What NOT to do when using the new commenting system

DON'T critique the site, things like saying you don't like the colours, font, layout etc. A comment should only be relevant to the post and there have been plenty of blogs about how to leave good comments so I won't repeat that.

Yes, you can disagree with what's been said in the post and start a discussion. For example, you read a review where the writer is saying something is a scam. You disagree and tell them why. This opens up a dialogue which is good, the discussion adds more meat to the article.

If you feel the need to offer some critique about the site itself, please pm the person, or do it on their profile page. Website comments are NOT for site critiques.

Here are 2 places you can get website feedback.

Oh, and remember to respond to the comment!

Ok, rant over, am back off to do some commenting................

Way to go Kathy! :-)

Thanks!

Is this still a big problem? I haven't really used the give and take thread in months, because it had gotten so bad...and the last few times I even edited a comment or 2 to improve it. But I'm actually considering changing hosting, just so I can take advantage of the new comments system. After reading this I'm wondering if I'm just going to get a lot more junk comments.

It's not a huge problem Chris and I've had plenty of good comments. Some members are asking why their comments have not been approved so this is more a clarification for them.
The system is working really well overall for me, so def worth hosting here I'd say!

Great to know! My site is in real need of comments, so I can't make the move.

It's not just the commenting system, the support here is fantastic. I saw someone in chat in a panic because they'd accidently deleted their site. Kyle was in there at the time and within 20mns their site was back up.

I agree with you Kathy. It is very important that we give authors site an extra value and to give to authors posibillity to play the role of an expert.

Sometimes I ask questions on which I know answers, just because the author hasn't mention it.
The goal is to help the author, not to discredit him.

Regards,
Dean

Thanks Dean, you put it in a nutshell! :)

Great point Dean

Thank you for posting this. I feel that "comments vs site feedback" should maybe be added to the training, in a more obvious way. I know that it is covered, but for some reason, people are either not understanding or they are skipping over it.

The thing with notifications is you only get them from people in your network so the coverage doesn't reach everyone. Some people have already blogged about the correct way to leave comments, but I'm still getting them so thought another blog would give a wider reach. :)

Excellent! I've been having to deny approval to comments and when it asks for why, it's usually along the lines of the "comment" being feedback instead!

Love that you've put that into a blog here to remind all about the difference between feedback and comments!

Adrian

Yes, I've had the same!

Thanks for reminding us! Cheers!

Good onya Kathy. I was going to write one about this myself because of the confusion I could see some of the members in. Disapproving a comment is not a good thing to have to do, especially when the comment is actually good concerning your website... just in the wrong place.

I've also had members write (within WA), really great comments about the content (when they were supposed to be writing about my site in general) which I would love to have over on my site!

Oh well, I guess it's early days and as long as members think before they write we should soon all be steaming full steam ahead!

Yes, it's early days but I've also seen it in the old give and take comment thread. With the new system the person giving the comment now knows the comment has been disapproved but is sometimes left wondering why. Hopefully this will clarify. :)

Totally agree!! I have had this loads! I've either removed the part where they critique or disapprove the comment. I even had a comment (on my website) telling me how to get more comments and could I comment on his site since he had left a comment on his. Needless to say, I disapproved and did not comment on his site!!! It's just rude - and will turn Google off from ranking you! Google wants to see relevant discussion!! Thanks for this post! Sarah

Yes, Kyle does explain how to use the commenting system and the positive effect it can have on your ranking. It seems that many don't understand this yet!

Hi Kathy, has to be said and when they want to critique sites, go to the Happy commenting day :))

Yes, thanks Loes, will just go add that link.

Thanks, Kathy, for reminding us that we are commenting THE POST and not the site overall.

And do follow on the replies to your comments, folks :)

Oh, good reminder, I'll add that in Ervin, thanks!
