 months, then swing back to the 2nd website and accelerate is along.
Many members here at wa have a lovely sign off in their niche website saying "if you want to lean how to make this website, please click here". The total spiel.could be 200 words with large CTA's. It is a really great way to do it. Good luck either way.

Can you point me to a few of these member sites? I just like to see how other members are using their niche sites to help promote WA. Thanks a lot.

This is fantastic and I bet I could make a great little 'sign off' in CANVA for just that purpose - Thanks so much for sharing this tip.
Cheers, Karen

Hi Dynamic David, Sometimes if you scroll down the page of a member profile, they will display their websites below their blogs. Definitely worth looking at other member sites (and leave comments on posts too, while you're there). I get a lot of inspiration from my fellow WA peeps here. Cheers, Karen

I will send you a PM

Hi Karen,

I have done that a few times. Leaving comments on their websites, I have not. That is a great idea.

Quite often, WA members have not yet specified their websites there. There is some great training here, and there is great interaction with WA members in these discussion areas.

Peace,
David

Thanks for the PM. I have replied back to your PM.

Thanks again for taking the time to share those links with me.

Hi, just adding to this convo... here's a link to one of my posts which references WA after reviewing another product... it might be useful for you David? https://writingforcash.com/making-youtube-how-to-videos-for-beginners-with-lumen5
All the best, Cheers, Karen

Hi Karen, thanks.

My niche site is about managing stress. So my "managing stress" audience would not expect to see a making money article / working from home / WA type of thing. On that website, if I mention a WA type of thing, that is going to turn my "managing stress" audience off my website.

Anyway, what I was looking for was a niche site, something totally unrelated to making money at home or building a website or WA, in for example say "DIY products" or say "football" or say "basketball". Each of these niches really has nothing to do with making money at home or building a website or WA. Yes, some people in "DIY products" may be interested in making money at home or building a website or WA.

However if someone writes posts / have ads on a "DIY products" website that are related to making money at home or building a website or WA, you run the risk of making your "DIY products" audience being turned off and going elsewhere. I think that risk is major.

It is Jay, the Chief WA trainer who has this website, https://www.affiliateresources.org/wealthy-affiliate-review/

Jay also has this website selling a consumer product: https://footballsnackhelmets.com/

As far as I can tell, if you were on his football snack helmets website, there is nothing there promoting the idea of making money at home or building a website or WA. There is a link to his SEO consulting business, using a "powered by" idea. Very similar to the "website designed and developed by" idea you see at a number of websites. Nothing there, as far as I can see to making money at home or building a website or WA.

Hope that makes sense,
Peace,
David

Yip, got it. thanks I get where you are coming from now. For my niche (horses) site, I have a small side banner which promotes the idea of starting a blog (to capture your personal journey/adventure/challenge with your horses)... and this is relatively successful - however, the sign ups I've had through that have yet to go premium - they are just interested in the free blog I think.
Best of luck, cheers, Karen

I just dropped by one of your websites and left you a comment there. I asked a question in that comment that I already know the answer to, but other people visiting that webpage may not.

Peace,
David

Thank you very much David if you have a site that you'd like me to return the favor, please pm me or reply here with the link. Best wishes, Karen

I just sent you the link by PM. Thanks. Much appreciated.

Fantabulous :) I'll do the comment shortly. Cheers, Karen

I'd go with the one you enjoy the most. Consider the following advice:

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work."

"The only way to do great work is to love what you do."

"You’ve got to find what you love, and that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers."

"The ones that were successful loved what they did so they could persevere when it got really tough. The ones who didn’t love it quit – because they were sane!

"You’ve got to love it. You’ve got to have passion."

~ Steve Jobs

Great quote. Thanks for sharing

Hi Henri-III thanks so much for those lovely quotes - you are completely right with that - the problem is - I love it all hahaha and I don't want to drop any of those balls.
At this stage, it's back to the drawing board and rethinking my approach!
Cheers, Karen

I totally agree!

