How do I get rid of the little grey 'boxes' ?

Hi there,
I'm sure there must be an easy fix for this. When I paste the code for a google ad on my website, it leaves these annoying little grey 'boxes'. Is there any way I can get rid of them, it detracts from the look of the site...

I could begin suggesting things like a "padding" issue only to have a more polished web designer come tell me I'm incorrect.
I'm not as technically inclined to answer this one but a google search wouldn't hurt for the term "gray Adsense bars" or "Google Adsense display issue" possibly.
