Progress by Learning AND Doing
As we all know, there is so much to learn here at WA, once you decide which path you are going to take (and that is a study in itself). I am only now coming to grips with the realization that if I am going to proceed and succeed, I am going to have to "do" as I learn, and not vice versa (mostly trying to learn), as I have been struggling to do. There is only so much you can absorb and retain without actually putting things learnt into practise.
I was trying to take it all in, or as much as possible, and stalling myself in the process, jumping all over the place and feeling increasingly bamboozled, even backing off to the point that I nearly didn't renew my membership this November, and only then, at the eleventh hour, did I realize the problem was with me, and not WA and all it had to offer.
I wasn't sharing what I had learnt.
Wasn't Blogging any more (not even a little Blog)
I was looking in less and less, because the more I looked at what was on offer, the more I didn't know which way to jump. Clearly, a plan was needed. And it's all laid out already. All I needed to do was to stick to the lessons, follow through methodically, check out the relevant CLASSROOM or TRAINING if I needed further clarification, or to ASK FOR HELP. It IS all there, clearly laid out and accessible. The tasks at the end of each lesson are INVALUABLE as they do require you to put into practise what you have learnt. And there you could get stuck, But THAT'S when you ask for help or check out the trainings and classrooms, videos etc. You DO, and then you proceed.
DON'T let yourself get sidetracked, looking at this or that. Get on to the next lesson, rinse and repeat. Your knowledge will increase vastly, as will your confidence, and your website will blossom. When on your website, you will realize you want to add some features to break up your text or make it more interesting; it is OK then to look for that information and don't give up till you have achieved what you want to do. One little thing at a time. Then BACK to the lessons, wherever you are at. You will feel a sense of excitement at what you have accomplished, however, small, and THAT is what will keep you going. One little bit (or a lot) of excitement at a time.
Community interaction is good to do, but it also has to be worked into a routine, first things (lessons and putting things into practise) first, and then you can reward yourself with scheduled Community time.
Sorry for the long post; I wasn't going to publish this post just yet, because obviously I have a lot of catching up to do (no fun pictures, no graphics to break up the text), particularly with my website development, but if it helps just one newbie stay on track and not give up, then it will be worth it.
Let's make 2016 the year to see just what we can accomplish, by learning AND doing.
