And I thought the inside of MY head was a mess!

So many ideas and new shiny objects...

For a while I've been pondering the direction of my website and my niche. Somedays it's been a real struggle to focus on one of the many ideas whirling around in my head. In fact, at times I have so much going on up there, I think I have a head full of scrambled eggs.

My website is a teenager!

Talking to my mentor on here has been helpful, especially in the realisation that I needed to take my website in hand, as I can see that things have moved on from my website's tentative steps in its infancy to now being a website on the verge of becoming a surly over confident teenager.

As an ex teenager myself - I know how important this time is. A lack of direction and too much freedom just leads to a big dollop of trouble.

Setting some boundaries

So, with the realisation that I now have a teenager in the house, I need to set some clear boundaries and set them fast.

  • get the house rules in place
  • negotiate a dress code
  • work out the deal breakers
  • have some agreed chores and goals

After all, there's no such thing as a free lunch these days, and if I'm the one that's going to be watering, nurturing and housing this belligerant oaf, then I want to make sure my teenager is pulling his weight.

Okay, so now I've identified my website as a male teenager with a smattering of facial hair. This post is going downhill fast, next thing I'll be giving him a name!

What happens next will just make your hair curl!

The teenagers bedroom...

Have you ever stood outside your teenagers bedroom door and hesitated before entering, slightly worried about what you might discover?

I have.

I decided that before we could put the new ground rules in place, I needed to take stock and assess the situation, so I knew exactly what I was dealing with.

I opened the door and peered through.

What I saw made me want to slam it closed again, but I took a big breath and ventured inside.

What I found was one HUGE mess!

What the hell is that - I hear you asking.

This is a quick mindmap of my unruly teenage website. There's cr4p everywhere and none of it seems sensible to me. My teenage website, Ryan (yes, he's named now), looks at me expectantly. After all, he's a teenager, and HE KNOWS this mess is pure genius. (LOLs)

I smile sweetly at him and say.

"Ryan, I can't quite see where you're going with this, but I'm convinced it has potential."

A website stocktake is a lot like tidying a teenagers bedroom

Firstly. Your teenager won't want to play your game. They don't notice the mess, and they're happy with everything just how it is.

Secondly. Once you've managed to look under the bed, sort out the clothes and made piles of likeminded things, you'll realise that you have more stuff that doesn't match, doesn't fit anymore, isn't cool, smells bad, or is just ... sooooo last year.

Be prepared to throw some stuff out. It's hard to be ruthless, but you'll never see the light at the end of the tunnel if you don't.

When you've completed the crucial stocktake step, you'll be able to see what you're working with.

From there, it's a case of sitting down quietly and mapping out the direction you see things heading. You'll quickly see where new content is needed, and where existing posts and pages still do the job nicely.

In a perfect world...

In a perfect world, we never would have had children without a parenting manual imprinted into our subconscious. We would make perfectly timed and judged decisions and we would produce wonderful young ambassadors of our future communities.

But we are not perfect parents from the get go, nor are we perfect website developers. And that's okay. Some of the biggest successes and lightbulb moments come from the mistakes people make along the way. Some people (myself included) learn best by.... trying stuff and ocassionally breaking stuff. Then figuring out if it's even possible to put it back together.

And the morals of this story are:

ONE. When Ryan the website was born, I could never have guessed what he wanted to be when he grew up. I hoped for one career path, but he had other ideas. It was only when he hit his teenage years that his career aspirations became clear.

Moral One: You may actually need to write a lot of content and let your website mature a bit before your final niche becomes clear.

TWO. After clearing away the clutter, I realised that I didn't need to buy a whole load of new stuff, there is potential to work with what I've got.

Moral Two: A website stocktake will identify gaps in your existing content and provide you with clarity about the end product you are striving for.

THREE. Unlike having children, affiliate marketing does come with instructions. Wealthy Affiliate contains a huge amount of information and training on this site. However, I do NOT have the good fortune of a photographic memory and have not yet committed every single pearl of wisdom into my somewhat frazzled brain.

Moral Three: ... AND THAT'S OKAY! Sometimes our most creative moments are born from our bloopers and blunders.

Enjoy your online adventures and thanks for reading...

Best wishes, Karen

ps. I used MindMup for my website exercise, it was a good way to quickly get all the clutter out of my head and down on paper.

Wow well done! A lot of thought and work. Great very informative.

Thank you so much.

But the scary thing about this, some days I can't think of anything to write then other days, this stuff just spews out of me ...

No wonder my husband looks extremely long suffering!

Thanks for reading,
Cheers, Karen

Aah, Karen... Ryan is testament to what a great parent you are. He's doing you proud. Awesome post!

hahahaha...

Thank you!

BTW, you know that Ryan is my website, not a real life teenager... right? (Like I said, my head is a scary place LOL).