That really is a hard decision and I find myself there as well. I want to promote WA; however I am really enjoying my niche site so I am working hard on my niche site and struggling with the WA. I really want to do both. Sorry I am not much help, just find myself relating to your issue.

I knew I wouldn't be alone on this one! Part of me wants to just focus on my niche site, because I can see it's got legs... but the other part of me wonders if the WA bootcamp site is going to be a better bet in the long run. Decisions decisions and it's not easy! Thanks for your feedback, Cheers, karen

I have two sites (actually three now, as I just landed a new client) and it’s a very hard struggle keeping up blog posts for multiple sites. I think burnout is the real problem. Can someone write a blog post everyday, sure, but burnout is going to happen sooner than later doing that. I would say focus on one site (if possible) and make it totally amazing but I also realize it’s hard to let the others sites go as well.

Yes, I think you are right... and this is the decision I'm really wrestling with. Thanks for your input into this discussion. Cheers, Karen

I think the usual advice is decide on one of them, and put your time and effort into that one, then when it is successful (you decide some goal for that, maybe x number of dollars per month), then start working on your next site.

The route to success for that one should be a lot faster, because you know what to do, because you did it for the first site.

Remember though to keep writing content for the first site, as you are working on the second site.

You need to determine your work schedule.

Have a look at a schedule that Bo Tipton suggests: He explains his reasoning in the video.

If I was you, I would schedule some time every week or month to do a review. Because if you are working on site A (say 90%) and site B (say 10%), and suddenly site B starts to produce great results for 10% of your time, then it may make sense to put more time into site B. So you need to be flexible. You might decide to spend say 40% on site A, and 60% on site B. However you decide.

Training / Video training / Website maintenance / house keeping / plugins and all of that also needs to be done as well.
So I think that Bo's schedule, needs another hour to cover those tasks, so instead of a 4 hour schedule, there is a 5 hour schedule.

Opps, time for me to do another schedule review........

Thanks so much for such an informative and constructive reply - I'm heading across to watch the video now. Really appreciate it - Cheers, Karen

I also have more than one website right now, but one of them is easy to write posts for while the other is more of a challenge. I'm keeping both going because with the easy one I can knock out articles fairly quickly and still have time to work on the more challenging one.

Thanks for the feedback... I agree with that. One is much easier to write for than the other one!

Hi Karen, I feel your pain! I had a different site going when I joined than I do now promoting WA. I am also in the SWAG and running another business.
The only question I have a firm opinion on is doing more than one. My thought would be no. We are still learning things as we go with Kyle and from others. I think we need to learn to do one site correctly before we branch out. That being said, which one to choose I can only suggest would be the one you are most passionate about and enjoy writing for.
I believe you could utilize a different niche to promote WA but depending on what it is. I think you still need to be able to tie the two together somehow.
I would also suggest you go with one as you are getting referrals. I don't even seem to be able to get the traffic never mind the referrals and yet everyone says I'm doing great!? If you getting them and you focus on that one, it should take off.

Hope this helps!
Christine

Thanks Christine that definitely does help - appreciate your feedback, cheers, Karen

Yes, you can promote Wealthy Affiliate on a niche site.

Can you do both sure you can but both will suffer from not concentrating on one? You work one until you have it making money then it is easy to move what you learned on to the next one.

You work two at the same time to get them working money it doesn't work as good. You are spending half the time on each site.

That's exactly right. But now it's like I could seriously toss a coin and either site would be the right answer! If only it was as simple as clothes shopping. I would just buy both dresses!!
Thanks for your advice and I guess it's crunch time.
Cheers, Karen

Feels like a situation of success whatever path you will choose. Your niche site sounds very promising . What if you keep it alive during these 12 months that you are committed to SWAG training and site?Just post whatever amount you can while giving most emphasis to an affiliate site?
I think I would do this.:)

Hi Vera, that's a very good suggestion and definitely one I will be putting into the mix. The funny thing about it is that I'd decided to 'park' that website late last year, but it keeps on giving! Decision time is afoot. Cheers, Karen

It should survive. Just continue breathing in some life in it, however much you can.:)
Cheers, Vera
