Do not worry much about ads, you will get to the training part in which you will go over all the Affiliate programs and much more info, you should be worried about content because that is what is going to drive traffic to your site.
The sites you reviewed were probably done by people who had prior experience and maybe using premium (bought elsewhere) themes. Don't worry about it too much just follow the training. There are tons of tutorials in YouTube if you want to learn about customizing your site more.