Thanks for reading, cheers, Karen

This is a great analogy. I been having my moments of doubt and it's writing like this that gets me going again. Thanks, Karen.

Wow, thank you Steven. I really do mean that!!
I wanted this to inspire people (myself included) to keep going and that it's okay to make the odd wrong turn.
Cheers, Karen

we all need inspiration. did any of realize what we were getting into with this work? I think not.
Steve

Nope. I thought I'd just spin up a 10 page mini niche site and be away laughing. Now my new goal is to reach 100 posts/pages and then aim for 500. Who knew!

exactly

So true: What is not reviewed, does not improve.

Thanks for the nuggets, Karen.
Mojalefa.

Well said Mojalefa!!

You said in seven words, what took me a whole post to convey!! Well done.

Best wishes, Karen

Teenagers do grow up and most become really good examples reflecting on your input - just as your website will in the future.

Sometimes the only way to sort through a mess is to do a mind dump, or just throw the puzzle into the air and put it back together again!

Clever story, great mind dump and now you are right to go.

Steve

Absolutely! I've actually printed out the first mind dump and scribbled all over it, so it looks even worse than when I first posted it.

BUT... now I can see the way forward and see the duplication, what needs to go and where I'm way off my niche.

It was a good exercise - I somehow feel lighter haha.

Thanks for reading and your lovely feedback,

Cheers, Karen

Hi Karen, lovely post. I don’t have children but the analogy is brilliant. Thank you!
-Gary

Hi Gary,

Glad you saw the humor in it... LOL
It was a lot of fun writing - clearly I have some PTSD from raising a teenager!

BTW, you know that Ryan is my website, not a real life teenager... right? (Like I said, my head is a scary place LOL).

All the best, Karen

Hi Karen,

Lol

This post is genius. I just love the analogy. There is so much we can all learn from this.
With Grace and Gratitude
Karen

Hi Karen :)
Thanks so much for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun writing it.
Back to work! I hear you say...
All the best, Karen

Good Morning Karen,

Really nice post. I wonder what I will see when I open the door.
The only teenager I have known has been myself and if I may say so not a too bad one.
My life has been filled with many fur friends and some big boys so my experience in this field is on 0.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Haha Hi Taetske!! Long time no chat... :)

These days we've moved from teenagers to fur babies and I swear they are as wayward as each other.

BTW, you know that Ryan is my website, not a real life teenager... right? (Like I said, my head is a scary place LOL).

Best wishes, Karen

Good Morning Karen,

Yes, I was aware that you called your website Ryan.
I have not given it a name yet but you never know what I might do in the future.
I have been keeping a low profile since Jan. thinking I will have more time for writing, updating, lessons. That you can forget as now Pinterest is absorbing my time.
We make homemade pins and the people like it. I am sending you a photo of Jasmin and Cindy, I wish humans could be so peaceful
Your fur babies look like little darlings never doing any mischief, oh no, not us!

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

oh that's so cool !! Today I made a short video of my furbabies... https://youtu.be/jZyBMnMRQE0

Karen, I looked at both your videos and they are extremely nice and well made.
Very well done!

All the best. Taetske

Thank you!! I made them with Lumen5 with their free version. It doesn't have an affiliate program so I think I'm okay to mention the name. Cheers, Karen

I also enjoyed your post. I took in a number of kids (teenage) as my kids were growing up. My house was known as the "half way" house by our neighbors. I would go to bed at night and never know who would be living in my house in the morning. But it was a fun time. Wouldn't give it up for anything.

Tried and true

Elaine

Thank you Elaine, I'm glad you enjoyed this post, it was fun to write! Good on you for being the halfway house. Actually that reminds me a bit of my Mum... she was always so welcoming to all the friends I'd drag home at godawful hours. I think she was just happy that if I was home I was pretty much safe! Cheers, Karen

I enjoyed reading your post Karen. I found myself smiling often. As an aside - I used to teach teenagers. :)

I guess just as teenagers are not born with a default manual and require time and process to mature, so it is with our websites.

~Mark

Hi Mark, LOL... this post just shows how scary my mind is. I never intended to head down the teenager analogy, but once I got started it took on a life form of it's own. Sounds a bit like my blasted website. Today has been a day of back to the drawing board and just taking stock. Kind of frustrating cause I feel like I need to be busy writing, but I know this will be worth in down the line.
How on earth did you teach teenagers? You must be a saint!
Cheers, Karen

I feel your frustration Karen. Like you say in the end it will be worth it.

I sometimes wish I could just pay someone to take care of the website stuff I don't want to do. In fact I aim to do that one day. :)

I always tell myself if I was able to teach teenagers then I must be able to do just about anything else. :)

Cheers, Mark.

amen to that!
